Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Lawn Tennis Players: Their Methods Illustrated Perhaps the quickest way to improve at any game is to constantly play with those superior to ourselves possibly the next best thing is to watch the great exponents and failing both of these I venture to think action-photographs are good substitutes. But these only show, in the matter of teaching, what one has trained the eye to see. Yet action-photographs will influence where technical knowledge is lacking. My thanks are due to the various players who so kindly helped me in every way, and also to the all-england Lawn Tennis Club and Queen's Club. Book Methods and Players of Modern Lawn Tennis

Download or read book Methods and Players of Modern Lawn Tennis written by J. Parmly Paret and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Players of Modern Lawn Tennis I Have no patience with the players who say: "I do not read books on lawn tennis, and have no use for fine-spun theories." Mediocrity is almost always their portion. Their enjoyment of the game suffers because they neither theorise themselves nor study the theories evolved by others. When, about fifteen years ago, I began to play lawn tennis with some seriousness, my first thought was to secure instruction from the leading writers on the game. To a close study of the rules for rudimentary play laid down by, singularly enough, J. Parmly Paret in the Spalding Guide of that day, I owe, in considerable measure, what small portion of skill I have managed to accumulate. In particular, my possession of a backhand that is passable is due directly to Parct's admonitions on this subject. An understanding of my own needs has taught me what other players need. Furthermore, as publisher of "American Lawn Tennis" I have sold thousands of books on the game, which has made it possible for me to learn what the average player wants in a book. Out of this knowledge grew the determination to produce such a book, and the present volume is the result of that determination. Its title, "Methods and Players of Modem Lawn Tennis," designates it exactly. It deals with methods and players exclusively, and is designed to be a textbook for players desirous of improving their play. That it will accomplish this purpose, if closely and intelligently studied, I am absolutely convinced. I have been profoundly impressed with the success of the efforts the author has made to produce a book that would make a three-fold appeal to the beginner, to the average player and to the expert. The beginner will find in these pages a work that will start him right on the path to proficiency and ground him in the elements of the game. The average player will have before him a textbook that deals exhaustively with the production of strokes and their uses and the employment of proper tactics and generalship on the court. The expert, finally, will discover here much food for thought, no matter how thoroughly he may know the game. The book contains the most wonderful compilation of expert opinions that has ever been made. In laying the structure of the work, a series of over forty questions was drawn up, each dealing with some disputed point of play. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strokes and Science of Lawn Tennis I have been compelled to illustrate these strokes myself, for there is no player in England who plays them. Here and there one finds a person who uses one or two of them, but it would, in a work of this nature, be obviously impossible to collect photographs of a great number of different players. These strokes are not here laid down as being the most perfect because I play them so. They are the most natural and effective strokes known, and are the result of the experience of practically all the most famous players in the world, except Messrs. R. F. And H. L. Doherty. This statement I shall refer to later on. It is confidently anticipated that this book will prove of great assistance, not only to beginners but to those players who, on account of their defective hold of the racket, cannot produce the best Lawn Tennis strokes. Doherty on Lawn Tennis But, though English and American players vary in style from one another and among them selves, yet constant play against all sorts of opponents in all sorts of places under all condi tions - on courts of grass, wood, gravel, sand, asphalte, concrete; in weather dull, rainy, bright, burning - has made as sure that there are some instructions which can have very few exceptions. On these general principles we have laid great stress, and in order to impress them upon the reader we have purposely left out a great deal about the history of the game, &c. Book How to Play Lawn Tennis

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Play Lawn Tennis: Containing Pracitical Instruction From an Expert Lawn tennis is played by two, three or four people (though very seldom by three) on a smooth stretch of ground called a court. The playing surface of this court is 27 feet (for singles), or 36 feet (for doubles) in width and 78 feet in length, and it is laid out on a level surface of grass or turf, or occasion ally on a board floor under a covered roof in winter. The court is marked out with white lines on the ground indicating the boundaries, and the space is divided in two by a net three feet in height stretched across the centre from side to side. Each player is armed with a racket. Which is a wooden frame about a foot long and eight inches wide, the oval open space being covered with a fine network of catgut strings, and the frame supplied with a handle about 15 inches long. With this racket the players strike a ball 2% inches in diameter, of rubber filled with compressed air and covered with felt. This ball is knocked from one side of the net to the other back and forth until one side misses it - that is, fails to hit it at all, or knocks it into the net, or out of the court. Either side scores a point when the opponent. Fails to return the ball into his court. The object of the game, therefore, is to knock the ball into the opponent's court so that he cannot return it.
