Book Metrical Tune Book With Hymns

Download or read book Metrical Tune Book With Hymns written by Philip Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metrical Tune Book, With Hymns: Revised and Enlarged Since Congregational Singing is becoming so universal in all Evangelical Churches, there is an increasing desire, on the part of Choristers and Choirs, to have a general Metrical Tune Book, without hymns. A book containing all the popular tunes from every source which can be used with any Hymn Book, and from which the Chorister can select a tune of his own choice. For such a purpose this book is now offered to the public. The following characteristics have been carefully observed in compiling the Metrical Tune Book: First. To have a book containing tunes in all meters, carefully selected from the whole fountain of Church music, including the oldest and newest, containing more tunes than is found in our common tune books. Second. Every leaf to present three different classes of tunes in the same meter; i.e., one old familiar tune, one modern tune, and one new tune. This gives variety on each page, suited to the tastes of the old, modern, and new. Third. To produce a complete Tune Book at the lowest possible expense, so that any church can afford to purchase for use with their own hymns; also, one not burdensome to hold in hand, even with the largest hymn look. Fourth. To offer a book not in any way calculated to do away with any of the Standard Hymn and Tune Books now in use, but one which can be used with or without such books, thereby giving a greater variety of Metrical Tunes, and also supplying a complete Tune Book for all who have only Hymn Books. Fifth. To give a book that no one denomination can claim, or object to, as it contains no sentiment or hymns, and one which is especially designed for all who love the worship of song in the Sanctuary, and can be used in connection with any selection of hymns or Hymn Book. Respectfully submitted, asking a careful examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Hymnal: A Choice Collection of Hymns and Tunes for Congregational and Social Worship In the compilation of the christian hymnal, the Trustees beg leave to say that, while they have had an eye to a just economy, they have, at the Same time, spared no means to make the book as perfect as possible. To this end, they have not only secured the best copyrighted music now in use, but have also had written expressly for this work a number of new tunes by some of the most talented and popular composers in this country. Such names as Dr. Thomas Hastings, T. J. Cook, John Zundel, T. E. Perkins, Silas J. Vail; Philip Phillips, W. H. Doane, Solon Wilder, A. Squire, etc., need only be mentioned to assure the superior character of the new music introduced. These men have all been in constant correspondence with the Editing Com mittee in Cincinnati, and have rendered valuable assistance in the preparation of the work. Thanks are especially due to Mr. W. H. Doane, of this city, for suggestions in reference to the general plan and style Of the book, as well as for his admirable contributions to it. The Editing Committee have kept constantly in view the importance or meeting the wants of all classes in our churches; hence they have attempted to bring the Old and New together in such a dress, and in such relations to each other, as that there shall be no incompatibility between them. The old standard tunes that have stood the test of long use will be found always to occupy the first place, while many familiar pieces, that are especially valuable because of endearing associations, have been harmonized expressly for this work by the best harmonists in the United States. These, with all other new arrangements, are marked with a star thus: - and should not be used in other works without permission. The same caution should be observed in reference to all music marked (new), such pieces having been written ex pressly for the christian hymnal. The hymns, with a few exceptions, have been selected from the Christian Hymn Book, and embrace every variety of meter in that book. An index has been arranged, in which all the omitted hymns of the Christian Hymn Book are referred to pages in this book where suitable tunes may be found. Hence a complete adaptation to the entire Hymn Book is provided for, and this, of itself, renders the hymnal invaluable, as it contains 'a larger variety of metrical music than any other book now published. Book With One Heart and One Voice

