Book The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami

Download or read book The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami written by Chanelle Nyree Rose and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering new insights into Florida's position within the cultural legacy of the South, The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami explores the long fight for civil rights in one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Chanelle N. Rose examines how the sustained tourism and rapid demographic changes that characterized Miami for much of the twentieth century undermined constructions of blackness and whiteness that remained more firmly entrenched in other parts of the South. The convergence of cultural practices in Miami from the American South and North, the Caribbean, and Latin America created a border community that never fit comfortably within the paradigm of the Deep South experience. As white civic elites scrambled to secure the city's burgeoning reputation as the "Gateway to the Americas," an influx of Spanish-speaking migrants and tourists had a transformative effect on conventional notions of blackness. Business owners and city boosters resisted arbitrary racial distinctions and even permitted dark-skinned Latinos access to public accommodations that were otherwise off limits to nonwhites in the South. At the same time, civil-rights activists waged a fierce battle against the antiblack discrimination and violence that lay beneath the public image of Miami as a place relatively tolerant of racial diversity. In its exploration of regional distinctions, transnational forces, and the effect of both on the civil rights battle, The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami complicates the black/white binary and offers a new way of understanding the complexity of racial traditions and white supremacy in southern metropolises like Miami.

The question is, do they have what it takes to make it through and remain victorious or will the demons of the street win in the end? Jules Jr., better known as J2, is exceptionally smart. But no matter how gifted J2 is academically, the Baptiste blood runs through his veins, and despite his father’s disapproval, he decides that he wants in on his father's street legacy. No one can juggle running a drug empire and being a college student better than J2 and he's set on proving it. But his father always told him that when it comes to hustling, the bad outweighs the good, and J2 begins to see that. When he’s not dealing with incompetent, thieving workers, he has to deal with hustlers from out of town trying to infiltrate his blocks. Before he can spring into action, Jules comes to the rescue, making J2 feel some type of way. How can he prove that he’s just as good a boss as his father if his father won’t let him handle his own business? On top of that, J2 finds himself in a love triangle when he grows a little too fond of his homegirl Jazlyn, when his heart is supposed to belong to Natori. With all this happening around him, will J2 prove that he can live up to the legacy his father started before him and keep a hold on the matters of the heart? Jules always forbade his daughter, Reign, from dealing with hustlers, and she always listened. And when she starts dating a rapper by the name of Tre da Don, Jules is definitely not pleased. Jules doesn’t trust him as far as he can throw him, but Reign is smitten with the charming man, and soon she’s all in. It doesn’t take Reign long to realize that her father may have been right about Tre, and when he betrays Reign in the worst way, he may just have to pay with his life. Marital bliss should be a given but for Kymani it isn't. Although she hasn’t caught Jacques cheating in ages, she still has this unsettling feeling that something is going on behind the scenes. The feeling is nagging her to the point that Kymani takes drastic measures to find out the truth. They say be careful when you go looking for something because you just may find it, and she has to learn that the hard way. Kymani and Jacques’s relationship will never be the same, but in the end, will the changes be for the better? Lyric and Jules are happily married, and their love is stronger than ever, but Lyric is fighting a demon that no one knows about but her. She understands that she’s playing a dangerous game; however, no matter how much she tries to pretend, Lyric no longer has control over her life. When Jules is made aware of the secret, all hell breaks loose, and Lyric is forced to face her problems. The only thing is, she doesn’t think that there is anything to fix. Lyric thinks she’s fine, and that puts a strain on her marriage. Jules will never give her up without a fight, but Lyric may need help that even he can’t give her.

Book Anti american Terrorism From Eisenhower To Trump A Chronicle Of The Threat And Response Volume I The Eisenhower Through Carter Administrations

Download or read book Anti american Terrorism From Eisenhower To Trump A Chronicle Of The Threat And Response Volume I The Eisenhower Through Carter Administrations written by Dennis A Pluchinsky and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Pluchinsky's first volume focusing on anti-American terrorism is a densely packed and comprehensive look at one of the most complex US national security challenges our nation faces. It reflects the evolving nature of terrorism that has changed with the politics, technology, and media during this tumultuous period in US history. The book is also a thorough accounting of how US policymakers attempt to find solutions to address this dynamic issue. A broad spectrum of terrorism experts, policymakers, and casual reads will undoubtedly find noteworthy facts about terrorist attacks that targeted US interest abroad and at home in this volume. Pluchinsky's level of detail and strong qualitative methodology makes this work an essential desk reference for any serious terrorism scholar.'Studies in Intelligence 'This is a truly magisterial work of scholarship. By pulling all this material together in one place, and by organizing it so accessibly, Pluchinsky has performed an invaluable service for researchers and counter-terrorism practitioners alike … the real selling point is the factual content. Pluchinsky has written the definitive contextual history of US counter-terrorism policy and these volumes, and I confidently expect the two companion volumes still to come, deserve a place in every serious library of terrorism.'Critical Studies on TerrorismOne of the major international security concerns that surfaced in the post-World War II period was the emergence and evolution of international terrorism. The dominant theme in the evolution of this threat has been anti-American terrorism. No other country in the world has had its overseas interests subjected to the level, lethality, diversity, and geographic scope of international terrorist activity than the United States. This four-volume work recounts the development of this threat through 12 US presidential administrations over a 70-year period. It assesses the terrorist threat in the US and overseas and how the government has responded with counter-terrorism policies, strategies, programs, organizations, legislation, international conventions, executive orders, special operations units, and actions. The evolution of the field of terrorism in academia, think tanks, institutes, and the private sector over these 12 administrations is also chronicled.

Book The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami

Download or read book The Struggle for Black Freedom in Miami written by Abigail Cloud and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her first collection of poems, Abigail Cloud draws inspiration from nineteenth-century European Romantic ballets, which often portrayed scorned females as mystical spirits such as sylphs, shades, and wilis. Some of these creatures seduced men into dancing until they died -- punishment for inconstancy or lured them into love. For Cloud, the dark gravity that holds these enchanters to the earth is the same as our own and thus these demons are as everyday as air. Sylph filters our world through the lenses of dance, folklore, and history, revealing our contemporary lives to be dreamlike and prismatic. "In the blink the mouse spent to disappear, I loved you," avows the sylph. The cost of her ascension -- and ours -- is steep: "our price speech, our forgetting breath." Such are the stakes in this complex, seductive, and stunning debut.
