This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Progenitors and Some South Carolina Descendants of Colonel Ann Hawkes Hay: With Collateral Genealogies, A. D. 500-1908 Seven years ago, the writer of this little volume secured the services of a capable agent, Mrs. Laura Nichols Graham (her present address, "The Cumberland," Washington, D.C.), who embarking at Boston, Massachusetts, set sail for Kingston, Island of Jamaica, duly commissioned with the task of examining all records on file relating to Michael and his only son, Colonel Ann Hawkes Hay. It was known that the former, emigrating from Scotland in the early part of the eighteenth century, had settled at Kingston; whilst the latter, with a half uncle, later the Rev. Isaac Wilkins, D. D., had been sent to New York to be educated, and had married there when eighteen years of age Martha, a daughter of the Hon. William Smith, Judge of the Supreme Court of New York and a native of England. Of twelve children surviving from this union, left orphans at a tender age by the early death of their father, the eldest son had remained in the State of New York, where he married and left descendants; a daughter, Janet, marrying Mr. Campbell, had removed to the State of Louisiana; whilst the remainder and a widowed mother had settled finally in the State of South Carolina. Scarce more than infants when their father died, his valuable papers having been destroyed at his home in Haverstraw on the Hudson during the war of the American Revolution, the lineage of Colonel Hay was unknown to his children beyond the tradition that he was directly descended from an ancient house. Hay of Erroll, confirmed by the following coat armor handed down to them: "A field argent charged with three shields gules within a bordure nebule of the last; for crest, a hand proper holding an ox-yoke; motto, 'Laboranti Palma.'" Book Legendary Locals of Edgecombe and Nash Counties

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Edgecombe and Nash Counties written by Monika S. Fleming and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich agricultural land of northeastern North Carolina was originally settled in the mid-18th century and, in 1777, divided into two counties: Edgecombe and Nash. In 1818, the Battle family established a textile mill that remained in operation for more than 175 years and became the basis for the city of Rocky Mount. The Atlantic Coastline Railroad chose the area as its repair shop in 1899 and, at the turn of the 20th century, the area was booming. Diverse communities produced outstanding educators, groundbreaking physicians, and business leaders. Residents included Olympians, baseball hall of famer Buck Leonard, and basketball greats Phil Ford and Buck Williams. Creative citizens became award-winning musicians, painters, and writers, like novelist Kaye Gibbons and entertainer Kaye Kyser. Military service in conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq War included generals, admirals, and a Medal of Honor recipient. Legendary Locals of Edgecombe and Nash Counties celebrates some of the individuals who have left their mark.

Download or read book From the Land of Vikings written by William Searson and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on the genealogy of the Searson family of South Carolina. As with any genealogy, I have tried to go back in time to find the earliest, or first, Searson to appear in the state and to bring their descendants up to the present time. My original purpose in doing this was because no one in my lineage, or on my side of the family, was absolutely sure about who our actual ancestors were. They had a general idea but a lot of their memories were guess-work as no one had kept an accurate, written account of past family members. To the best of my ability, I examined numerous sources for information to determine who was who, who they married, children they had, who were their siblings, where they lived, their occupation, when they died and where they were buried. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed researching the information and having it all come together after so many years of record keeping and then finally putting it down on paper.
