Book Metal Matrix Composites in Industry

Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites in Industry written by Alexander Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal matrix composites are making tangible inroads into the "real" world of engineering. They are used in engineering components such as brake rotors, aircraft parts, combustion engines, and heat sinks for electronic systems. Yet, outside a relatively limited circle of specialists, these materials are mostly unknown. Designers do not as a rule think of using these materials, in part because access to information is difficult as these materials have not really entered engineering handbooks. Metal Matrix Composites in Industry is thus useful to engineers who wish to gain introductory knowledge of these materials and who want to know where "to find" them. Additionally, it provides researchers and academics with a survey of current industrial activity in this area of technology.

Book Engineered Interfaces in Fiber Reinforced Composites

Download or read book Engineered Interfaces in Fiber Reinforced Composites written by Jang-Kyo Kim and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-10-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study and application of composite materials are a truly interdisciplinary endeavour that has been enriched by contributions from chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics and manufacturing engineering. The understanding of the interface (or interphase) in composites is the central point of this interdisciplinary effort. From the early development of composite materials of various nature, the optimization of the interface has been of major importance. While there are many reference books available on composite materials, few of them deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of fiber reinforced composites. Further, many recent advances devoted solely to research in composite interfaces have been scattered in a variety of published literature and have yet to be assembled in a readily accessible form. To this end this book is an attempt to bring together recent developments in the field, both from the materials science and mechanics perspective, in a single convenient volume. The central theme of the book is tailoring the interface properties to optimise the mechanical peformance and structural integrity of composites with enhanced strength/stiffness and fracture toughness (or specific fracture resistance). It deals mainly with interfaces in advanced composites made from high performance fibers, such as glass, carbon, aramid, ultra high modulus polyethylene and some inorganic (e.g. B/W, A12O3, SiC) fibers, and matrix materials encompassing polymers, metals/alloys and ceramics. The book is intended to provide a comprehensive treatment of composite interfaces in such a way that it should be of interest to materials scientists, technologists and practising engineers, as well as graduate students and their supervisors in advanced composites. We hope that this book will also serve as a valuable source of reference to all those involved in the design and research of composite interfaces. The book contains eight chapters of discussions on microstructure-property relationships with underlying fundamental mechanics principles. In Chapter 1, an introduction is given to the nature and definition of interfaces in fiber reinforced composites. Chapter 2 is devoted to the mechanisms of adhesion which are specific to each fiber-matrix system, and the physio-chemical characterization of the interface with regard to the origin of adhesion. The experimental techniques that have been developed to assess the fiber-matrix interface bond quality on a microscopic scale are presented in Chapter 3, along with the techniques of measuring interlaminar/intralaminar strengths and fracture toughness using bulk composite laminates. The applicability and limitations associated with loading geometry and interpretation of test data are compared. Chapter 4 presents comprehensive theoretical analyses based on shear-lag models of the single fiber composite tests, with particular interest being placed on the interface debond process and the nature of the fiber-matrix interfacial bonding. Chapter 5 is devoted to reviewing current techniques of fiber surface treatments which have been devised to improve the bond strength and the fiber-matrix compatibility/stability during the manufacturing processes of composites. The micro-failure mechanisms and their associated theories of fracture toughness of composites are discussed in Chapter 6. The roles of the interface and its effects on the mechanical performance of fiber composites are addressed from several viewpoints. Recent research efforts to augment the transverse and interlaminar fracture toughness by means of controlled interfaces are presented in Chapters 7 and 8.

Book Effect Processing on the Evolution of Interfaces Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Effect Processing on the Evolution of Interfaces Metal Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues in this research focused on the understanding the chemical evolution (diffusional) process at the interface, developing a mechanistic model or an interface based on stress or energy failure criterion, and studying the effect of interface properties on the performance of the composites. The approach involved both experimental and computational components, a link between the evolution of chemistry and geometry of the reaction zone and the interfacial properties. Microstructural studies reveal that reaction growth is due to transformation of both coating and the matrix. Push-out tests conducted on heat treated specimens reveal that the effect of thermal exposure on interfacial properties is predominantly due to exposure temperature. Time of exposure is found to have only a secondary effect. The push out data was used indirectly to evaluate both strength and toughness properties of the interfaces. The local shear strength of Ti-6A14V/SCS-6 interfaces was found to be of the order og 450 Mpa, in comparison with much lower (120 Mpa) average shear strength reported elsewhere. Also a fracture toughness of 50 Mpa m 1/2 was found in this research . Also the fracture toughness values remain more or less constant for normal use temperatures in the range of 450 to 700 deg C.

