Executive Directors commended the authorities for maintaining prudent fiscal and monetary policies in the face of financial turbulence in emerging markets and the slowdown in the United States. They appreciated the improved fiscal transparency and the robust banking system, and stressed the need to maintain macroeconomic stability. They appreciated the adequate international reserves, and agreed that the country's data are of good quality and adequate to conduct surveillance effectively.

Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultation highlights that the economic slowdown in the United States triggered a sharp weakening in Mexican economic activity in 2001 from the rapid pace in the preceding year. There was also a marked deceleration in domestic demand growth, as disposable income was adversely affected by a contraction in employment and confidence sagged. Economic activity rebounded strongly in the second quarter of 2002, as exports were supported by stronger demand from the United States and final domestic demand grew sharply.

Book excerpt: This 2005 Article IV Consultation highlights that the economic recovery in Mexico that began in mid-2003 has continued in 2005, though at a slower pace. A broad-based expansion of economic activity in 2004, driven by a rebound of private consumption and private investment, took growth up to 4.4 percent. The fiscal accounts improved in 2004 on the strength of rising oil revenues and restraint of current expenditures, and the authorities achieved their target for the traditional deficit of 0.3 percent of GDP.

Book Silent Revolution

Download or read book Silent Revolution written by James M. Boughton and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 1111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, fourth in a series of periodic histories of the institution, is as much a history of the world economy during 1979-89 as one of the IMF itself. Boughton discusses the IMF's surveillance of the international monetary system in the 1980s; the Fund's role in the international debt crisis of the 1980s, and IMF lending in support of structural adjustment in low-income countries during that period. The volume concludes with a general history of the institution, including the quota system, the SDR, membership, and other institutional matters.

Book Global Waves of Debt

Download or read book Global Waves of Debt written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.

Download or read book The Globalizers written by Ngaire Woods and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IMF and the World Bank have integrated a large number of countries into the world economy by requiring governments to open up to global trade, investment, and capital. They have not done this out of pure economic zeal. Politics and their own rules and habits explain much of why they have presented globalization as a solution to challenges they have faced in the world economy.—from the Introduction The greatest success of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank has been as globalizers. But at whose cost? Would borrowing countries be better off without the IMF and World Bank? This book takes readers inside these institutions and the governments they work with. Ngaire Woods brilliantly decodes what they do and why they do it, using original research, extensive interviews carried out across many countries and institutions, and scholarship from the fields of economics, law, and politics. The Globalizers focuses on both the political context of IMF and World Bank actions and their impact on the countries in which they intervene. After describing the important debates between U.S. planners and the Allies in the 1944 foundation at Bretton Woods, she analyzes understandings of their missions over the last quarter century. She traces the impact of the Bank and the Fund in the recent economic history of Mexico, of post-Soviet Russia, and in the independent states of Africa. Woods concludes by proposing a range of reforms that would make the World Bank and the IMF more effective, equitable, and just.

Book Is Transparency Good for You and Can the IMF Help

Download or read book Is Transparency Good for You and Can the IMF Help written by Yongseok Shin and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper finds that reforms introduced by the IMF to promote transparency have created more informed markets and reduced borrowing costs for those emerging market countries that volunteered for them. Using a quarterly panel estimation with fixed country effects, we find that sovereign spreads fall following the adoption of three different transparency reforms. The effects are economically important, especially for those countries with low initial transparency. We use two-stage least squares to address any endogeneity in the timing of reforms exploiting internal IMF timetables that are unrelated to country events. Next, using a panel GARCH specification, we show that spreads move more than normal in the days immediately following publication of IMF country documents.
