Book Methodist Worthies Vol 2

Download or read book Methodist Worthies Vol 2 written by George John Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Worthies, Vol. 2: Characteristic Sketches of Methodist Preachers of the Several Denominations, With Historical Sketch of Each Connexion Ebenezer Evans Jenkins, brother of David James Jenkins, m.p. For F almouth, and uncle of E. Jenkins, author of Ginx's Baby, The Devil's Chain, and other works, was born at Exeter, l0th May, 1820, and was educated at Mr. Gould's Grammar School, Exeter, where, by diligence and perseverance, he laid the foundation of that knowledge which has enabled him to pursue a most honourable career in literature. Although his pro gress in learning justified his being sent out into the ministry without what is known as a theological training, yet the careful manner in which he has cultivated his own mind, and used every opportunity for increas ing his knowledge, shows what can be done in that department without the useful facilities afforded by theological training institutions. At the age of fifteen years, he gave his heart to God, and set himself diligently to the use of the means of grace in the Methodist society, of which he early became a member. There are still living in London some who remember his first efforts made as a local preacher in Devon shire forty years ago. His successful labours in that service led the Rev. Henry Castle, the superintendent minister in the Teignmouth circuit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Methodist Worthies Vol 1 written by George John Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Worthies, Vol. 1: Characteristic Sketches of Methodist Preachers of the Several Denominations, With Historical Sketch of Each Connexion In a remarkable manner the Spirit of God gave most convincing evidence of the completeness of the change which had been wrought by faith in both the brothers. This was more distinctly and emphati cally shown by the spiritual awakening which accompanied and followed the preaching of John Wesley. He had to preach in St. Mary's Church, Oxford, before the University. His text was, By grace are ye saved through faith and he explained the new doctrine with a clearness, fulness, and force which had not been known before in that famous seat of learning. That sermon was printed and widely circulated. It was followed by another on God's free grace, in which, with equal lucidity and power, he set forth the doctrine that the grace and love of God is free in all, and free for all. This sermon was printed in a cheap form; and those sermons, repeated in various forms and places, gave birth to the greatest revival of religion the world has ever known. Book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology

Download or read book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology written by James E. Pedlar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revivalism was one of the main causes of division in nineteenth century British Methodism, but the role of revivalist theology in these splits has received scant scholarly attention. In this book, James E. Pedlar demonstrates how the revivalist variant of Methodist spirituality and theology empowered its adherents and helped foster new movements, even as it undermined the Spirit’s work through the structures of the church. Beginning with an examination of unresolved issues in John Wesley’s ecclesiology, Pedlar identifies a trend of increasing marginalization of the church among revivalists, via an examination of three key figures: Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), James Caughey (1810-1891), and William Booth (1860-1932). He concludes by examining the more catholic and irenic theology of Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932), the leading Methodist revivalist of the early twentieth century who became a strong advocate of Methodist Union. Pedlar shows that these theological differences must be considered, alongside social and political factors, in any well-rounded assessment of the division and eventual reunification of British Methodism.

Book Thomas Wride and Wesley s Methodist Connexion

Download or read book Thomas Wride and Wesley s Methodist Connexion written by Clive Murray Norris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the life and writings of an itinerant preacher in John Wesley’s Methodist Connexion, Thomas Wride (1733-1807). Detailed studies of such rank and file preachers are rare, as Methodist history has largely been written by and about its leadership. However, Wride’s ministry shows us that the development of this worldwide movement was more complicated and uncertain than many accounts suggest. Wride’s attitude was distinctive. He was no respecter of persons, freely criticising almost everyone he came across, and in doing so exposing debates and tensions within both Methodism and wider society. However, being so combative also led him into conflict with the very movement he sought to promote. Wride is an authentic, self-educated, and non-élite voice that illuminates important features of Eighteenth-Century life well beyond his religious activities. He sheds light on his contemporaries’ attitudes to issues such as the role of women, attitudes towards and the practice of medicine, and the experience and interpretation of dreams and supernatural occurrences. This is a detailed insight into the everyday reality of being an Eighteenth-Century Methodist minister. As such, this text will be of interest to academics working in Methodist Studies and Religious History, as well as Eighteenth-Century History more generally.

Book A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain Volume Four

Download or read book A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain Volume Four written by Rupert E. Davies and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this volume the publication of A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain comes to its appointed end. The project of writing it was initiated by the Methodist Conference of 1953, and the lapse of time since then has made it possible to include at appropriate points the results of the continuing research into the origins and nature of Methodism; but 'the chance and changes of this mortal life', which are bound to impinge on the progress of so complex an enterprise, together with the heavy involvement of all the contributors in ecclesiastical, ecumenical and academic affairs, have made this period much longer than the General Editors would have wished." -- From the Preface
