The result is less efficient markets, leading to higher prices and lower wages.

Book Mainstreams in Industrial Organization

Download or read book Mainstreams in Industrial Organization written by H.W. de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present two volumes contain the essays and part of the discussions as presented at the conference on Mainstreams in Industrial Organiza tion, held at the University of Amsterdam, 21-23 August 1985. The thema was chosen because the field of studies commonly designated "industrial organization" in the Anglo-Saxon countries, or "market theory" in Continental Europe, has experienced important alterations during the past decade. Partly this reflects changing theoretical views inside the field, in which shifts in the core concepts have occurred and different emphasis is laid on time-honoured views and results. Partly, critical views have been voiced from outside the field. As in all open scientific debate, they have to be weighed and, if necessary, taken into account. Partly also, diver gent developments in thinking between the Anglo-Saxon, European and Japanese areas need to be considered, because both the problems and the ways of approaching them still differ. The variety of views, theori~s and results is testimony to the vitality of this field of economics; variety is generated by the creative endeavours, from which the chaff is being beaten out by critical discussions. That is especially true for the concept of competition itself, which industrial organization economists are debating intensively.

Book Media Ownership and Concentration in America

Download or read book Media Ownership and Concentration in America written by Eli Noam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-19 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have worried for many years about the concentration of private power over the media, as evidenced by controversy over Federal Communication Commission rulings on broadcast ownership limits. The fear, it seems, is of a media mogul with a political agenda: a new William Randolph Hearst who could help start wars or run for political office using the power of the media. In the light of these concerns about freedom of speech, Eli Noam provides a comprehensive survey of media concentration in America, covering everything from the early media empire of Benjamin Franklin to the modern-day cellular phone industry.

Download or read book Hidden Innovation written by Stuart Cunningham and published by University of Queensland Press(Australia). This book was released on 2013 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the divergence in world views and methods between scientists and the creative sector, innovation systems and policies have focused for decades on science, engineering, technology, and medicine. The humanities, arts, and social sciences have had their contributions hidden from research agendas, policy and program initiatives, and the public mind. But structural changes to advanced economies and societies have brought service industries and the creative sector to greater prominence as key contributors to innovation. Hidden Innovation peels back the veil, tracing the way innovation occurs through new forms of screen production enabled by social media platforms as well as in public broadcasting. It shows that creative workers are contributing fresh ideas across the economy, and traces how policies are beginning to catch up with the changing social and economic realities, on a global level. Hidden Innovations argues that the innovation framework offers the best opportunity in decades to reassess the case for the public role of the humanities, particularly the media and cultural and communication studies.
