Book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint written by J. A. Joseph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History Now why should we study history at all? First, it possesses the greatest guidance value among the several branches. There is much truth in the old saying, History repeats itself, and that ages differ more in kind than in degree. Where one age develops a fact of civilization in a certain way, or works out an advanced position for man, it will do it much the same way another time. There are certain inevitable truths controlling the ages, and when an age repeats itself, the corre sponding truth will be found leading its move ments. The things that killed Greece would kill America; the force that united the world under Rome, would unite the world again. The ele ments that destroyed Rome, would destroy any empire in any age. A late profound scholar and historian has said The present is the fruit Of the past, and the germ of the future. NO work can stand unless it grows out Of the real wants Of the age and strikes firm root in the soil Of history. No one who tramples on the rights Of a past gen cration can claim the regard of its posterity History will disregard him who disregards her. Set at naught the lessons Of history, and no man shall wield any lasting influence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History If the present is the fruit of the past, there is no more valuable study than history. But the value depends so much upon the method of study and the means of presenting it. It is impossible to secure a correct comparative value of any study, for one teacher will make it of a much more or less value than another. But studies do have an inherent value. Arithmetic develops the mind in a certain way and has a certain purpose. The same is true of geography or history. The teacher ought first ask himself why do we study this subject or that one. Where does it most naturally apply, and how may it be best applied? In teaching a subject, then, I would consider the two parts; first, value; second, methods; or why first and how second. Book Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method Classic Reprint written by Emma M. Ridley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. A list of the books referred to with the publishers' names is given for the use of any who may be selecting libraries for school or private use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Library Manual of the Constitutional and Political History of the United States, With Outlines, References and Tables: An Adaptation of the Laboratory Method of Investigation, for the Use of Students of United States History In the universities and colleges, history was one of the first branches to benefit from the reform. Young professors, returning from Germany, imbued with the enthusiasm for careful and scientific research that prevails in the great continental universities introduced the seminar and the laboratory into the new history courses recently offered by all our higher institutions of education. Men have learned that there is as much fascination in conducting a research in history as in chemistry - frequently the results are more valuable. But the reform has made itself felt but slowly and feebly in schools of elementary and secondary rank. The dry-as-dust text books and monotonous daily recitation of the same committed to memory have remained in the high schools, normal schools and smaller colleges. Book American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book American History Classic Reprint written by Lewis W. Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History Not a great deal depends upon the form of notation used in an outline, provided the form adopted is consistently followed, and provided further that it may be easily comprehended and followed by the pupil Like the use of capital letters, punctuation, inden-tion-of paragraphs, and so forth, the use of indention and notation in an outline is for purposes of mental economy. When, because of proper indention, a simple and logical notation, and a clear, definite, and suggestive wording in an historical outline, the student is enabled in the shortest possible time to form a full and correct mental connection between any given subject and the larger subject or subjects of which it is a part, the author of an outline has gone as far as possible in assisting the student's thought process. The form of notation which it has seemed best to adopt for this outline is the following: Capital let ters, capital letters in parentheses, Roman numerals, Roman numerals in parentheses, Arabic numerals, Arabic numerals in parentheses, small Roman numerals, small Roman numerals in parentheses, small letters, and small letters in parentheses. Thus: A, (a), I, (i), I, (i), i, (i) a, (a). The letters are used only where there are so few coordinate parts as not to be confusing. The author of this outline has succeeded best with this method. Another problem in outlining a course in history for class work is that of properly combining period. Or chronological analysis with subject or movement analysis. By an historical movement I mean a series of historical facts or events relating to the same subject and linked together by cause and effect: such, for in stance, as, Territorial Expansion of the United States from 1789 to the Present. By a period of history is meant a certain block of time within which a particular movement or tendency seems to predominate. The almost exclusive use of movement analysis would be preferable were the aim of the course in American history solely to reorganize and interpret facts and events already familiar to the student. But since no such familiarity exists among our students at the beginning of the course, we are {compelled to analyze the general progress of history much in the way that it actually occurred. In this outline, there fore, I have attempted, while following the development of history by periods, to adhere as much as possible to movement analysis. For this reason, I have not always followed the topical order of treatment in any textbook. Indeed, this is unnecessary either in an outline or in the recitation.
