Book The Epidemiological Transition

Download or read book The Epidemiological Transition written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines issues concerning how developing countries will have to prepare for demographic and epidemiologic change. Much of the current literature focuses on the prevalence of specific diseases and their economic consequences, but a need exists to consider the consequences of the epidemiological transition: the change in mortality patterns from infectious and parasitic diseases to chronic and degenerative ones. Among the topics covered are the association between the health of children and adults, the strong orientation of many international health organizations toward infant and child health, and how the public and private sectors will need to address and confront the large-scale shifts in disease and demographic characteristics of populations in developing countries.

Book The Hunger Report 1993

Download or read book The Hunger Report 1993 written by Peter Uvin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1994-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Hunger Report: 1993" is the fifth in a series by the Brown University World Hunger Program. Drawing on numerous reports of hunger researchers, monitors, and policy makers, it classifies and clarifies their diverse data within a single typology of hunger caused by food shortage, food poverty, and food deprivation. Policy makers, academicians, and practitioners concerned with hunger and development will find this book an invaluable resource. In the year 1993, hunger was definitely on the international development agenda. The world has witnessed with mounting concern the needless persistence of hunger and, along with it, a proliferation of often-conflicting supporting data, a multiplication of often-conflicting institutional efforts, an escalation in political rhetoric, and an overall increase in media and public attention.

Book The Impact of the United Nations Human Rights Treaties on the Domestic Level

Download or read book The Impact of the United Nations Human Rights Treaties on the Domestic Level written by Christof Heyns and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six main United Nations human rights treaties enjoy almost universal ratification today. Almost 80 per cent of the possible ratifications have been made, and every Member State of the UN has ratified at least one of these treaties. The nearly universal acceptance of the treaties on the formal level, however, does not automatically translate into the norms contained in these documents being made a reality in the lives of the billions of people living in these countries. The treaty system is notoriously weak in terms of international enforcement, and there is a general suspicion that it has had little impact at the domestic level. Mechanisms to improve the international enforcement mechanisms of the six main treaties have been a topic of discussion and research for many years, but the domestic impact of the treaties has never been investigated in a systematic and comprehensive manner. This book constitutes the most ambitious attempt so far to establish the impact of the treaties at the domestic level. The following treaties in 20 United Nations Member States are investigated: the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Convention Against Torture, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This book reflects the findings of 20 researchers, based in the countries investigated, under the leadership of Professors Christof Heyns and Frans Viljoen of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, in a study done in co-operation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The influence of the treaties in each of the 20 countries is investigated in respect of its influence on the continuation, legislation, court cases, policies and practices, and the impact of the treaty system in civil society. In an overview chapter by the study leaders based on a comparison of the available data, common trends and patterns are identified, and recommendations about reforms on the national and international level are made. This is a book that should be read by all those interested in the development of the international human rights system.

Book UNICEF United Nations Children s Fund

Download or read book UNICEF United Nations Children s Fund written by Richard Jolly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of UNICEF’s development and operations, whilst exploring the significance of UNICEF’s achievements and the reasons behind them. UNICEF is one of the best known organizations of the United Nations system and the oldest of the UN’s development funds. It is also the part of the UN which consistently receives support from all countries round the world, including the United States. This book brings out the wider reasons for UNICEF’s success and popularity, setting them in the context of UNICEF’s evolution since 1946 and drawing lessons for other international organizations. The book argues that, despite its problems, international action for children, built substantially on non-economic foundations, is not only possible, but can be highly successful in mobilizing support, producing results and making a difference to the lives of millions of children. This will be of great interest to all scholars of international organisations, development, human rights and the United Nations system.

  • Author : Elena Jackson Albarran
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0803266820

Download or read book Seen and Heard in Mexico written by Elena Jackson Albarran and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades following the Mexican Revolution, children in the country gained unprecedented consideration as viable cultural critics, social actors, and subjects of reform. Not only did they become central to the reform agenda of the revolutionary nationalist government; they were also the beneficiaries of the largest percentage of the national budget. While most historical accounts of postrevolutionary Mexico omit discussion of how children themselves experienced and perceived the sudden onslaught of resources and attention, Elena Jackson Albarrán, in Seen and Heard in Mexico, places children’s voices at the center of her analysis. Albarrán draws on archived records of children’s experiences in the form of letters, stories, scripts, drawings, interviews, presentations, and homework assignments to explore how Mexican childhood, despite the hopeful visions of revolutionary ideologues, was not a uniform experience set against the monolithic backdrop of cultural nationalism, but rather was varied and uneven. Moving children from the aesthetic to the political realm, Albarrán situates them in their rightful place at the center of Mexico’s revolutionary narrative by examining the avenues through which children contributed to ideas about citizenship and nation.
