Book Compromised Perfusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : K. Messmer
  • Publisher : S. Karger AG (Switzerland)
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Compromised Perfusion written by K. Messmer and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 1996 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compromised perfusion indicates the inability of the cardiovascular system to sustain the normal distribution of blood flow within the entire body and can be defined as a reduction of perfusion pressure leading to the exclusion of single capillaries or groups of capillaries. Occurring in patients subjected to shock, trauma, extensive surgery and organ transplantation, it reduces the surface area available for exchange of nutrients and metabolites with the consequence of tissue hypoxia and accumulation of waste products. To counteract compromised perfusion hypertonic/hyperoncotic saline/dextran solutions are used efficiently. This book presents an overview of the most recent findings from studies investigating compromised perfusion. The selected contributions discuss the mechanistic effects and side effects of small volume resuscitation, as well as specific effects of dextran in the field of organ conservation and post-ischemic leukocyte/endothelium interaction. Furthermore, specific aspects of the biology and pathophysiology of microvascular endothelium are considered. Providing a critical review of recent advances, this volume serves as an excellent source of information for all those interested in both clinical and experimental microcirculation research.

Book Inflammation and the Microcirculation

Download or read book Inflammation and the Microcirculation written by D. Neil Granger and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Historical Perspectives / Anatomical Considerations / Impaired Vasomotor Responses / Capillary Perfusion / Angiogenesis / Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Adhesion / Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions / Coagulation and Thrombosis / Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction / Epilogue / References

Book Organ Microcirculation

  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Organ Microcirculation written by H. Ishii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of microcirculation means not only the assembly of small vessels-those of less than 100 um in diameter, but also its functional circulatory and metabolic units. Its principal function is to permit the transfer of substances between the tissues and the circulation, making it a fundamental factor in disease processes, including the spread of cancer, delayed healing, circulatory shock, and complications of diabetes . Organ Microcirculation: A Gateway to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Interventions covers the latest developments in nano-biotechnology for microvascular interventions, gastroduodenal microcirculation and disease, liver microvascular research, cell adhesion and traffic in micmcirculation, and the sensing and bioregulation of gaseous molecules in microcirculation . It provides invaluable information for those engaged in microvascular research in the fields of pharmacology, physiology, gastroenterology, and bioengineering.

Book Endothelium and Cardiovascular Diseases

Download or read book Endothelium and Cardiovascular Diseases written by Protasio L. Da Luz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endothelium and Cardiovascular Diseases: Vascular Biology and Clinical Syndromes provides an in-depth examination of the role of endothelium and endothelial dysfunction in normal vascular function, and in a broad spectrum of clinical syndromes, from atherosclerosis, to cognitive disturbances and eclampsia. The endothelium is a major participant in the pathophysiology of diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension, and these entities are responsible for the largest part of cardiovascular mortality and morbidly. Written by known experts, and covering all aspects of endothelial function in health and disease, this reference represents an assembly of recent knowledge that is essential to both basic investigators and clinicians. Provides a complete overview of endothelial function in health and diseases, along with an assessment of new information Includes coverage of groundbreaking areas, including the artificial LDL particle, the development of a new anti-erectile dysfunction agent, a vaccine for atherosclerosis, coronary calcification associated with red wine, and the interplay of endoplasmic reticulum/oxidative stress Explores the genetic features of endothelium and the interaction between basic knowledge and clinical syndromes

Book Monitoring Tissue Perfusion in Shock

Download or read book Monitoring Tissue Perfusion in Shock written by Alexandre Augusto Pinto Lima and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes various aspects of the basic physiological processes critical to tissue perfusion and cellular oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, blood flow distribution and microcirculation. In the context of monitoring critically ill patients in the early hours of circulatory shock, it is essential to recognize changes in traditional parameters such as mean arterial pressure and cardiac output, and to assess the need for active intervention. However, even if global macrocirculatory variables are restored, abnormalities in tissue oxygenation may persist. Tissue hypoperfusion is connected to the development of organ failure and, if it goes unrecognized, may worsen the prognosis. As a result, there is a growing interest in methods for monitoring regional perfusion in peripheral tissues to predict or diagnose ongoing hypoperfusion. In this work, eminent experts from a range of disciplines convey a working knowledge of how regional monitoring in shock can complement the conventional global parameters of oxygen transport, and demonstrate that real-time bedside assessment of tissue oxygenation is readily achievable using noninvasive monitoring techniques. Accordingly, the book offers a valuable, easy-to-use guide for the entire ICU team and other clinicians.