Download or read book With One Heart and One Voice written by Fred Kimball Graham and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication by John Wesley of the "Foundery" Collection (1742) marked the establishment of standards for tunes suited to Methodist hymn singing. Early Methodist hymn books in the United States contained words only, but they were cross-referenced with a leader's tune book, beginning with David's Companion (1808). "With One Heart and One Voice" reviews the trends surrounding the styles of tunes selected and analyzes the changes in shape and text for the most frequently used tunes in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Seventy six "core repertory" tunes are analyzed based upon their repeated appearances in most of the tune books published between 1808 and 1878, at which point Methodists finally obtained a hymnal with both words and music, after a half century of experimentation with tune selection. The conclusions reached in this work will allow scholars, hymnologists, and hymn singers to explore the social and musicological influences on hymn tune writing, how long it took for texts to acquire a "fixed tune," how tastes in hymn tunes change ever so slowly, and how many delightful tunes found in the core repertory of the 19th century have been dropped from today's repertoire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Tune Book and Metrical Companion to All Hymn Books: Three Hundred and Twenty Hymn Chorales, &C., Including the Choicest of Luther's and the Most Eminent English and Continental Composers, in About Eighty Different Metres Singing, in which the Musical Student will find ample directions for a correct celebration of the Songs of the Sanctuary. By a choice of Tunes we do not mean simply selecting from this collection of Hymn tunes the one most suited to a grave and serious expression in our places of worship, although we would be understood as including this also in the phrase, but principally, the after and practical adaptation of the Psalm or Hymn to be announced from the desk, to the tune most accordant in character therewith. As a rule, the Hymn and Tune should be chosen and determined previously, that the Leader may not be distracted by the process of mental comparison from the other duties of the service, and that Tune be invariably selected that may best correspond with the sentiment of the Hymn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Music and silence-how I detest them both!"Screwtape, under-secretary to the devil, The Screwtape Letters by C. S. LewisIt's easy to see why the enemies of mankind would hate and fear both sacred silence and sacred music. Both bring joy, spur contemplation, and draw the soul nearer to the Lord. Both have been part of our private prayer as well as our communal liturgy for thousands of years. The Psalms-biblical songs of praise, supplication, and wonder-have been sung for three thousand years. Naturally, Jesus, His disciples, and later the early Christian community also sang hymns (from the Greek word meaning "songs of praise"), as The New Testament makes clear. We sing because we love, and sung praise elevates our words, takes them out of the realm of the commonplace, and increases our joy. The holy pleasure of singing to God involves the entire person-spirit, heart, mind, and body-and unites us not only with the Divine but also with one another as a worshiping community. This collection of hymns for the singing Catholic congregation exemplifies the best of the genre. These songs are religiously orthodox, beautiful, sacred, and-for the most part-familiar. But here you will also find worthy hymn tunes and texts that are new to you.We present this book to propose not that hymns replace the proper chants for that days Mass* but live happily alongside them. In most instances the proper chants for processions are the prerogative of cantors and choirs and, as they change very day as part of the Mass aren't practical to be sung by the congregation. Hymns, on the other hand, belong to all the faithful and serve as a key means of the "active participation" spoken of in Vatican II's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. Hymns have been sung as an important part of the Liturgy of the Hours for century upon century, so they are nothing new, new only to be sung at Mass. "To promote active participation, the people should be encouraged to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalmody, antiphons, and songs, as well as by actions, gestures, and bodily attitudes. And at the proper times all should observe a reverent silence."Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Vatican II, 1963), Paragraph 30In a parish where the scriptures are sung, the introit will accompany the procession of the ministers and the cross. Clergy, choir, and people can then sing a congregational hymn. The same is true at offertory and Communion: hymns can follow the proper chants. And at the conclusion of Mass, a suitable hymn can send the people forth with the praise of Almighty God on their lips.May this book bring joy to all who sing from it! What is the source of the Sung Antiphons for the Roman liturgy Mass? The proper texts of the Antiphons of the Roman liturgy may be found in: Graduale Romanum; English translations of these texts are also widely available. The antiphons from the Roman Missal, third edition, may also serve as proper texts. For more information see: Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Vatican II, 1963), Musicam Sacram (Instruction on Music in the Liturgy, 1967)The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 2010.

Download or read book Let the People Sing written by Paul Westermeyer and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2005 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the voices of diverse Christian congregations have been empowered by shared, ecumenical hymns. In Let the People Sing: Hymn Tunes in Perspective, Paul Westermeyer provides a broad overview of selected hymn tunes, analyzing each for genre, earliest sources, creativity, and congregational appeal. Westermeyer completed a survey of 14 modern, multi--denominational English-language hymnals to find the tunes most representative of those sung in today's church. Organized chronologically, this study moves from the earliest tunes to those of the late 20th century. Although not encyclopedic in nature, Let the People Saying was inspired by Erik Routley's comprehensive work The Music of Christian Hymns, to which reference is often made. The author includes perspectives on various topics throughout, including the role of instruments in congregational singing, rote singing, the importance of appropriate tempo, and threats to the people's song. Thoroughly annotated, Let the People Saying also includes an appendix with Tune of the Day suggestions and an extensive bibliography for those desiring further study. This landmark book is a journey worth taking for church musicians, pastors, teachers, and anyone interested in enhancing congregational song. - Jacket flap.
