Book Patterns of Metropolitan Development

Book excerpt: This paper attempts to summarize many of these empirical regularities about metropolitan development and its determinants. Although much of our knowledge about metropolitan development is still imperfect, in the past 35 years a great deal of theoretical and empirical work has been carried out on cities and metropolitan areas in both developed and developing countries with market-oriented economies. This work has produced a set of empirical findings with remarkably strong regularities across countries and cities. Moreover, many of these empirical regularities are quite consistent with urban location theory and tend to indicate the broad applicability of our basic theory to market based cities. These regularities offer insights about the development and growth pressures that exist in many cities and indicate what directions future development is likely to take. It would be tempting to argue that all of the empirical regularities discovered are consistent with theory, have normative content, or reflect underlying outcomes that are efficient. In many cases this may be true, but care must be taken in drawing such conclusions because some of these stylized facts may be based on technological or demographic factors as much as they are theory or market outcomes. This paper - a joint product of the Research Advisory Staff and Transport, Water, and Urban Development Department - was presented at a conference on transport and regulation at Harvard University in September 1997.

Book Urban Development in Asia and Africa

Download or read book Urban Development in Asia and Africa written by Yuji Murayama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the urban growth trends and patterns of various rapidly growing metropolitan regions in developing Asian and African nations from the perspective of geography. State-of-the-art geospatial tools and techniques, including geographic information system/science and remote sensing, were used to facilitate the analysis. In addition to the empirical results, the methodological approaches employed and discussed in this book showcase the potential of geospatial analysis, e.g. land-change modeling for improving our understanding of the trends and patterns of urban growth in Asia and Africa. Furthermore, given the complexity of the urban growth process across the world, issues raised in this book will contribute to the improvement of future geospatial analysis of urban growth in the developing regions. This book is written for researchers, academicians, practitioners, and graduate students. The inclusion of the origin and brief history of each of the selected metropolitan regions, including the analysis of their urban primacy, spatiotemporal patterns of urban land-use changes, driving forces of urban development, and implications for future sustainable development, makes the book an important reference for various related studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are growing as never before and nowadays, it is estimated that at least 50% of the world's population lives in urban areas. This trend is expected to continue and simultaneously the problems in urban areas are anticipated to have an increase. Urbanization constitutes a complex process involving problems with social, economic, environmental and spatial dimensions that need appropriate solutions. This book highlights some of these problems and discusses possible solutions in terms of organisation, planning and management. The purpose of the book is to present selected chapters, of great importance for understanding the urban development issues, written by renowned authors in this scientific field. All the chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and they cover some basic aspects concerning urban sustainability, urban sprawl, urban planning, urban environment, housing and land uses. The editor gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Dr Marius Minea in reviewing two chapters.

Book Constructing Metropolitan Space

Download or read book Constructing Metropolitan Space written by Jill Simone Gross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little question today that processes of globalization affect national and local economies, governance processes, and conditions for economic competitiveness in the major urban regions of the world. In most liberal-democratic countries, these processes are occurring according to a rationale which attempts to combine strategies of state-supported development with increasing local-regional governmental decentralization and autonomy. Against this background, the issue of metropolitan development is being redefined worldwide, along with its institutional frameworks, modes of governance, policy instruments, and spatial planning strategies. The overarching assumption of this volume is that ‘metropolitan space’, far from being consolidated as a policy object, is currently being redefined and in some instances ‘constructed’ and contested as a scale, through a variety of policy practices related to spatial-economic development objectives. Through case studies drawn from across four continents, the authors reveal a range of interesting cross-national commonalities concerning the power that state actors, situated at various spatial scales, exert as agents in these processes. This volume interrogates key research issues raised by these developments, and is intended as a contribution to the establishment of a globally comparative analysis of the construction of metropolitan spaces and scales under conditions of globalization and neoliberalization.
