Book Murder Mayhem Pillage and Plunder

Download or read book Murder Mayhem Pillage and Plunder written by Mikhāyil Mishāqa and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's analysis of the internecine strife and fierce clan rivalry rampant in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries puts into perspective the turmoil into which the Lebanon has fallen today. This translation comprises the memoirs of several generations of the Mishāqa family. The author, Mikhāyil Mishāqa (1800-1888), a many-faceted individual, was raised in Dayr al-Qamar, then the princely seat of Mount Lebanon, apprenticed as a merchant in Damietta, Egypt. He served as financial comptroller to the Shihab emirs of Hasbayya and in his later years was a physician and consul to the United States in Damascus. Mishāqa gives a vivid picture of life and history during the period. From his position he was privy to political deliberations and knew intimately the clan chiefs, pashas and princes who were the principal agents of change. The book contains information unavailable elsewhere of importance to political and social historians, on life during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Large portions of the original text that are of particular interest for the study of the interaction of the various ethno-religious groups that inhabit the area, were at one time expunged from the printed Arabic version as too sensitive, but are included in this comprehensive English translation.

  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book David s Secret Demons written by Baruch Halpern and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11-12 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. The Bible portrays King David as an exceptional man and a paragon of godly devotion. But was he? Some scholars deny that he existed at all. Did he? This challenging book examines the written and archaeological evidence critically in an effort to paint an accurate picture of one of the Bible's central figures. Neither defending nor rejecting the traditions about David, Baruch Halpern, a leading scholar of biblical history and the ancient Near East, traces the origins of development of David's persona. Because the biblical text clearly responds to concerns that can only be contemporary with David himself, we can believe that David was both real and a central actor in the historical drama of ancient Israel. Yet at the same time, the written record also shows that contemporaries understood David's character to be much more unsavory trhan the tradition has hitherto allowed. Halpern digs beneath the layers of tradition to understand David as an individual, as a person. The man he uncovers turns out to have been complex, ambiguous, and -- above all -- surprising. According to Halpern, the image of David grew over time. He was the founder of the dynasty that perpetuated the texts about him, and they progressively exaggerated his accomplishments. But in the earliest writings David remains a modest figure, as this book shows for the first time. To understand David as a human being, one must keep in mind that he was primarily a politicians who operated in a rough-and-tumble environment in which competitors were ready literally to slit throats. Halpern's work raises many provocative questions: Was David an Israelite or a Philistine? Was Solomon really David's son? Did David take the throne of Israel by the consent or against the will of the people? How many murders did he commit on his way to the crown? Indeed, was David someone it would have been wise to even invite to dinner? The challenging arguments in David's Secret Demons are sure to provoke all kinds of discussion among biblical scholars and general readers alike. In addition -- a big bonus -- Halpern's accessible, at times humorous prose will itself draw readers everywhere into the compelling story of David found between these covers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arachne's Daughter: A tale of murder, mayhem and madness is a modern day Greek tragedy, with multiple threads weaving a strange, yet familiar pattern. In this spellbinding story, a beautiful young witch named Antigone finds herself constantly vilified by religious bigotry, superstition and ignorance that feed off 17th-century witch paranoia. One day a mysterious parcel arrives. It is a powerful and magical gift from the past, one that keeps cropping up at unexpected moments with strange outcomes. Antigone's story is one of being discriminated against, and of being sexually abused and tortured, but the day comes when Antigone the victim becomes Antigone the ruthless assassin. In her deadly wake, she leaves communities cringing, the authorities baffled, and the mental health system in chaos. Amid the murder, mayhem and madness, Antigone must also battle her own demons of mental illness and a deeply scarred childhood. From Mount Olympus in ancient Greece to Mount Wellington in 20th-century Tasmania, and places in-between, Arachne's Daughter is a journey fraught with madness, danger, death and sacrifice. About the Author: Dannii Lane was one of thirty-five alternate personalities (alters) in a multiple personality system (MPD). Dannii was also a witch. Inspiration for the book came from a love of Greek history and myths, and a background of child abuse and mental illness. When not writing, Dannii worked tirelessly advocating for mental health reform. Sadly, due to spontaneous integration, Dannii did not survive to see her novel published.
