Book Estimating the Value of Truck Travel Time Reliability

Download or read book Estimating the Value of Truck Travel Time Reliability written by Sebastian E. Guerrero and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel time reliability is frequently cited as an important metric for the trucking community and users of truck freight services. While the travel time reliability for trucking is commonly measured, truck reliability is seldom considered in the benefit-cost evaluation of mobility projects, which under represents the benefits accrued to freight users of the highway system. For NCHRP Project 07-24, WSP was asked to develop an improved framework for the valuation of truck freight reliability. The framework included the methodology, modeling assumptions, analytical techniques, and tools developed in NCHRP Report 824 to assist transportation professionals and decision-makers in the evaluation of proposed roadway infrastructure and operations investments.

Book excerpt: This primer provides a foundation for understanding the role of economic analysis in highway decision making. It is oriented toward state and local officials who have responsibility for assuring that limited resources get targeted to their best uses and who must publicly account for their decisions. Economic analysis is presented as an integral component of a comprehensive infrastructure management methodology that takes a long-term view of infrastructure performance and cost. The primer encompasses a full range of economic issues, including economic fundamentals, life-cycle cost analysis, benefit-cost analysis, forecasting traffic for benefit calculations, risk analysis and economic impact analysis.

Book Framework and Tools for Estimating Benefits of Specific Freight Network Investments

Download or read book Framework and Tools for Estimating Benefits of Specific Freight Network Investments written by and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report provides a comprehensive analytical framework and related tools that private-sector freight transportation modes and public-sector transportation interests can use to estimate private and public benefits to evaluate potential freight infrastructure investments. Using interviews with transportation planners and an extensive review of prior research and a review of current methods used to assess freight benefits or prioritize improvement projects, the research developed a freight evaluation framework with three main functions: (1) to enhance public planning and decision-making processes regarding freight; (2) to supplement benefit/cost assessment with distributional impact measures; and (3) to advance public-private cooperation. The framework is capable of handling projects that span all of the different modes and able to assess benefits from a variety of project types, including those that improve freight operations, as well as generate more capacity through infrastructure expansion. The research, by developing a practical set of formats for information collection, will support public-private agency discussions by helping all parties understand the wide range of perspectives and interests in potential freight investments."--Pub. desc.

Book Evaluating Alternative Operations Strategies to Improve Travel Time Reliability

Download or read book Evaluating Alternative Operations Strategies to Improve Travel Time Reliability written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (U.S.) and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report from the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2), which is administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, sets out requirements for travel time reliability within a performance-based planning process. The research includes an effort to determine the economic value of improvements in travel time reliability by applying options theory from the financial sector. The report includes two succinct tables that describe requirements for person and freight trips for reliable transport, as well as a forecast of the year 2030 under alternative assumptions that may influence travel time reliability.

Book International Handbook on Transport and Development

Download or read book International Handbook on Transport and Development written by R. Hickman and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last forty years or so the research field exploring the relationship and interaction between transport and development has developed rapidly. While sophistication in analysis has increased, understanding the effective integration of transport and development often remains poor in theory and in practice - with sometimes devastating effects. This Handbook provides a comprehensive analysis of both the current and emerging thinking in this field, drawing on multidisciplinary thinking in transport planning, transport, urban and spatial economics, and the wider social sciences. With 45 chapters from leading international authors, the book is organised around three main themes: urban structure and travel; transport and spatial impacts; wider dimensions in transport and development. The chapters each present commentary on key issues within these themes, presenting the debate on the impacts of urban structure on travel, the impacts of transport investment on development, and social and cultural change on travel. A multitude of competing inter-disciplinary perspectives are considered - leaving the reader with an invaluably comprehensive and critical understanding of the field. This major Handbook will serve as a guide for undergraduates and graduate students, researchers, consultants, and also practitioners and policy makers, wishing to find a comprehensive and original reference to research on transport and development.

Book Evaluating Alternative Operations Strategies to Improve Travel Time Reliability

Download or read book Evaluating Alternative Operations Strategies to Improve Travel Time Reliability written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research included an effort to determine the economic value of improvements in travel time reliability by applying options theory from the financial sector. This method is predicated on determining the certainty equivalent of the variability of speed. This innovative approach, briefly summarized in the body of the report and described in an appendix, deserves further exploration despite the lack of consensus from experts about its validity. A prominent part of the report presents a forecast of the year 2030 under alternative assumptions that may influence travel time reliability. The researchers set out three alternative outcomes--optimistic, mediocre, and pessimistic--regarding climate change, economics, and demographics. In addition, they examined a range of technological developments that might affect reliability. To paint a picture of the future, they prepared a concept of operations for the year 2030.
