Book Farming While Black

Download or read book Farming While Black written by Leah Penniman and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Farming While Black is the first comprehensive "how to" guide for aspiring African-heritage growers to reclaim their dignity as agriculturists and for all farmers to understand the distinct, technical contributions of African-heritage people to sustainable agriculture. At Soul Fire Farm, author Leah Penniman co-created the Black and Latino Farmers Immersion (BLFI) program as a container for new farmers to share growing skills in a culturally relevant and supportive environment led by people of color. Farming While Black organizes and expands upon the curriculum of the BLFI to provide readers with a concise guide to all aspects of small-scale farming, from business planning to preserving the harvest. Throughout the chapters Penniman uplifts the wisdom of the African diasporic farmers and activists whose work informs the techniques described--from whole farm planning, soil fertility, seed selection, and agroecology, to using whole foods in culturally appropriate recipes, sharing stories of ancestors, and tools for healing from the trauma associated with slavery and economic exploitation on the land. Woven throughout the book is the story of Soul Fire Farm, a national leader in the food justice movement." --

Book Farmers taking the lead thirty years of farmer field schools

Download or read book Farmers taking the lead thirty years of farmer field schools written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Farmer Field School (FFS) has been one of the most successful approaches developed and promoted by FAO over the past three decades, empowering farmers to become better decision makers in their own farming systems. Initiated by FAO in 1989, and subsequently adopted by many other organizations and institutions, the FFS programs constitute one of the most important “results of the collective action of millions of small-scale farmers” that FAO has supported. FFS is an interactive and participatory learning by doing approach that offers farmers, pastoralists, fisherfolks, foresters and their communities a place where they can learn from each other, share experiences, co-create knowledge and try new ways of doing. Participants enhance their understanding of agro-ecosystems, resulting in production systems that are more resilient and optimize the use of available resources. FFS aims to improve farmers’ livelihoods and recognize their role as innovators and guardians of natural environments. FFS has attained plenty of outstanding achievements in all aspects of agriculture and rural development.

Book The Training of Farmers

Download or read book The Training of Farmers written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Farmers The so-called rural problem is one of the great public questions of the day. It is the problem of how to develop a rural civilization that is permanently satisfying and worthy of the best desires. It is a complex problem, for it involves the whole question of making the farms profitable (that is, of improving farming methods), perfecting the business or trade relations of farming people, and developing an active and efficient social structure. As the problem is complex, so there is no simple or easy solution. The present status is, of course, a phase or stage in social evolution; and the improvement of the condition must be a process of further evolution. Book Soil testing methods manual

Download or read book Soil testing methods manual written by FAO/GSP and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soil Doctors programme is developed under the umbrella of the Global Soil Partnership and promotes the establishment of a farmer-to-farmer training system. The Soil Doctors Global Programme aims to build the capacity of smallholder farmers on the practice of sustainable soil management and, by doing so, support governmental agencies and organizations working on agricultural extension at the field level (promoting broader impact and a reduction of costs). Trainings will also rely on the establishment of demonstration farms and experimental fields by the Soil Doctors, which might attract the interest of research institutes and universities involved in the programme. The programme also aims to educate farmers on soil science principles for practices of sustainable soil management and aims to achieve this by providing them with a set of tools composed of some educational materials and a soil testing methods (STM) manual for preliminary soil analysis. The STM is a collection of locally relevant, and easy to use, soil analyses procedures that would be selected by each area where the program is implemented.

Book Evaluation of Training Methods in an Urban Agriculture Apprenticeship Program

Download or read book Evaluation of Training Methods in an Urban Agriculture Apprenticeship Program written by Jesse R. Gilmore and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place-based education is used throughout agricultural education as a means of experiential learning and is a powerful tool for training adult beginning farmers due to its ability to provide context, utility, independence, and use for previous experiences in the learning process. Apprenticeship - one method of place-based learning - is widespread in United States agriculture, particularly in the organic vegetable production sector. Researchers have analyzed the goals of apprenticeship programs and their training methods, but little research exists analyzing the effectiveness of these training methods. Growing Growers is an Extension-partnered apprenticeship program in Kansas City that offers participants sustainable agriculture training in three learning environments: workshops, host farm mentoring, and experiential, employment-based learning. This training and instructional format provides a unique opportunity to analyze the effectiveness of learning environments in an agricultural context. A survey was developed to understand the training methods of the program's host farms and preferred learning environments of program participants. Following survey distribution, the results were used to identify effective learning environments, and recommendations are made for the improvement of Growing Growers as well as similar programs. Survey results indicated that participants preferred formal environments for four learning objectives, mentoring for two learning objectives, field work for three learning objectives, and had no learning environment preference for five learning objectives. Additionally, participants indicated that nine learning objectives need formal educators, and eight need contextual application. Three learning objectives (production planning, small farm equipment, insect management) require both formal educators and contextual application. Respondents almost unanimously indicated that their business management training was lacking, confirming previous research that mentioned apprenticeship programs' inability to connect participants to business start-up resources. In particular, participants were not comfortable with land acquisition and capital, which prevented many apprentices from pursuing commercial food production. Recommendations regarding future changes to the program concern business management education, including adding project-based business plan development, providing locations for apprentices to contextually apply business management knowledge, and exploring alternatives to land acquisition.
