Numbered Treaties. Terra nullius. The Great Peace… Are you familiar with the terms listed above? In Indigenous Writes, Chelsea Vowel, legal scholar, teacher, and intellectual, opens an important dialogue about these (and more) concepts and the wider social beliefs associated with the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada. In 31 essays, Chelsea explores the Indigenous experience from the time of contact to the present, through five categories—Terminology of Relationships; Culture and Identity; Myth-Busting; State Violence; and Land, Learning, Law, and Treaties. She answers the questions that many people have on these topics to spark further conversations at home, in the classroom, and in the larger community. Indigenous Writes is one title in The Debwe Series.

Book Final Report of the Department of Research for Aboriginal Title of the Ontario M tis and Non Status Indian Association

Download or read book Final Report of the Department of Research for Aboriginal Title of the Ontario M tis and Non Status Indian Association written by Ontario Métis and Non-Status Indian Association. Dept. of Research for Aboriginal Title and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is presented as the final quarterly report of the Department of Research Aboriginal Title of the Ontario Metis and Non-Status Indian Association, in completion of a contract with the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Unlike our past quarterly reports, this document presents the results--rather than a description of the operational activity--of the claims research project undertaken in June of 1978 and completed March 31, 1980. It should be clearly understood that "this document is not a formal statement of claims" for purposes of negotiating a settlement of the claims. It is, however, a comprehensive presentation of the Association's position on the "potential aboriginal claims" of Metis and Non-Status Indian in Ontario. The Association perceives this document as a majour step in an ongoing process of consultative interaction with Federal authorities to establish and valide potential claims, and to develop a negotiative framework for settlement of the precise claims of Metis and Non-Status Indians in Ontario, when, and as, these claims are presented.

  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2014-05-12

  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book M tis written by Chris Andersen and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask any Canadian what “Métis” means, and they will likely say “mixed race.” Canadians consider Métis mixed in ways that other indigenous people are not, and the census and courts have premised their recognition of Métis status on this race-based understanding. According to Andersen, Canada got it wrong. Our very preoccupation with mixedness is not natural but stems from more than 150 years of sustained labour on the part of the state and others. From its roots deep in the colonial past, the idea of “Métis as mixed” has pervaded the Canadian consciousness until it settled in the realm of common sense. In the process, “Métis” has become a racial category rather than the identity of an indigenous people with a shared sense of history and culture. Andersen asks all Canadians to consider the consequences of adopting a definition of “Métis” that makes it nearly impossible for the Métis nation to make political claims as a people.
