Download or read book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1 written by J Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 1 is a six-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry. Chapter 1 presents electron microscopy and diffraction studies and their contributions in elucidating the growth and structure of polycrystalline and epitaxially grown films. Chapter 2 describes the techniques of preparation and characterization of metallic films and examines the heats of adsorption, electrical conductivity, surface area, and sticking probabilities of such films. Chapter 3 discusses the strength of pairwise interactions; the influence of the intermetallic bond on the equilibrium shape of metal crystallites; the bonding of individual metal atoms to different crystallographic planes; the interaction of metal atoms and crystallites with non-conducting substrates; and the effects of residual gases on this interaction. Chapters 4 and 5 address the adsorption of metallic films, with an emphasis on general trends in adsorptive and electronic properties of bulk metals. These chapters also discuss the effects of adsorption on the electrical conductance of island-like and coherent films and on the ferromagnetic properties of films. Chapter 6 evaluates the application of infrared spectroscopy to the studies of the surfaces of metal films and the use of the available infrared spectroscopic data in reconciling the results of adsorption studies on oxide-supported metal particles with those obtained with clean evaporated metal films prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions. Research scientists and graduate students who are interested in the fundamentals of adsorption and catalysis will find this volume invaluable.

Download or read book Vibrational Spectroscopy At High External Pressures written by John R. Ferraro and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrational Spectroscopy at High External Pressures: The Diamond Anvil Cell presents the effects of high pressure on the vibrational properties of materials as accomplished in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). The DAC serves the dual purpose of generating the pressures and being transparent to infrared radiation, allowing the observation of changes caused by pressure. The optical probes highlighted will deal principally with infrared and Raman scattering, although some observations in the visible region will also be presented. The book begins with a discussion of the effects of pressure and pressure units. This is followed by separate chapters on the instrumentation needed to study vibrational transitions under pressure and pressure calibration and various methods used to measure pressure in the DAC. Subsequent chapters deal with applications in basic areas of inorganic, coordination, and organic compounds. These include the effects of pressure on spin states and various geometries; pressure effects on organic molecules; applications in geochemistry, conductors, forensic science, and lubricants; and miscellaneous topics such as metallic hydrogen, metallic xenon, and CuCl.

Download or read book Chemistry of the Non Metallic Elements written by E. Sherwin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry of the Non-Metallic Elements is concerned with the non-metals and is to be read in conjunction with The Chemistry of the Metallic Elements by D. M. McC. Steele. The object has not been to provide an encyclopedic coverage of all the chemical reactions of non-metals but rather to select those which will enable the student to appreciate better the similarities and differences between the elements. The book discusses the chemistry of the non-metals in relation to their positions in the periodic groups. It covers the noble gases, hydrogen, the halogens, Group VIB, oxygen, sulfur, Group VB, nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon. Where the groups contain metals, as in Group IVA, their chemistry is briefly discussed to show the properties which occur. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of chemistry at the intermediate level, that is, the sixth-form/first-year university level. Readers are assumed to have a background of O-level chemistry and of O- or A-level physics and a working knowledge of elementary mathematics.

Download or read book Phase Transformations of Elements Under High Pressure written by E. Yu Tonkov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As laboratories replace heavy hydraulic presses and bulky high-pressure chambers with miniature diamond anvils, traditional heaters with laser heating, and continue to improve methods of shock compression, there has been considerable new data obtained from the high-pressure, high-temperature modification of pure elements. The dense metallic modification of elements shows the potential for achieving superconductivity akin to theoretical predictions. Phase Transformations of Elements Under High Pressure contains the latest theoretical and experimental information on nearly 100 elements, including first-and second-phase transitions, melting lines, crystal structures of stable and metastable phases, stability of polymorphic modifications, and other useful properties and data. It emphasizes features such as changes in the liquid state, amorphization, and metallization, and provides temperature-pressure diagrams for every element. The book also describes the transitions of polymeric forms of fullerene, crystal modifications of elements stable under high pressures, and provides data that confirms their superconducting and magnetic properties. This handbook will be a lasting reference for scientists in a broad range of disciplines, including solid-state physics, chemistry, crystallography, mineralogy, and materials science.
