Book excerpt: Sabrina Ito's poetry chapbook, Messages from Salt Water explores how love, betrayal, discovery and acceptance drive and define our relationships with others, as well as with ourselves. Autobiographical in nature, these poems chronicle various stages of Ito's personal life - from her childhood experiences in Japan, to her adult years in Canada and the USA. Displacement, racial identity and unresolved relationships feature as predominant themes, while water symbolism unifies the collection. Simple, yet evocative, Ito's poetic style invokes the natural Japanese landscapes where many of her poems take place. An honest and sincere portrayal of how life-changing moments are often fleeting and indefinable, Messages from Salt Water is narrative poetry at its best - accessible stories told through lyrical language, that readers will want to revisit and re-experience again, and again.

Book excerpt: A Best Book of 2020: Open Letters Review "Andrews’s writing is transportingly voluptuous, conjuring tastes and smells and sounds like her literary godmother, Edna O’Brien . . . What makes her novel sing is its universal themes: how a young woman tries to make sense of her world, and how she grows up." –Penelope Green, The New York Times Book Review This “luminous” (TheObserver) feminist coming-of-age novel captures in sensuous, blistering prose the richness and imperfection of the bond between a daughter and her mother It begins with our bodies . . . Safe together in the violet dark and yet already there are spaces beginning to open between us. From that first immaculate, fluid connection, through the ups and downs of a working-class childhood in northern England, the one constant in Lucy’s life has been her mother: comforting and mysterious, ferociously loving, tirelessly devoted, as much a part of Lucy as her own skin. Her mother's lessons in womanhood shape Lucy’s appreciation for desire, her sense of duty as a caretaker, her hunger for a better, perhaps reckless life. At university in glamorous London, Lucy’s background sets her apart. And then she is finished, graduated, adrift. She escapes to a tiny house in Donegal left empty by her grandfather, a place where her mother once found happiness. There she will take a lover, live inside art and the past, and track back through her memories and her mother’s stories to make sense of her place in the world. In “a stunning new voice in British literary fiction” (The Independent) that lays bare our raw, dark selves, Jessica Andrews’s debut honors the richness and imperfection of the bond between a daughter and her mother. Intricately woven in lyrical vignettes, Saltwater is a novel of becoming-- a woman, an artist-- and of finding a way forward by looking back.

Book Salt Water

Download or read book Salt Water written by Josep Pla and published by Archipelago. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Bush, winner of the Ramon Llull Prize for Literary Translation, brings to English this most prolific and influential of Catalan writers. Dripping with a panache that can turn in a comic instant to the most conciliatory humility, Josep Pla's foray into the land and sea most familiar to him will plunge readers head-first into its mysterious (and often tasty!) depths. Here are adventures and shipwrecks, raspy storytellers and the fishy meals that sustain them. After describing the process of beating an octopus with branches to soften up its flesh, Pla writes, "These are dishes that must be seen as a last resort." Pla inflects the mundane with the hidden rhythms of power sculpting culture, so that a hot supper is never just food--it embodies economic precarity and environmental erosion along with its own peculiar flavor. A lifetime of reporting on current events gave Pla the necessary skills to describe the world in all its gritty, funny, invigorating detail.

Book excerpt: Water management runs in the blood of the Dutch. Draining the Netherlands and keeping it dry is a process they started centuries ago and continue to this day. But will this still suffice? In the project Sweet & Salt (book and exhibition) author and journalist Tracy Metz and curator Maartje van den Heuvel demonstrate, in text and images, how the Netherlands shapes its evolving relationship with water. The sea level is rising, rivers are swelling, there is more rain, there are more storms and sometimes there's a drought. There is a growing awareness that not just dikes and dams but natural processes too play a significant role in our security. This is the greatest challenge currently facing Dutch designers. There is also increasing attention given to the aesthetics of the water landscape being designed.

Book excerpt: An honest look at the messiness of life when you are forced to live the life you didn't imagine. Salt Water and Honey is a story about pregnancy loss and childlessness that doesn't end with a baby. It's told from the messy middle, allowing space for the tension between faith and loss to remain rather than trying to neaten it up with solutions and reasons. Lizzie has experienced the pain of multiple miscarriages and writes honestly about her struggle and fight to find God in her suffering. She is honest about the low points and the pain, but she also shares her journey as she comes to understand that her true identity is not defined by motherhood but by being a child of God. Lizzie's story provides a safe space to remind people that they're not alone, it's okay to grieve and their story matters. Covering many universal truths such as unanswered prayer, grief, disappointment, vulnerability and faith in crisis this book is actually for anyone who has lost their dream and is struggling to understand that their story still has meaning and purpose even when life looks nothing like they hoped it would.

Book Living with Cultivating Messages

Download or read book Living with Cultivating Messages written by Elena Pelzer and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan The Smiling Forehead

Download or read book The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan The Smiling Forehead written by Hazrat Inayat Khan and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By forehead is meant man's expression. The smiling forehead is the pleasant expression; it depends solely upon man's attitude to life. Life is the same for the saint and for Satan, and if men are different it is because of their outlook on life. The same life is turned by the one into heaven and by the other into hell. There are two attitudes: to one all is wrong, to the other all is right. Our life in the world from morning to evening is full of experiences, good and bad, which can be distinguished according to their degree. And the more we study the mystery of good and bad the more we see that there really is no such thing as good and bad. It is because of our attitude and the conditions that things seem good or bad. It is easy for an ordinary person to say what is good or bad, just or unjust – it is very difficult for a wise man. Although everyone, according to his outlook on life, turns things from bad to good and from good to bad, everyone has his own grade of evolution and reasons accordingly. Sometimes one thing is subtler than others and then it is difficult to judge. There was a time when Wagner's music was not understood, and another time when he was considered the greatest of musicians. Sometimes things are good, but our own evolution makes them less good for us. What we considered good a few years ago may not seem good at a later degree of evolution. At one time a child appreciates a doll most, later it will prefer the work of great sculptors. This proves that at every step and degree of evolution man's idea of good and bad changes. Therefore a thinker will understand that there is no such thing as right or wrong. If there is wrong, all is wrong; if there is right, all is right.
