Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Solubilization tests and MEUF experiments were performed with an aqueous feed solution of benzoic acid (molecular weight 122) and Rhodameen T12/90 (molecular weight 798), a twin-head, cationic tertiary amine surfactant. This surfactant has an 18 carbon hydrophobic tail and two hydrophilic polyoxyethylene heads. The equilibrium solubilization of benzoic acid by surfactant solutions was measured by semiquilibrium dialysis. The maximum solubilization was nearly one mole of benzoic acid per mole of Rhodameen." --

Book Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration

Download or read book Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration written by Sirshendu De and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A response to increasingly stringent regulation of pollution and toxicity levels in industrial waste discharge, Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration: Fundamentals & Applications offers the most complete book available on the benefits and use of micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) to achieve continuous removal of organic and inorganic pollutants. An Unparalleled Book That Addresses Both Academic and Industrial Points of View Several membrane-based techniques, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, are currently used in a wide range of applications throughout the textile, pulp and paper, sugar, chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical, biotechnological, and food industries. However, although reverse osmosis is an effective means of removing contaminants, this book explains why MEUF is a better substitute, as it less expensive, less energy-intensive, and more efficient and practical for a wider range of applications. Topics covered include: Effects of pollution in water and its consequences Various treatment processes and membrane technologies Fundamentals of ultrafiltration Outline of various membrane modules and modeling approaches Principles of colloid chemistry Theories of micelle formation Stability and dynamics of micelles Phenomena of counterion binding Solubilization of organic pollutants Selection criteria for surfactants Various flux enhancement techniques Recovery of precious metals This book conveys how, with proper selection of surfactant and membrane, MEUF can be used to efficiently remove almost all metal ions (heavy metals, lanthanides, radioactive materials, etc.) with reasonably high efficiency and throughput. It also details the MEUF process for removal of inorganic (cations, anions, and their mixture) and organic pollutants. The authors explain how the economy of the overall process makes recovery and reuse of surfactants essential, and they address various influencing factors on the increase in throughput and the resulting operating problems. Elaborating on technologies involving precipitation and other methods, they also illustrate additional potential applications for MEUF technology.

Book excerpt: Surfactant micelle-assisted removal of ions and organic solutes from aqueous media by micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF), which is a membrane separation technique, is discussed in detail. Following general information about micellar structure, counterion binding, substrate solubilization, and medium effect functions of micelles which enable separation of cationic or anionic ions and organic molecules from aqueous media by MEUF are explained in a comprehensive manner. Some of the recent studies on removing pollutants from wastewater effluents of industrial plants by MEUF, and their results have been summarized to inform about the factors affecting the removal efficiency of this technique. Methods for recovery of surfactant and contaminants from retentate or permeate solutions are also given. Selective separation of metal ions of the same charge from multicomponent solutions is another topic of this chapter. In this context, the last part of the chapter provides an overview on every aspects of ligand modified MEUF (LM-MEUF) process. This report comprises a comprehensive review of MEUF and LM-MEUF studies in the literature.

Book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Download or read book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution written by Krister Holmberg and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2002-11-22 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many industrial formulations such as detergents, paints, foodstuff and cosmetics contain both surfactants and polymers and their interaction govern many of the properties. This book is unique in that it discusses the solution chemistry of both surfactants and polymers and also the interactions between the two. The book, which is based on successful courses given by the authors since 1992, is a revised and extended version of the first edition that became a market success with six reprints since 1998. Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution is broad in scope, providing both theoretical insights and practical help for those active in the area. This book contains a thorough discussion of surfactant types and gives information of main routes of preparation. A chapter on novel surfactants has been included in the new edition. Physicochemical phenomena such as self-assembly in solution, adsorption, gel formation and foaming are discussed in detail. Particular attention is paid to the solution behaviour of surfactants and polymers containing polyoxyethylene chains. Surface active polymers are presented and their interaction with surfactants is a core topic of the book. Protein-surfactant interaction is also important and a new chapter deals with this issue. Microemulsions are treated in depth and several important application such as detergency and their use as media for chemical reactions are presented. Emulsions and the choice of emulsifier is discussed in some detail. The new edition also contains chapters on rheology and wetting. Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution is aimed at those dealing with surface chemistry research at universities and with surfactant formulation in industry.

Book Surface Application of Paper Chemicals

Download or read book Surface Application of Paper Chemicals written by J. Brander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the exception of a slight hiccup during the height of the recent environmental movement (during the early 1990s), when for a year or two consumers were prepared to pay a price premium for lower quality recycled paper than for the virgin product, the inexorable improvement in the quality demanded of paper products continues. This demand for quality covers not only the aesthetics ofthe product but also its performance. Moreover, it is becoming increasingly the case that papers designed for a particular use must, as it were incidentally, also perform well in alternative applications. An example is that of office and printing papers, which are expected to perform as well in copier machines as in all the various forms of impact and non-impact printers. But even greater demands are made in other product areas, where board designed for dry foods can also be expected to protect moist and fatty materials and be made of 100% recycled fibre. The need to isolate foodstuffs from some of the contaminants that can affect recycled board is a· serious challenge. Thus, papermakers are constantly striving to meet a broadening spectrum of demands on their products; often while accepting declining quality of raw materials. The product design philosophy that has arisen in response to this is increasingly to isolate the bulk of a paper from its uses: to engineer the needed performance characteristics into the paper surfaces while more or less ignoring what happens inside.
