Book Micromechanics of Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Micromechanics of Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites written by William W. Gerberich and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of the interfaces in an Al2O3 fiber reinforced beta-2lS titanium have been evaluated by using fiber pushout tests. The Al2O3 fibers were coated with a refractory metal and Y2O3 which served as a diffusion barrier during the HIPing used to produce the metal matrix composites. By doing fiber pushout tests the interfacial fracture was found to occur at the interface between the refractory metal and the H2O3. The interfacial shear strength and interfacial frictional stress were measured to be 323 and 312 + or - 2 MPa, respectively. The interfacial frictional stress, which is due to asperity interlocking during the fiber sliding, was correlated to the surface roughness of the coated Al2O3 fiber obtained with the aid of an atomic force microscope. The measured surface roughness of 18.8 + or - 2.2 nm was related to the frictional stress through Hutchinson's model. The frictional coefficient between the Al2O3 fiber and the Ti matrix calculated to be 0.32 + or - 0.02.

Book Micromechanics and Nanosimulation of Metals and Composites

Download or read book Micromechanics and Nanosimulation of Metals and Composites written by Siegfried Schmauder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of metallic materials determines the usability and reliability of all the machines, tools and equipment around us. Yet, the question about which mechanisms control the strength and damage resistance of materials and how they can be optimised remains largely unanswered. How do real, heterogeneous ma- rials deform and fail? Why can a small modification of the microstructure increase the strength and damage resistance of materials manifold? How can the strength of heterogeneous materials be predicted? The purpose of this book is to present different experimental and computational analysis methods of micromechanics of damage and strength of materials and to demonstrate their applications to various micromechanical problems. This book summarizes at a glance some of the publications of the Computational Mechanics Group at the IMWF/MPA Stuttgart, dealing with atomistic, micro- and meso- chanical modelling and experimental analysis of strength and damage of metallic materials. In chapter 1, the micromechanisms of damage and fracture in different groups of materials are investigated experimentally, using direct observations and inverse analysis. The interaction of microstructural elements with the evolving damage is studied in these experiments. Chapter 2 presents different approaches to the - cromechanical simulation of composite materials: embedded unit cells, multiphase finite elements and multiparticle unit cells. Examples of the application of these models to the analysis of deformation and damage in different materials are given. Chapter 3 deals with the methods of numerical modelling of damage evolution and crack growth in heterogeneous materials.

Book Micromechanics of Composite Materials

Download or read book Micromechanics of Composite Materials written by George Dvorak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad exposition of analytical and numerical methods for modeling composite materials, laminates, polycrystals and other heterogeneous solids, with emphasis on connections between material properties and responses on several length scales, ranging from the nano and microscales to the macroscale. Many new results and methods developed by the author are incorporated into the rich fabric of the subject, which has developed from the work of many researchers over the last 50 years. Among the new results, the book offers an extensive analysis of internal and interface stresses caused by eigenstrains, such as thermal, transformation and inelastic strains in the constituents, which often exceed those caused by mechanical loads, and of inelastic behavior of metal matrix composites. Fiber prestress in laminates, and modeling of functionally graded materials are also analyzed. Furthermore, this book outlines several key subjects on modeling the properties of composites reinforced by particles of various shapes, aligned fibers, symmetric laminated plates and metal matrix composites. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

Book Computational Mesomechanics of Composites

Download or read book Computational Mesomechanics of Composites written by Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 294 pages. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.

Book The Micromechanics of Deformation and Failure in Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book The Micromechanics of Deformation and Failure in Metal Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals reinforced with ceramic fibers or particulates are promising materials for use in new generations of aerospace structures, propulsion devices and energy conversion systems. Furthermore, the controllability of many of these variables opens up the possibility of engineering materials for specific applications, if the effects of alterations in microstructure can be predicted. However, metal-matrix composites often have low ductility and low fracture toughness. An improved understanding of the basic deformation and failure mechanisms is needed to overcome these problems. To this end, research was carried out in three areas: (1) continuum modeling of deformation and fracture in metal-matrix composites, including the interaction between failure mechanisms using phenomenological constitutive relations to characterize each of the main failure modes in metal-matrix composites, reinforcement cracking, interfacial debonding and matrix void nucleation, growth and coalescence; (2) numerical studies of the propagation of fast cracks along and across interfaces, with a particular focus on understanding crack propagation from a brittle phase into a ductile phase; and (3) discrete dislocation modeling of matrix plastic deformation in metal-matrix composites with micron size reinforcements.

Book Mechanics of Composite Materials

Download or read book Mechanics of Composite Materials written by Jacob Aboudi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade the author has been engaged in developing a micromechanical composite model based on the study of interacting periodic cells. In this two-phase model, the inclusion is assumed to occupy a single cell whereas the matrix material occupies several surrounding cells. A prominent feature of the micromechanical method of cells is the transition from a medium, with a periodic microstructure to an equivalent homogeneous continuum which effectively represents the composite material. Of great importance is the significant advantage of the cells model in its capability to analyze elastic as well as nonelastic constituents (e.g. viscoelastic, elastoplastic and nonlinear elastic), thus forming a unified approach in the prediction of the overall behaviour of composite material. This book deals almost exclusively with this unified theory and its various applications.
