Their unique combination of high strength-to-weight ratio, strong resistance to creep, excellent corrosion resistance, and low heat conductivity makes them suitable for a wide range of applications. A large variety of microstructures, including lamellar, martensite, equiaxed globular and bimodal (duplex) microstructures can be obtained in titanium alloys depending on the thermomechanical processing routes. Despite a large amount of work in the field of investigation of microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of titanium alloys, detailed studies of the effect of their microstructure on the mechanical behavior are still necessary because of ever-increasing demands for structural materials to optimize their properties for different applications by varying processing parameters and resulting microstructures. This Special Issue is focused on various aspects of microstructure evolution in titanium alloy samples obtained using traditional and additive technologies and subjected to different processing techniques as well as on the relation between their microstructure and mechanical behavior. The presented original articles cover the areas of preparation and experimental characterization of titanium alloys as well as computer simulation of their mechanical behavior under different loading conditions.

Timetal 550 showed two types of phase transformations (martensitic and nucleation and growth) depending on the cooling rate from the [beta] region. The [alpha] phase initially precipitated at the prior [beta] grain boundaries, and it had a Burgers OR with one of the adjacent grains. It was found that colonies could grow, even in the fast-cooled Timetal 550 sample, from the grain boundary [alpha] into the prior [beta] grain with which it exhibited the Burgers OR. Three orientation relationships were also found between [alpha] laths in the basketweave microstructure. Microhardness testing demonstrated that fast-cooled Timetal 550 samples with basketweave microstructure were harder than slowly-cooled samples with colony microstructure. Orientation-dependent deformation was found in the colony microstructure. Specically, when the surface normal is perpendicular to the [0001] of [alpha], the material deforms easily in the direction perpendicular to the [0001] of [alpha]. Fuzzy logic and Bayesian neural network models were developed to predict the room temperature tensile properties of Timetal 550. This involved the development of a database relating microstructural features to mechanical properties. A Gleeble 3800 thermal-mechanical simulator was used to develop various microstructures. Microstructural features of tensile-tested samples were quantified using stereological procedures. The quantified microstructural features and the tensile properties were used as inputs and outputs, respectively, for modeling the relationships between them. The individual influence of five microstructural features on tensile properties was determined using the established models. The microstructural features having the greatest impact on UTS and YS were the thickness of [alpha] laths and the width of grain boundary [alpha] layer, and the microstructural features having the greatest impact on elongation were the thickness of [alpha] laths and the prior [beta] grain size. Nanoindentation testing found that the hardness of the individual grains was related to their orientations. The hardness values were highest near the [0001] stress axis, and they decreased as the stress axis deviated from [0001] orientation. Dislocation analyses indicated that the deformation in individual grains conformed to the Schmid factor analysis where slip primarily occurs on those slip systems where RSS (SF) values are highest.

The influence of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was examined in the Ti-5111 alloy in both wrought and cast products. The effects of time and temperature on the microstructural evolution in this near-alpha alloy are assessed, and the relationships between microstructure and the corresponding tensile properties as well as impact and fracture toughness behavior are examined.

Book excerpt: Thermomechanical treatments of Beta-III (11.5 Mo-6 Zr-4.5 Sn-Ti) and 18 Mo-Ti were performed in order to study microstructure-mechanical property relationships. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to delineate the effects that prior cold work and multiple aging steps produce in microstructure. The optimum combination of strength (230 ksi) and good ductility/toughness is obtained by cold work of the Beta-phase followed by preaging in the omega + Beta region and final aging in the alpha + Beta region to produce an extremely fine distribution of alpha-particles in the Beta-matrix. Results of an internal friction study on a series of Beta-Ti alloys containing various amounts of Mo and V with and without plastic deformation are also presented in order to describe the fundamental nature of the Beta-omega transformation. These results indicate the transformation to be of the 'atom shuttle' or displasive type. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553), a relatively new generation beta titanium alloy has the advantage of high strength. It is a current generation alloy used in landing gear. Currently, landing gear components are large scale and processed through forging, followed by complex heat treatments. HIPping (hot isostatic pressing) is an alternative way to process this alloy. In this project, work was carried out on investigating microstructures and mechanical properties of HIPped Ti-5553 alloy. During comparisons on fracture toughness of different types of specimens, specimens are first heat treated to a similar strength level. And fracture toughness values are calculated at the same strength level circumstance. Various microstructures are obtained through different heat treatments. Different microstructures can be achieved through specified treated temperature/ time and quenching methods. Results show that larger grain size and coarser intergranular lath-like grain boundary alpha can improve the fracture toughness. One shell-like microstructure is obtained through different heat treatment conditions. Mechanical test was carried out on this kind of microstructure and compared to normal beta annealed microstructures. To investigate the influence of microstructure on fracture toughness, techniques including optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and confocal laser scanning microscope have been used.
