Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th Towards the end of the 19 century some researchers put forward the hypothesis that the Polar regions may play the key role in the shaping of the global climate. This supposition found its full confirmation in empirical and th model research conducted in the 20 century, particularly in recent decades. The intensification of the global warming after about 1975 brought into focus the physical causes of this phenomenon. The first climatic models created at that time, and the analyses of long observation series consistently showed that the Polar regions are the most sensitive to climatic changes. This aroused the interest of numerous researchers, who thought that the examination of the proc esses taking place in these regions might help to determine the mechanisms responsible for the "working" of the global climatic system. To date, a great number of publications on this issue have been published. However, as a re view of the literature shows, there is not a single monograph which comprises the basic information concerning the current state of the Arctic climate. The last study to discuss the climate of the Arctic in any depth was published in 1970 (Climates a/the Polar Regions, vol. 14, ed. S. Orvig) by the World Survey of Climatology, edited by H. E. Landsberg. This publication, however, does not provide the full climatic picture of many meteorological elements.

Book Surface Climates of Canada

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy R. Oke
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 1998-01-15
  • ISBN : 0773563571
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Surface Climates of Canada written by Timothy R. Oke and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1998-01-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opening chapters contributors lay out the large-scale context of the physical climate of Canada, introducing the processes, balances, and dynamic linkages between the surface and atmosphere that create and maintain the diversity of surface climates found in Canada as well as outlining the nature of the physical processes that operate near the ground's surface. Individual chapters are dedicated to snow and ice - the almost universal surface cover in Canada - and the other major natural surface environments of Canada: ocean and coastal zones, fresh water lakes, wetlands, arctic islands, low arctic and subarctic lands, forests, and alpine environments. The final part of the book considers those surface environments that have been strongly influenced by human activity, such as agricultural lands and urban environments, and examines the prospects for future climate change. Bringing together for the first time a wide range of scholarship by leading climatologists, The Surface Climates of Canada will be an indispensable tool for understanding Canada's surface climates and the processes responsible for their creation and control. Contributors include Brian D. Amiro (AECL), W.G. Bailey (Simon Fraser), Richard Bello (York), Terry J. Gillespie (Guelph), Barry E. Goodison (Atmospheric Environment Service), F. Kenneth Hare (emeritus professor, Toronto), L.D. Danny Harvey (Toronto), Owen Hertzman (Dalhousie), Peter M. Lafleur (Trent), J. Harry McCaughey (Queen's), Linda Mortsch (Environment Canada), R. Book The Joint Arctic Weather Stations

Download or read book The Joint Arctic Weather Stations written by Daniel Heidt and published by . This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Arctic Weather Stations were five meteorological and scientific monitoring stations constructed at Resolute, Eureka, Mould Bay, Isachsen, and Alert with the cooperation of the Canadian Department of Transport's meteorological branch and the United States Weather Bureau. From 1947 to the early 1970s as few as four Canadians and four Americans worked and lived at each of the four satellite stations, observing and collecting scientific data. This is the first systematic account of the Joint Arctic Weather Stations, a project that profoundly shaped state activates and scientific inquiry in the Arctic Archipelago. Drawing on extensive archival evidence, unpublished personal memoirs, and interviews with former employees, The Joint Arctic Weather Stations analyzes the diplomatic, scientific, social, military, and environmental dimensions of the program alongside each station as a nexus of state planning and personal agency. Contrary to previous scholarship, The Joint Arctic Weather Stations reveals that Canadian officials sought--and achieved--a firm policy that afforded effective control of Canada's Arctic while enjoying the advantages of American contribution to the joint meteorological program. It explores the changing ways science was conducted over time and how the details of everyday life at remote stations, from the climate to leisure activities to debates over alcohol, hunting, and leadership, shaped the program's effectiveness. An exploration of the full duration of the Joint Arctic Weather Stations from high-level planning and diplomacy to personal interactions in the stations makes this book an essential exploration of collaborative polar science in the North American Arctic.

Book Northern Arctic Meteorological Programs electronic Resource

Download or read book Northern Arctic Meteorological Programs electronic Resource written by Victoria Hudec and published by [Downsview, Ont.] : Meteorological Service of Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada's northern region is a vast area covering the land and ocean-based territory that lies above the line of discontinuous permafrost. Environment Canada's definition of Canada's North includes the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, the Hudson Bay Lowlands, northern Quebec and Labrador, and encompasses eight different ecological zones. The area north of the Arctic Circle is defined as Canada's Arctic Region. Within this huge region, the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) provides science-based services and conducts research and development to ensure human safety and well-being, to protect the environment, to foster economic development, and to further our understanding of the northern atmosphere and environment. This document describes MSC northern services and networks such as high Arctic weather observatories, weather forecasts and outreach, and weather observing networks. It also describes research to be done during the Fourth International Polar Year (2007-2008).
