Book excerpt: Today hundreds of thousands of Americans carry pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) within their bodies. These battery-powered machines—small computers, in fact—deliver electricity to the heart to correct dangerous disorders of the heartbeat. But few doctors, patients, or scholars know the history of these devices or how "heart-rhythm management" evolved into a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing and service industry. Machines in Our Hearts tells the story of these two implantable medical devices. Kirk Jeffrey, a historian of science and technology, traces the development of knowledge about the human heartbeat and follows surgeons, cardiologists, and engineers as they invent and test a variety of electronic devices. Numerous small manufacturing firms jumped into pacemaker production but eventually fell by the wayside, leaving only three American companies in the business today. Jeffrey profiles pioneering heart surgeons, inventors from the realms of engineering and medical research, and business leaders who built heart-rhythm management into an industry with thousands of employees and annual revenues in the hundreds of millions. As Jeffrey shows, the pacemaker (first implanted in 1958) and the ICD (1980) embody a paradox of high-tech health care: these technologies are effective and reliable but add billions to the nation's medical bill because of the huge growth in the number of patients who depend on implanted devices to manage their heartbeats.

Book Recoding Gender

    Book Details:
  • Author : Janet Abbate
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2017-09-08
  • ISBN : 0262534533
  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Recoding Gender written by Janet Abbate and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold history of women and computing: how pioneering women succeeded in a field shaped by gender biases. Today, women earn a relatively low percentage of computer science degrees and hold proportionately few technical computing jobs. Meanwhile, the stereotype of the male “computer geek” seems to be everywhere in popular culture. Few people know that women were a significant presence in the early decades of computing in both the United States and Britain. Indeed, programming in postwar years was considered woman's work (perhaps in contrast to the more manly task of building the computers themselves). In Recoding Gender, Janet Abbate explores the untold history of women in computer science and programming from the Second World War to the late twentieth century. Demonstrating how gender has shaped the culture of computing, she offers a valuable historical perspective on today's concerns over women's underrepresentation in the field. Abbate describes the experiences of women who worked with the earliest electronic digital computers: Colossus, the wartime codebreaking computer at Bletchley Park outside London, and the American ENIAC, developed to calculate ballistics. She examines postwar methods for recruiting programmers, and the 1960s redefinition of programming as the more masculine “software engineering.” She describes the social and business innovations of two early software entrepreneurs, Elsie Shutt and Stephanie Shirley; and she examines the career paths of women in academic computer science. Abbate's account of the bold and creative strategies of women who loved computing work, excelled at it, and forged successful careers will provide inspiration for those working to change gendered computing culture.

Book Inside IMSA s Legendary GTP Race Cars

Download or read book Inside IMSA s Legendary GTP Race Cars written by J. A. Martin, Michael J. Fuller and published by . This book was released on with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional automobile racing has always been dominated by sanctioning bodies whose main goal was to ensure competition. That has meant seeing that cars are well matched--in body shape or chassis/engine combinations or engine size. But what about an all-out competition, in which one team's idea of the fastest race car could be pitted against another’s, regardless of mechanical “parity”? This was what the International Motor Sports Association’s (IMSA) Grand Touring Prototypes (GTP) race series was about. The Series ran from 1981 to 1993, and it was one of the most exhilarating racing experiences of all time. This book is the first to profile the amazing machines that resulted from the GTP’s flat-out competition among different--and passionate--ideas about what might be the fastest way around a track: the V-12 with its better ground-effect tunnels but higher center of gravity (CG); the flat six with its low CG but severely-restricted ground-effect tunnels; and others that employed elaborate wings and air dams. Here are the people behind this engineering free-for-all, the culmination of almost a century of automobile racing experience. And here are eighteen of the most competitive vehicles they designed. Using photography, diagrams, drawings and first-person accounts from the men who built them, Inside IMSA's Legendary GTP Race Cars offers a detailed look at the technology that drove some of the world’s most exciting race cars, the likes of which may never be seen again.

Book excerpt: Any custom automotive project begins with making choices. There are choices under the hood, such as which engine will match well with a certain chassis and transmission. There are aesthetic choices, like whether to use custom or stock wheels, what paint scheme will look best, and what type of interior will be comfortable as well as eye catching. Each decision involves an investment of money and time. Often what seems plausible in the imagination fails in execution. And only after spending hours of time and thousands of dollars does it become clear that something’s not right. Street Machines: Classic, Muscle, Modern is the ideal resource for anyone looking to build a powerful and stylish modified street machine.

Book The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World

Download or read book The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World written by Major Taylor and published by Microcosm Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1878, bicycle racer Marshall "Major" Taylor became the first Black sports star to become a global celebrity when he won the world cycling championship in 1899. Throughout his bike-racing career, he won awards and set records on and off the track. But in his native United States, he faced racist discrimination and violence at every turn, causing him to spend most of his time in Europe where fans saw his value. After he retired from racing, Taylor wrote and published his autobiography and traveled the world promoting it. Written in the 1920s, his story feels fresh, contemporary, and readable. His life was too short, but his legacy lives on in the many organizations and clubs that bear his name, and the generations of new cyclists who look up to him. His intelligence, good humor, and global perspective shine through on every page in this candid account of a remarkable life. This new edition features an introduction by bicycle advocate Adonia Lugo, author of Bicycle / Race, as well as a foreward by Ayesha McGowan, the first Black US woman to be a member of a professional road cycling team.

Book Anti Asian Racism and Public Health

Download or read book Anti Asian Racism and Public Health written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racist and xenophobic hate against Asian Americans in the midst of the COVID pandemic has been a significant threat to Asian Americans’ health – stemming from a deeply rooted Yellow Peril ideology, which racializes Asians as a threat to United States and Western culture including re-imagining Asians as a diseased public health threat. Studies have documented that Asian Americans who have experienced anti-Asian racism during the pandemic report that they are more concerned about the racism than the pandemic itself, and nearly one in five Asian Americans who experienced racism display racial trauma – the psychological and emotional harm caused by racism.
