Book Michigan Millitary Michigan Pride

Download or read book Michigan Millitary Michigan Pride written by Sharon B. Miller and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan Military - Michigan Pride is filled with short veteran's stories about their unique military experience. The book also includes interesting tidbits of history and show many of the wartime posters and pictures of WW II. Why do we sell Poppies on Veteran's Day? What was meant by the "Magic Carpet" brigade? What did "Hollywood Stars" think of the war? Why did a Polish woman bury glass jars at the base of a tree? Why do the "guards" at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier have "wet" gloves? Who were "Ripley's Raiders?" Why were sailing ships used during WW II? What is an "ash can?" What president of a major food company paid for a full eight course dinner for four sailors on leave? These and many other questions are answered in the book! Read about the "airman" who became a "guest" at Stalag I 7B and how he coped with the situation. Read about the eye-opening experience a medical corpsman experienced when he crossed the equator! Read about "Operation Detachment" and the terrifying experience of the taking of Iwo Jima, culminating in the famous "raising of the flag" picture on the cover of this book. Read some of the poignant VVW Il poetry penned by a lonely G.l. Read about the Vietnam Memorial wall and a veteran's visit that brought healing to him and his fellow veterans. Michigan Military - Michigan Pride is designed to honor veterans and active service people throughout America. Admiral Chester Nimitz, CINCPAC, WVV Il stated: "Among the Americans who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue." That sentiment can be ascribed to all who have fought to retain America's freedom and independence. It is important we remember that "Freedom - is not free!" It is also important to remember - "Our Military - Keeps America Freel"

Book Report of the Adjutant General of Michigan

Download or read book Report of the Adjutant General of Michigan written by Forgotten Books and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant-General of Michigan: For the Period Between September 30, 1900 and September 30, 1902 To every surviving sailor and soldier who enlisted as a citizen or resident of Michigan, or who enlisted as citizens or residents of Michigan in the regular army or navy, in the spanish-american War of 1898, or in the campaign in the Philip pine Islands, at any time from the commencement of hostilities there until January 1, 1901, and to the family of such sailor or soldier who may have perished in such war or in such service, or who may have died since his return, and to such other persons as are hereinafter designated, a bronze medal of honor. The Act provided that the State Military Board, subject to the approval of the Governor, should decide upon the design and supervise the making of said medals and the distribution of the medals was placed under the super vision of the State Military Board Who shall perform all services in connec tion therewith without additional compensation. The design of the medal was agreed upon and were purchased of V. D. Brenner, New York City. About have been distributed personally and through the mail-to those entitled to them under the Act, and applications are received daily for medals. Many applicants have not been granted medals, because though residents of Michigan at the time of enlistment, they served in regiments of other states, who under the terms of Section 1 of Act 223 are not eligible to receive them when perhaps they did distinguished service in the spanish-american War or in the Philippines. This is especially true of soldiers living near the state line, who finding no recruiting office in their own state, were so patriotic and eager to serve their country, that they crossed the state line and enlisted in regiments in adjoining states. Others have a record of honorable service in the regular army or navy during the spanish-american war and in Manila Bay who enlisted previous to 1898 and therefore under Section 1, Act 223 are not eligible for medals. This seems to be an unenviable distinction and I earnestly recommend that Act 223 be amended at the next session of the legislature so every resident of Michigan, at the date of his enlistment, who honorably served in the Spanish American War or in the Philippines previous to Jan. 1, 1901, whether in the volunteer or regular service, be entitled to and be granted a medal.
