Download or read book Anti Book written by Nicholas Thoburn and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No, Anti-Book is not a book about books. Not exactly. And yet it is a must for anyone interested in the future of the book. Presenting what he terms “a communism of textual matter,” Nicholas Thoburn explores the encounter between political thought and experimental writing and publishing, shifting the politics of text from an exclusive concern with content and meaning to the media forms and social relations by which text is produced and consumed. Taking a “post-digital” approach in considering a wide array of textual media forms, Thoburn invites us to challenge the commodity form of books—to stop imagining books as transcendent intellectual, moral, and aesthetic goods unsullied by commerce. His critique is, instead, one immersed in the many materialities of text. Anti-Book engages with an array of writing and publishing projects, including Antonin Artaud’s paper gris-gris, Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto, Guy Debord’s sandpaper-bound Mémoires, the collective novelist Wu Ming, and the digital/print hybrid of Mute magazine. Empirically grounded, it is also a major achievement in expressing a political philosophy of writing and publishing, where the materiality of text is interlaced with conceptual production. Each chapter investigates a different form of textual media in concert with a particular concept: the small-press pamphlet as “communist object,” the magazine as “diagrammatic publishing,” political books in the modes of “root” and “rhizome,” the “multiple single” of anonymous authorship, and myth as “unidentified narrative object.” An absorbingly written contribution to contemporary media theory in all its manifestations, Anti-Book will enrich current debates about radical publishing, artists’ books and other new genre and media forms in alternative media, art publishing, media studies, cultural studies, critical theory, and social and political theory.

Book The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Mag n

Download or read book The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Mag n written by Claudio Lomnitz-Adler and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale, never before told, of anarchy, cooperation, and betrayal at the margins of the Mexican revolution. In this long-awaited book, Claudio Lomnitz tells a groundbreaking story about the experiences and ideology of American and Mexican revolutionary collaborators of the Mexican anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón. Drawing on extensive research in Mexico and the United States, Lomnitz explores the rich, complicated, and virtually unknown lives of Flores Magón and his comrades devoted to the “Mexican Cause.” This anthropological history of anarchy, cooperation, and betrayal seeks to capture the experience of dedicated militants who themselves struggled to understand their role and place at the margins of the Mexican Revolution. For them, the revolution was untranslatable, a pure but deaf subversion: La revolución es la revolución—“The Revolution is the Revolution.” For Lomnitz, the experiences of Flores Magón and his comrades reveal the meaning of this phrase. The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón tracks the lives of John Kenneth Turner, Ethel Duffy, Elizabeth Trowbridge, Ricardo Flores Magón, Lázaro Gutiérrez de Lara, and others, to illuminate the reciprocal relationship between personal and collective ideology and action. It is an epic and tragic tale, never before told, about camaraderie and disillusionment in the first transnational grassroots political movement to span the U.S.-Mexican border. The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón will change not only how we think about the Mexican Revolution but also how we understand revolutionary action and passion.

Book Metamorphosis

Download or read book Metamorphosis written by P. K. Page and published by The Porcupine's Quill. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impressive oeuvre of P. K. Page spans genres, formats and art forms, but through it all, the child and the childlike remain integral aspects of imagery and meaning. The verses, plays, fables and essays in Metamorphosis celebrate the child’s unique ability to look, to see, to fashion immense worlds out of the smallest of things; they affirm the importance of fun, nonsense and language play; and they seek to impart spiritual wisdom through rich, complex narratives whose lessons of transcendence and metamorphosis amuse and astonish young readers. In this sixth volume in the Collected Works of P. K. Page, editor Margaret Steffler explores Page’s diverse forays into the fantastical, dreamlike worlds of children’s literature, documenting Page’s ongoing efforts to recover the mysterious and elusive source of childhood. In so doing, she reveals the ways in which Page provides readers of all ages with the ability to throw open the doors between youth and adulthood, and to rediscover the imagination and vision of days gone by.

Book The Metamorphosis

  • Author : Franz Kafka
  • Publisher : Bantam Classics
  • Release : 1972-02-01
  • ISBN : 0553213695
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafka and published by Bantam Classics. This book was released on 1972-02-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.” With this startling, bizarre, yet surprisingly funny first sentence, Kafka begins his masterpiece, The Metamorphosis. It is the story of a young man who, transformed overnight into a giant beetlelike insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. A harrowing—though absurdly comic—meditation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosis has taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction. As W.H. Auden wrote, “Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man.”

Book The Metamorphoses of Apuleius

Download or read book The Metamorphoses of Apuleius written by Judith K. Krabbe and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most notable achievements of ancient prose fiction, the Metamorphoses of Apuleius continues to intrigue readers. This study focuses on Apuleius' best-known work, but takes varied approaches to «metamorphosis, » exploring its use not only as a theme but as a literary technique. It breaks new ground by clearly demonstrating the close relationship between the Metamorphoses of Apuleius and the Metamorphoses of Ovid. It shows, too, the crucial significance of Isis for understanding Apuleius' mode of composition. Juxtaposing Apuleius' Metamorphoses with several works of modern literature, it also examines some of the transformations which the metamorphosis theme itself has undergone.

Book Teaching the Content Areas to English Language Learners in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Teaching the Content Areas to English Language Learners in Secondary Schools written by Luciana C. de Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practitioner-based book provides different approaches for reaching an increasing population in today’s schools - English language learners (ELLs). The recent development and adoption of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (CCSS-ELA/Literacy), the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, the C3 Framework, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) highlight the role that teachers have in developing discipline-specific competencies. This requires new and innovative approaches for teaching the content areas to all students. The book begins with an introduction that contextualizes the chapters in which the editors highlight transdisciplinary theories and approaches that cut across content areas. In addition, the editors include a table that provides a matrix of how strategies and theories map across the chapters. The four sections of the book represent the following content areas: English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. This book offers practical guidance that is grounded in relevant theory and research and offers teachers suggestions on how to use the approaches described.

Download or read book Metamorphosis written by Renaud Egreteau and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a young population of more than 52 million, an ambitious roadmap for political reform, and on the cusp of rapid economic development, since 2010 the world’s attention has been drawn to Myanmar or Burma. But underlying recent political transitions are other wrenching social changes and shocks, a set of transformations less clearly mapped out. Relations between ethnic and religious groups, in the context of Burma’s political model of a state composed of ethnic groups, are a particularly important “unsolved equation”. The editors use the notion of metamorphosis to look at Myanmar today and tomorrow—a term that accommodates linear change, stubborn persistence and the possibility of dramatic transformation. Divided into four sections, on politics, identity and ethnic relations, social change in fields like education and medicine, and the evolutions of religious institutions, the volume takes a broad view, combining an anthropological approach with views from political scientists and historians. This volume is an essential guide to the political and social challenges ahead for Myanmar.
