Book Hiking Meteora Monasteries

Download or read book Hiking Meteora Monasteries written by Michael Mitrovic and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of the world-famous meteoric monasteries is hiked on ten routes. Each tour takes about 3 to 4 hours and is attractive at any time of the year. Climbing skills are not required, just good shoes and a little sense of direction. The hikes lead to all six active monasteries, which can be visited, as well as to all other sights such as rock monasteries, monk's prison, dragon's cave or spindle, an extraordinary rock. One tour leads to the neighboring villages beyond the Pinio with a bridge from the Ottoman period and a ruined castro, another to the neighboring valley with a bizarre rock formation and magnificent views. The villages of Kalabaka and Kastraki will also be explored extensively. Geological and historical data as well as overview maps for all tours complete the hiking guide. Supplemental Information: This book may be converted to another format for orders outside the Federal Republic of Germany. There is a possibility that the color photographs published here will be converted into black and white images. As authors and designers of the original edition, we have no influence on this.

Book The Past in the Present

Download or read book The Past in the Present written by Ioannis Poulios and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Past in the Present deals with the complexities in the operation and management of living heritage sites. It presents a new interpretation of such sites based on the concept of continuity, and its evolution to the present. It is demonstrated that the current theoretical framework and practice of conservation, as best epitomised in a values-based approach and the World Heritage concept, is based on discontinuity created between the monuments (considered to belong to the past) and the people of the present, thus seemingly unable to embrace living heritage sites. From this position, the study suggests an innovative approach that views communities and sites as an inseparable entity: a Living Heritage Approach. This approach brings a new insight into key concepts such as authenticity and sustainable development. Through the use of the monastic site of Meteora, Greece, as a case study, the discussion generated aims to shift the focus of conservation from ‘preservation’ towards a continual process of ‘creation’ in an ongoing present, attempting to change the way heritage is perceived, protected and, more importantly, further created. “The Past in the Present is an important and much-needed contribution to the debate about living heritage – and it is particularly significant in the context of the heritage of the past in the modern world. Anyone concerned with how the past is, or should be, integrated within modern lives and identities will need to read this book.” – Leslie Brubaker, Director, Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies, University of Birmingham, UK. “This interesting and thoroughly researched book by Ioannis Poulios is a useful tool in promoting the Living Heritage Approach, and provides a sound theoretical basis for future work. Living Heritage Approach is a paradigm shift that suggests a new way of addressing conservation for our heritage. ICCROM is proud to have introduced this approach, also with the contribution of Ioannis.” – Gamini Wijesuriya, Project Manager, ICCROM.

Download or read book Welcome to the Orthodox Church written by Frederica Mathewes-Green and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the Orthodox Church—its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: readers learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to “venerate” an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It’s the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even readers who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-read, and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

Book The Companion Guide to Mainland Greece

Download or read book The Companion Guide to Mainland Greece written by Brian De Jongh and published by Companion Guides. This book was released on 2000 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Brian de Jongh's two classic Companion Guides, Southern Greece and Mainland Greece, were first published they were greeted with acclaim and immediately established themselves as essential guides. They have now been combined into this single volume, covering the whole of the Greek mainland. This new edition has been thoroughly revised by John Gandon (Brian de Jongh's nephew) and Geoffrey Graham-Bell, taking into account both new archaeological discoveries and recent development. Brian de Jongh combined an expert knowledge of history, archaeology and mythology with a profound understanding of the Greek people and a feeling for the landscape which inspired their myths and monuments: he describes a country that he loved and much of which Pausanias, writing almost two thousand years ago, would still recognise. This book is, more than ever, the most indispensable of all modern guides to Greece.
