Thus the subject of local area networking in the industrial environment has become assumed great importance. The object of this book is to present both hardware and software concepts that are important in the development of microprocessor-based control systems. An attempt has been made to obtain a balance between theory and practice, with emphasis on practical applications. It should be useful for both practicing engineers and students who are interested in learning the practical details of the implementation of microprocessor-based control systems. As some of the related material has been published in the earlier volumes of this series, duplication has been avoided as far as possible.

Book excerpt: Microprocessors play a dominant role in computer technology and have contributed uniquely in the development of many new concepts and design techniques for modem industrial systems. This contribution is excessively high in the area of robotic and manufacturing systems. However, it is the editor's feeling that a reference book describing this contribution in a cohesive way and covering the major hardware and software issues is lacking. The purpose of this book is exactly to fill in this gap through the collection and presentation of the experience of a number of experts and professionals working in different academic and industrial environments. The book is divided in three parts. Part 1 involves the first four chapters and deals with the utilization of microprocessors and digital signal processors ( DSPs ) for the computation of robot dynamics. The emphasis here is on parallel computation with particular problems attacked being task granularity, task allocation/scheduling and communication issues. Chapter I, by Zheng and Hemami, is concerned with the real-time multiprocessor computation of torques in robot control systems via the Newton-Euler equations. This reduces substantially the height of the evaluation tree which leads to more effective parallel processing. Chapter 2, by D'Hollander, examines thoroughly the automatic scheduling of the Newton-Euler inverse dynamic equations. The automatic program decomposition and scheduling techniques developed are embedded in a tool used to generate multiprocessor schedules from a high-level language program.

Book excerpt: This report describes work done in 1974 to 1976 on the design and construction of an industrial microprocessor system capable of testing the limits and capabilities of microprocessors in the industrial process-control world. The system had to be capable of operating in a data-logging or in a control or supervisory capacity. It was intended to provide a low-cost reliable alternative to expensive process-control and data-logging systems based on minicomputers, which are under-utilized in many applications. The system consists of a robust, electrically isolated unit designed on the 'black-box' principle with the minimum of operator controls. It is housed in a sealed crate with internal access by way of rows of input and output plugs and connecters. The system is modular so that it can easily be expanded. It can be operated as a small dedicated controller or expanded to its full capacity by the addition of memory or industrial input-output modules. The system is based on the Intel 8080 microprocessor. The industrial interface consists of electrically isolated analogue- and digital-input and -output modules, which can be selected under programme control. There are also up to 64 asynchronous priority-encoded alarm channels that can interrupt the control sequence at any time should an alarm condition arise. A plug-in-front-panel unit is provided for the debugging of hardware and software.
