This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics of the Supernatural as Illustrated by Descartes Even those modern philosophers who have advocated experience and Observation in Opposition to scholasticism did not get away from it completely. Bacon, who by his experimental method of research had dug up scholastic philosophy by its roots, preserved in the prima philosophia a purely scholastic spirit. Hobbes retained in his materialistic system the scholastic first mover. However, the best illustration of a return to scholasticism after an attempted emancipa tion from it is Descartes. The present study is an inquiry into the grounds for this conservatism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. CHAPTER III CONSERVATION OF TRADITIONS DESPITE PROGRESSIVE IDEAS I / Despite the fact that Descartes had set out on a new path, that of naturalism, his later works, the Discourse,1 the Meditations,2 and the Principles3 surprise us with their reaction. Both in subject-matter and in method he fell back into the error of his predecessors against whom vhe had arisen. He tells us in the Discourse that in "pulling down an / old house, we usually preserve the ruins to contribute to the erection I of the new," but Descartes preserved even more than the ruins--a surprising outcome in view of his preparation for the new structure Vand his first attempt at construction. Having first studied his earliest works where the world and life are represented as going on according to natural laws only, independent of all supernatural powers, and where facts are the criterion of truth, we are surprised to find in his later works that his physics and the very existence of the world are made dependent on the existence of a Perfect Being; that the principle of definition is to take the place of facts in the derivation and verification of truth about the material world, and that the senses, which were the most reliable sources of information in the study of nature, are doubted. He thus returned to authority and tradition discarded j by him at the outset. The Cogito ergo sum, which is so glorified in the histories of philosophy as the most original idea of Descartes, is also nothing but a medieval tradition, and is not the thing for which Descartes is to be given an immortal place in the history of philosophy. We find the same in St. Augustine, who in the state of doubt also takes his own existence as the safest starting-point, Si jailor, sum. The anticipation of...

Book Investigating the Supernatural

Download or read book Investigating the Supernatural written by Sofie Lachapelle and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A convincing account of science’s flirtation with the marginal and the marvelous” from the author of Conjuring Science (Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences). Séances were wildly popular in France between 1850 and 1930, when members of the general public and scholars alike turned to the wondrous as a means of understanding and explaining the world. Sofie Lachapelle explores how five distinct groups attempted to use and legitimize séances: spiritists, who tried to create a new “science” concerned with the spiritual realm and the afterlife; occultists, who hoped to connect ancient revelations with contemporary science; physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists, who developed a pathology of supernatural experiences; psychical researchers, who drew on the unexplained experiences of the public to create a new field of research; and metapsychists, who attempted to develop a new science of yet-to-be understood natural forces. An enlightening and entertaining narrative that includes colorful people like “Allan Kardec”—a pseudonymous former mathematics teacher from Lyon who wrote successful works on the science of the séance and what happened after death—Investigating the Supernatural reveals the rich and vibrant diversity of unorthodox beliefs and practices that existed at the borders of the French scientific culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. “What is science? . . . In her engaging book, Sophie Lachapelle probes for an answer by looking at the liminal realm between science and superstition and the attempt to render the supernatural explicable in naturalistic terms.” —Isis “A welcome addition to the growing literature on spiritism, occultism and physical research in modern France.” —French History

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Supernatural written by W. H. Platt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Supernatural In the summer of the year 1880, George A. Jarvis of Brooklyn, N. Y., moved by his sense of the great good which might thereby accrue to the cause of Christ and to the Church, of which he was an ever grateful member, gave to the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church certain securities exceeding in value eleven thousand dollars for the foundation and maintenance of a Lectureship in said Seminary. Out of love to a former Pastor and enduring friend, the Rt. Rev. Benjamin Henry Paddock, D.D., Bishop of Massachusetts, he named his Foundation "The Bishop Paddock Lectureship." The deed of trust declares that: "The subjects of the Lectures shall be such as appertain to the defence of the religion of Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Holy Bible and illustrated in the Book of Common Prayer against the varying errors of the day, whether materialistic, rationalistic, or professedly religious, and also to its defence and confirmation in respect of such central truths as the Trinity, the Atonement, Justification and the Inspiration of the Word of God and of such central facts as the Church's Divine Order and Sacraments, her historical Reformation and her rights and powers as a pure and National Church. And other subjects may be chosen if unanimously approved by the Board of Appointment as being both timely and also within the true intent of this Lectureship." Under the appointment of the Board created by the Trust, viz., the Dean of the General Theological Seminary and the Bishops respectively of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Long Island, the Rev. W. H. Platt, D.D., LL. D., Rector of St. Paul's Church, Rochester, N. Y., delivered the Lectures for the year 1886, contained in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cognitive science of religion is a rapidly growing field whose practitioners apply insights from advances in cognitive science in order to provide a better understanding of religious impulses, beliefs, and behaviors. In this book Ilkka Pyysiäinen shows how this methodology can profitably be used in the comparative study of beliefs about superhuman agents. He begins by developing a theoretical outline of the basic, modular architecture of the human mind and especially the human capacity to understand agency. He then goes on to discuss examples of supernatural agency in detail, arguing that the human ability to attribute beliefs and desires to others forms the basis of conceptions of supernatural agents and of such social cognition in which supernatural agents are postulated as interested parties in social life. Beliefs about supernatural agency are natural, says Pyysiäinen, in the sense that such concepts are used in an intuitive and automatic fashion. Two dots and a straight line below them automatically trigger the idea of a face, for example. Given that the mind consists of a host of such modular mechanisms, certain kinds of beliefs will always have a selective advantage over others. Abstract theological concepts are usually elaborate versions of such simpler and more contagious folk conceptions. Pyysiäinen uses ethnographical and survey materials as well as doctrinal treatises to show that there are certain recurrent patterns in beliefs about supernatural agents both at the level of folk-religion and of formal theology.