Book Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites written by Nikhilesh Chawla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, a significant increase in applications of MMCs has taken place, particularly in the areas of automotive, aerospace, electronics, and recreation. These include continuous fiber reinforced MMCs for cables in power transmission, high temperature superconducting wires, particulate MMCs in civilian aircraft and automotive applications, and high volume fraction, high thermal conductivity substrates for electronic packaging. Nevertheless, as with any novel material systems, there is a lack of fundamental understanding on the part of practicing engineers and designers. This book would seek to address these issues, in a thorough and cohesive manner, as well as to provide students and scientists with a basic understanding of MMCs. This book will emphasize the synergistic relationships among processing, structure, and properties of metal matrix composites.

Book Tailored Interfaces for Metal Matrix Composites Fundamental Considerations

Download or read book Tailored Interfaces for Metal Matrix Composites Fundamental Considerations written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to determine the interface properties needed for successful metal matrix composites and to learn how to achieve these properties. A number of factors have been selected for the study. These are thermodynamic stability of the interface, nature of the bonding across the interface, energy and structure of the interface, and role of adsorption at the interface. A number of systems have been chosen to probe these factors; namely, Al/TiC, Al/alpha-Al2O3, A1/MgAl2O4(spinel), Al/Al3(Tix, Zr1-x), Mg/SiC, Mg/MgO, and Mg/Al2O3. Techniques for preparing all of these composites have been worked out, including mechanical alloying followed by extrusion, arc melting, and liquid metal infiltration. MMCs also were obtained from Martin Marietta and Dow. Microstructures of the resulting MMCs are presented and discussed along with preliminary studies of some of the interfaces using transmission electron microscopy. In comparison to Al/SiC, Al/TiC and Mg/SiC show no evidence of chemical reaction at the interface during processing. Al/MgAl2O4(spinel) has superior mechanical properties to Al/alpha-AlO3, both prepared identically. (Author) (tr).

Book Introduction to Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Introduction to Metal Matrix Composites written by Yoshinori Nishida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to deal with fabrication processes of metal matrix composites (MMCs) theoretically, experimentally, systematically, and instructively. The theoretical bases of fabrication processes and recycling processes of MMCs are established in this volume. Most other books in the field are concerned with the mechanics of properties, which is not easy for readers to grasp, and they introduce fabrication processes only as techniques without theoretical discussion. Because this book provides a clear image of the fabrication processes of MMCs without using complicated mathematics, readers can use production theory to create new composites. Also, fundamental concepts of recycling of MMCs are given in this book for the first time so as to meet the demands for solving environmental problems. This work originally was published in Japanese and has attained a high reputation among Japanese professors and researchers in the field.

Book Micromechanics of Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Micromechanics of Interfaces in Metal Matrix Composites written by William W. Gerberich and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of the interfaces in an Al2O3 fiber reinforced beta-2lS titanium have been evaluated by using fiber pushout tests. The Al2O3 fibers were coated with a refractory metal and Y2O3 which served as a diffusion barrier during the HIPing used to produce the metal matrix composites. By doing fiber pushout tests the interfacial fracture was found to occur at the interface between the refractory metal and the H2O3. The interfacial shear strength and interfacial frictional stress were measured to be 323 and 312 + or - 2 MPa, respectively. The interfacial frictional stress, which is due to asperity interlocking during the fiber sliding, was correlated to the surface roughness of the coated Al2O3 fiber obtained with the aid of an atomic force microscope. The measured surface roughness of 18.8 + or - 2.2 nm was related to the frictional stress through Hutchinson's model. The frictional coefficient between the Al2O3 fiber and the Ti matrix calculated to be 0.32 + or - 0.02.
