Book Metabolic Compartmentation and Neurotransmission

Download or read book Metabolic Compartmentation and Neurotransmission written by Soll Berl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first symposium on metabolic compartmentation in brain was held at the Rockefeller Foundation, Bellagio, Italy, July 11-16, 1971; the proceedings CR. Balazs and J. E. Cremer, editors, MacMillan) appeared in 1973. At the conclusion of the first symposium it was decided to assess in 2-3 years the progress in this rapidly developing area. This volume represents the proceedings of an Advanced Study Institute, made possible by a grant from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Scientific Affairs Division. Additional generous support by the Wellcome Trust allowed attendance by participants from non-NATO countries. S. Ber! D. D. Clarke D. Schneider xi Introduction The term metabolic compartmentation, as related to the chemistry of the brain, appeared in print for the first time about 15 years ago. The concept was developed in the laboratory of Dr. Heinrich Waelsch as a result of studies related to the metabolism of glutamic acid and glutamine. It was welcomed by a number of neurochemists who felt that the concept had validity and would help explain metabolic phenomena that were otherwise quite puzzling. The concept gradually achieved general acceptance, and by 1971 the amount of information that could profit by being examined from the point of view of metabolic compartmentation had increased sufficiently to warrant a symposium on the subject ("Metabolic Compartmentation in the Brain," Balazs and Cremer, eds. , MacMillan, 1973). Almost all the participants at that initial symposium were present at the second, on which this volume is based.

Book Compartmentation of Plant Metabolism in Non Photosynthetic Tissues

Download or read book Compartmentation of Plant Metabolism in Non Photosynthetic Tissues written by M. J. Emes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-02-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the most important plant crop products, including oils, starch and protein, are produced in non-photosynthetic tissues such as seeds, roots and tubers. Unlike the situation found in leaves, metabolism in these tissues is not necessarily dominated by plastidial activities, and the provision of energy for biosynthetic processes is therefore different from that in green cells. In this book, leading researchers in the field present a fine overview of the latest thinking on the organisation of metabolism in such organs and the development of the cellular compartments responsible for the synthesis of important crop products. Graduate students as well as researchers in the field of plant biochemistry will find this book of great interest.

Book Biocatalysis for Practitioners

Download or read book Biocatalysis for Practitioners written by Gonzalo de Gonzalo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book originates from the interdisciplinary research cooperation between academia and industry. In three distinct parts, latest results from basic research on stable enzymes are explained and brought into context with possible industrial applications. Downstream processing technology as well as biocatalytic and biotechnological production processes from global players display the enormous potential of biocatalysts. Application of "extreme" reaction conditions (i.e. unconventional, such as high temperature, pressure, and pH value) - biocatalysts are normally used within a well defined process window - leads to novel synthetic effects. Both novel enzyme systems and the synthetic routes in which they can be applied are made accessible to the reader. In addition, the complementary innovative process technology under unconventional conditions is highlighted by latest examples from biotech industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting an analysis of the water relationships of the major groups of organisms: fungi, plants and animals, the text examines water stress at all levels of biological organization. Topics covered include: 1) organic osmotic agents: their distributions, modes of action, and mechanisms of regulation; 2) desiccation stress; mechanisms for preserving cellu lar integrity under conditions of low cellular water activity; 3) water stress and water compartmentation in plants; and 4) freezing stress: the prevention and regulation of ice formation in biological fluids, and mechanisms for overcoming the damaging effects of low temperatures on cellular integrity. Common adaptive strategies in diverse organisms are emphasized, as well as the fundamental physical-chemical properties of aqueous solutions that establish the nature of the interactions among water, low molecular weight solutes and macromolecules.

Book Biochemistry and Structure of Cell Organelles

Download or read book Biochemistry and Structure of Cell Organelles written by Robert A. Reid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS BOOK HAS BEEN WRITTEN BECAUSE WE FEEL THAT THERE IS A NEED FOR AN up-to-date compact book on cell organelles that transmits the excitement and challenge of modern subcellular biology. We hope that the book will be interesting and useful to students of the biological sciences and medicine, and to those in the teaching professions who do not have ready access to research papers. Since space is at a premium, we have denied ourselves the luxury of a philosophical discussion of the problems of defining organelles. Rather we have chosen to include all those intracellular structures which have limiting membranes and definable compartments. The separate chapters consider nuclei, plastids, mitochondria, microbodies, endoplasmic and sarcoplasmic reticulum; Golgi bodies, lysosomes and various secretory vesicles, including chromaffin granules and synaptic vesicles. Nucleoli, ribosomes, and centrioles are included in the chapter on nuclei. New and exciting informatioIi about all these structures has emerged in recent years-for example; the nUcleosome, interrupted genes, signal sequences on proteins destined. for the bioenergetic organelles, mapping and sequencing of organelle genes, and consolidation of chemiosmosis as a unifying principle in energy transduction. We have outlined as many of these developments as possible and pointed out some areas of controversy. The literature on subcellular biology is so extensive that it would have been easier to have written a separate book on each organelle.
