Book Michelangelo s Design Principles Particularly in Relation to Those of Raphael

Download or read book Michelangelo s Design Principles Particularly in Relation to Those of Raphael written by Erwin Panofsky and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The discovery of the actual manuscript was featured on the front pages of the major German newspapers and reported throughout the world. It consists of 334 pages, typewritten, with extensive handwritten amendments, notes, and edits. According to Gerda Panofsky, her husbanded had continued to expand and edit the manuscript until 1922, and was preparing it for publication when he had to leave it behind. In this study, Panofsky provides a detailed analysis of Michelangelo's artistic style, comparing Michelangelo directly with Raphael, and then later taking a larger historical view. This text offers important new information about the evolution of Panofsky's scholarship, as well as on the state of research on Michelangelo and the High Renaissance during a period of transition for the discipline, in which formal readings of artworks began to take precedence over artists' biographies.

Book Dreaming of Michelangelo

Download or read book Dreaming of Michelangelo written by Asher Biemann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreaming of Michelangelo is the first book-length study to explore the intellectual and cultural affinities between modern Judaism and the life and work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. It argues that Jewish intellectuals found themselves in the image of Michelangelo as an "unrequited lover" whose work expressed loneliness and a longing for humanity's response. The modern Jewish imagination thus became consciously idolatrous. Writers brought to life—literally—Michelangelo's sculptures, seeing in them their own worldly and emotional struggles. The Moses statue in particular became an archetype of Jewish liberation politics as well as a central focus of Jewish aesthetics. And such affinities extended beyond sculpture: Jewish visitors to the Sistine Chapel reinterpreted the ceiling as a manifesto of prophetic socialism, devoid of its Christian elements. According to Biemann, the phenomenon of Jewish self-recognition in Michelangelo's work offered an alternative to the failed promises of the German enlightenment. Through this unexpected discovery, he rethinks German Jewish history and its connections to Italy, the Mediterranean, and the art of the Renaissance.

Book excerpt: One of the most significant developments in the study of works of art over the past generation has been a shift in focus from the works themselves to the viewer's experience of them and the relation of that experience both to the works in question and to other aspects of cultural life. The ten essays written for this volume address the experience of art in early modern Europe and approach it from a variety of methodological perspectives: concerns range from the relation between its perceptual and significative dimensions to the ways in which its discursive formation anticipates but does not exactly correspond to later notions of 'aesthetic' experience. The modes of engagement vary from careful empirical studies that explore the complex complementary relationship between works of art and textual evidence of different kinds to ambitious efforts to mobilize the powerful interpretative tools of psychoanalysis and phenomenology. This diversity testifies to the vitality of current interest in the experience of beholding and the urgency of the challenge it poses to contemporary art-historical practice.

Book The Life of Michael Angelo

Download or read book The Life of Michael Angelo written by Romain Rolland and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the National Museum in Florence is a marble statue which Michael Angelo called " The Victor." It represents the beautiful nude figure of a yoimg man, with curly hair over a low forehead. Standing erect, he has placed his knee on the back of a bearded prisoner, who bends and, hke an ox, stretches his head forward. But the victor looks not upon him. When about to strike he stays his hand, and turns away his sad mouth and irresolute eyes. His arm falls back towards his shoulder. He throws himself backwards. A desire for victory no longer fills his heart — it is repulsive to him. Though he has conquered, he in turn is vanquished.

Book Sebastiano del Piombo and the World of Spanish Rome

Download or read book Sebastiano del Piombo and the World of Spanish Rome written by Piers Baker-Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sebastiano del Piombo (c.1485-1547) was a close associate and rival of the central artistic figures of the High Renaissance, notably Michelangelo and Raphael. After the death of Raphael and the departure of Michelangelo from Rome, Sebastiano became the dominant artistic personality in the city. Despite being one of most significant artistic figures of the period, he remains the last artist of major importance in the western canon about whom no recent work has been published in English. In this study, Piers Baker-Bates approaches Sebastiano?s career through analysis of the patrons he attracted following his arrival at Rome. The first half of the book concentrates on Sebastiano?s network of patrons, predominantly Italian, who had strong factional ties to the Imperial camp; the second half discusses Sebastiano?s relationship with his principal Spanish patrons. Sebastiano is a leading example of a transcultural artist in the sixteenth century and his relationship with Spain was fundamental to the development of his careerThe author investigates the domination of Sebastiano?s career by patrons who had geographically different origins, but who were all were members of a wider network of Imperial loyalties. Thus Baker-Bates removes Sebastiano from the shadow of his contemporaries, bringing him to life for the reader as an artistic personality in his own right. Baker-Bates? characterization of the Rome in which Sebastiano made his career differs from previous scholarly accounts, and he describes how Sebastiano was ideally suited to flourish in the environment he depicts.Sebastiano del Piombo and the World of Spanish Rome thus re-appraises not only Sebastiano?s place in the canon of Renaissance art but, using him as a lens, also the cultural worlds of Early Modern Italy and Spain in which he operated.
