Book Contraband Corridor

Download or read book Contraband Corridor written by Rebecca B. Galemba and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexico-Guatemala border has emerged as a geopolitical hotspot of illicit flows of both goods and people. Contraband Corridor seeks to understand the border from the perspective of its long-term inhabitants, including petty smugglers of corn, clothing, and coffee. Challenging assumptions regarding security, trade, and illegality, Rebecca Berke Galemba details how these residents engage in and justify extralegal practices in the context of heightened border security, restricted economic opportunities, and exclusionary trade policies. Rather than assuming that extralegal activities necessarily threaten the state and formal economy, Galemba's ethnography illustrates the complex ways that the formal, informal, legal, and illegal economies intertwine. Smuggling basic commodities across the border provides a means for borderland peasants to make a living while neoliberal economic policies decimate agricultural livelihoods. Yet smuggling also exacerbates prevailing inequalities, obstructs the possibility of more substantive political and economic change, and provides low-risk economic benefits to businesses, state agents, and other illicit actors, often at the expense of border residents. Galemba argues that securitized neoliberalism values certain economic activities and actors while excluding and criminalizing others, even when the informal and illicit economy is increasingly one of the poor's only remaining options. Contraband Corridor contends that security, neoliberalism, and illegality are interdependent in complex ways, yet how they unfold depends on negotiations between diverse border actors.

Book Boundary Between Mexico and Guatemala

Download or read book Boundary Between Mexico and Guatemala written by Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boundary Between Mexico and Guatemala: Message From the President of the United States, Transmitting a Communication From the Secretary of State Relative to the Boundaries Between Mexico and Guatemala Sir: In previous dispatches I have had occasion to mention the nu satisfactory relations between Guatemala and Mexico, arising from their unsettled boundary line. I have now to report that these relations are growing still less satis factory, and that an open rupture between the two countries is not an improbable result of the. Near future. The state of Chiapas in Mexico, as well as Guatemala, belonged to the old captain-generalcy up to the period of the termination of the lat ter, when the people of the former state elected to attach themselves to Mexico, under the short reign of Iturbide, whom the Guatemaltecos new charge with having forced the state from them. A certain portion of Soconusco, a province of Chiapas, has become the modern bone of contention between the two countries, not so much because of the value of the territory perhaps, as because of an important river, with a fair harbor on the Pacific, which traverses it. Book Dynamics and Conflicts in a Cross Border Region

Download or read book Dynamics and Conflicts in a Cross Border Region written by Mónica Toussaint and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores several issues pertinent to the history of the cross-border region between Mexico, Guatemala and Belize from new explanatory approaches in order to reflect on a history and a reality that are shared by three neighbouring societies, emphasizing the actors and local practices that shape cross-border dynamics. This analysis is contributed by eight specialists who study aspects that are fundamental to our understanding of a process involving various persons and institutions in a specific space. Dynamics and Conflicts in a Cross-Border Region addresses an issue of current relevance through studies that focus on the problems inhabitants of the region have faced over the years: the realities of a porous border; the existence of family, trade and cultural ties that surpass the administrative limits negotiated by the states late in the 19th century; the impact of the internal conflicts of neighbour countries in the border space; experiences of exile and refuge at the border and the violence they entail; the role of local authorities in managing regional problems; the pending task of cross-border territorial organization; the efforts of local institutions to promote regional development; and the presence of phenomena like contraband, drug trafficking, organized crime and human trafficking in an increasingly complex and challenging space. This provides a way to use the region’s history as a springboard for conceiving of mechanisms by which we can together face the challenges presented today to the inhabitants of the cross-border region between Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. This book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Latin American history and Social History.
