Book Simulation Study of Bending and Microbending Losses

Download or read book Simulation Study of Bending and Microbending Losses written by Roy Preangka and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now-a-day's optical fiber forms the basis for local, national and telecommunication network. It is broadly used in communication system instead of electrical copper cables because of its small size, very high bandwidth and low transmission loss. But it has always some chances to loss the transmitting signal. Bending is one of the permanent reasons to loss of the transmitting signal. It can increase the fiber attenuation by two mechanisms: macrobending and microbending. Macrobend occurs when a fiber is bent through a large angle and microbend can be generated at any stage during the manufacturing process or service. For these cases, entire signals do not reach the receiver. We perform a simulation study for bending losses in a single mode optical fiber. Single mode fibers are commonly used in communication system than multimode fibers because of its least attenuation and low dispersion. The study has been done using the software "Understanding Fiber Optics on a PC." We find a minimum loss of 0.0 dB for the wavelength of 1.3um, core radius of 4.0 um, refractive index difference of 0.35% and bend radius of 7 cm. This result may be an important milestone to design an optical fiber."

Book Theoretical and Numerical Studies on Macrobending Losses in Multimode Fibers

Download or read book Theoretical and Numerical Studies on Macrobending Losses in Multimode Fibers written by Chongyang Chen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation reports the background, theory, and numerical studies of bending losses in multimode optical fibers, including effects of mechanical deformation. We justify the use of a ray model by calculating the total number of modes in multimode fibers of practical interest. We theoretically extend Jacomme's model for ray tracing to bent multimode graded-index fibers, including a detailed consideration of mechanical deformation. We use numerical methods to solve the ray tracing differential equations and compute the bending losses for a variety of initial ray distributions, including models of laser and LED illumination. We compare the computed results with published data and conclude that the numerical results match well with empirical data for bending radii larger than 3 cm. Future work will focus on a modified model for smaller bending radii by taking into account torsional strain introduced during bending loss tests.

Book Fundamentals of Optical Fibers

Download or read book Fundamentals of Optical Fibers written by John A. Buck and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-04-27 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Optical Fibers, Second Edition offers readers a timely and consistent introduction to the fundamental principles of light propagation in fibers. In it, the author reviews, in depth, fundamental wave guiding concepts, the influence of various fiber structures and materials on light transmission, nonlinear light propagation effects occurring in fibers, and various measurement techniques. Since the chief application of optical fibers is in communication systems, throughout the book the focus is on topics, which pertain to that domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber Optics Vocabulary Development In 1979, the National Communications System published Technical InfonnationBulle tin TB 79-1, Vocabulary for Fiber Optics and Lightwave Communications, written by this author. Based on a draft prepared by this author, the National Communications System published Federal Standard FED-STD-1037, Glossary of Telecommunications Terms, in 1980 with no fiber optics tenns. In 1981, the first edition of this dictionary was published under the title Fiber Optics and Lightwave Communications Standard Dictionary. In 1982, the then National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, published NBS Handbook 140, Optical Waveguide Communications Glossary, which was also published by the General Services Admin istration as PB82-166257 under the same title. Also in 1982, Dynamic Systems, Inc. , Fiberoptic Sensor Technology Handbook, co-authored and edited by published the this author, with an extensive Fiberoptic Sensors Glossary. In 1989, the handbook was republished by Optical Technologies, Inc. It contained the same glossary. In 1984, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers published IEEE Standard 812-1984, Definitions of Terms Relating to Fiber Optics. In 1986, with the assistance of this author, the National Communications System published FED-STD-1037A, Glossary of Telecommunications Terms, with a few fiber optics tenns. In 1988, the Electronics Industries Association issued EIA-440A, Fiber Optic Terminology, based primarily on PB82-166257. The International Electrotechnical Commission then pub lished IEC 731, Optical Communications, Terms and Definitions. In 1989, the second edition of this dictionary was published.

Book Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers

Download or read book Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers written by A. O. Garg and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bend and microbend performance of various singlemode optical fibers with matched cladding are investigated. Microbending sensitivity is determined with both a sandpaper test and a new test that uses wire mesh. The new test is found to have certain advantages. In particular, the mesh test can be carried out on bare fibers; therefore the intrinsic sensitivity of fibers to microbending can be characterized directly, without concern about the influence of coatings. Such bare fiber results are also reported. (Author).
