Divided into three sections with 35 chapters, the book focuses first on proteolysis and antiproteolysis in the lung. Concerns include properties and role of antiproteases; role of leucoproteases in the development of emphysema; and the genetic and clinical considerations of alpha1-antitrypsin deficiencies. The second section focuses on biochemical pharmacology of the lung. Concerns include pulmonary drug-metabolizing enzymes; carrier for oxygen and carbon monoxide in the lung; and metabolism of drugs administered by aerosol. The last section looks at the handling of bioactive substances by the lung. Covered areas include the pharmacokinetic function of the lung; biosynthesis and metabolism of prostaglandins in the lung; and importance and nature of the mechanism of inactivation of prostaglandins in the lung. The book is a vital source of information for readers interested in studying the metabolism of the lung.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Metabolism of Human Diseases

Download or read book Metabolism of Human Diseases written by Eckhard Lammert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Metabolism of Human Diseases” examines the physiology of key organs (e.g. brain, eye, lung, heart, blood vessels, blood, immune system, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, fat tissue, kidney, reproductive system, teeth, bone and joints) and how defective metabolism and signaling pathways within these organs contribute to common human diseases. The latter include depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Down syndrome, macular degeneration, glaucoma, asthma, COPD, pneumonia, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart failure, stroke, varicose veins, Sickle cell disease, hyperlipidemia, fever, sepsis, allergies, peptic ulcer, gastroenteritis, lactose intolerance, colon cancer, diabetes, cirrhosis, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, gout, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, dental caries, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, breast cancer and prostate cancer. The book also describes commonly used drugs and explains their molecular targets. It provides the first comprehensive and detailed summary of the metabolism of individual organs and their physiological and pathological functioning. Thus it serves as a useful supplement to previous textbooks of human physiology. “Metabolism of Human Diseases” is a must-have, state-of-the-art textbook written by International experts for graduate students, postdocs and scientists in metabolic research, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacy as well as for physicians interested in molecular mechanisms underlying common human diseases.

Book Controlled Pulmonary Drug Delivery

Download or read book Controlled Pulmonary Drug Delivery written by Hugh D.C. Smyth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of new research and level of innovation repeatedly introduced into the field of drug delivery to the lung is surprising given its state of maturity since the introduction of the pressurized metered dose inhaler over a half a century ago. It is clear that our understanding of pulmonary drug delivery has now evolved to the point that inhalation aerosols can be controlled both spatially and temporally to optimize their biological effects. These abilities include controlling lung deposition, by adopting formulation strategies or device technologies, and controlling drug uptake and release through sophisticated particle technologies. The large number of contributions to the scientific literature and variety of excellent texts published in recent years is evidence for the continued interest in pulmonary drug delivery research. This reference text endeavors to bring together the fundamental theory and practice of controlled drug delivery to the airways that is unavailable elsewhere. Collating and synthesizing the material in this rapidly evolving field presented a challenge and ultimately a sense of achievement that is hopefully reflected in the content of the volume.

Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Handbook of Physiology

Download or read book Handbook of Physiology written by Alfred P. Fishman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad sweep of this volume is reflected in its discussion of such topics as growth and development of the lungs, pulmonary circulation, pulmonary metabolism, and pulmonary defense mechanisms. The newly recognized correlation between physiological behavior and anatomical structure underlies the first four chapters of the text, which deal with lung development and growth, and lung cell biology. Ultrastructure and biochemistry are the themes of chapters 5-12, which focus on the metabolism of lung cells and the metabolic functions of the lungs. The final five chapters discuss pulmonary defense mechanisms, covering such aspects as airway secretions, macrophages in the respiratory tract, and cilia; and events in the bloodstream such as coagulation, fibrinolysis, and interactions between formed elements of the blood and endothelial lining.
