Book excerpt: Since the top-down approaches, such as the extremely ultraviolet (EUV) technique and the high-index fluid-based immersion ArF lithography, may be cover one or two generations, these lithography technologies are getting more severe for the feature size scaling down to sub 10 nm. The directed self-assembly technology of block copolymers is one of the candidates for next generation lithography which can afford feature sizes that are dictated by the molecular weight of the block copolymer and are typically 15 to 30 nm. Directed self-assembly of block copolymers has attracted attention as a technology to extend photoresist-based lithography to smaller dimensions. It has been demonstrated that the directed self assembly of block copolymer offers a new route to perfect nanolithographic pattering at sub-50 nm length scale with molecular scale precision. For application in electronic media, it requires large-area, long-range ordered structures, which is both a kinetic and thermodynamic problem and requires subtle balance of various parameters and processing conditions. So far, block copolymer thin films have already achieved certain success, mainly with higher molecular weights and a feature size of ~30 nm. Book excerpt: The effects of polydispersity, or broad molecular weight distributions, on the phase behavior of block copolymer melts and thin films are systematically explored. Linear AB diblock, ABA triblock, and BAB triblock copolymers are synthesized with continuous polydispersity in the B block (Mw/Mn 8́ơ 1.70́32.0) and relatively monodisperse A blocks (Mw/Mn 8́ơ 1.10́31.3) to understand how the self0́3assembly of polydisperse block copolymers can be altered with chain architecture and block connectivity. Broad dispersity in the M block of poly(styrene0́3b0́3methyl methacrylate) (SM) diblock copolymer melts induces domain dilation and morphological transitions to higher M block volume compositions with respect to predictions for monodisperse SM diblock copolymers. A comparison between poly(styrene0́3b0́31,40́3butadiene0́3b0́3styrene) triblock copolymers (SBS) with mid0́3block (B) polydispersity and poly(methyl methacrylate0́3b0́3styrene0́3b0́3methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers (MSM) with outer0́3block (M) polydispersity reveals that the location of the polydisperse block and how it is connected to the other blocks is critical. Center block polydispersity in SBS, where one block is constrained at two block junctions, leads to a lamellar phase window shift to higher volume fractions of B, increases in domain periodicity, and the stabilization of a new, disordered bicontinuous morphology. The domain periodicity in the MSM triblocks with outer M block polydispersity is at least twice that predicted for monodisperse MSM triblock copolymers. However, in contrast to the SBS triblocks, the polydisperse MSM triblocks exhibit a lamellar phase window shift to lower M block compositions. The behavior of the SBS and MSM triblock copolymers is clarified in the context of the chain architectures present in the melts resulting from the block polydispersity. Preliminary studies of the thin film behavior of the SM diblock and MSM triblock copolymers revealed that despite the polydispersity of the M block, perpendicular microdomain orientation can be achieved. The MSM triblock copolymer thin films exhibit film thickness0́3dependent morphological behavior arising from a confluence of M outer0́3block polydispersity and the presence of a random brush0́3modified substrate. In summation, this dissertation demonstrates that polydispersity can be used to manipulate the phase behavior of block copolymer melts and thin films and may facilitate access to new materials with potentially useful properties.

Book excerpt: The block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly has garnered significant interest due to its ability to generate periodic nanostructures with a variety of morphologies. Compared to diblock copolymers that have been extensively studied to form the conventional morphologies such as spheres, cylinders, and lamellae depending on the block volume fraction, more complex polymer architectures are expected to offer additional degrees of freedom and a wider range of structures. Solvent vapor annealing (SVA) using a continuous gas flow system allows a precise control over the annealing condition, which can capture intermediate morphologies including perforated lamellae and gyroids and can create unique nanostructures that have not been observed in diblock copolymers. Combining with self-consistent field theory (SCFT) modeling and in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) measurement, the phase behavior of advanced polymer architectures can be revealed in details. Here, the self-assembly behavior of silicon-containing triblock copolymer and terpolymers in multi-layered films under SVA is presented. Using both experimental and SCFT approaches, the phase behavior of poly(stryrene-b-dimethylsiloxane-b-styrene) (PS-b-PDMS-b-PS or SDS32) thin films was investigated as a function of the as-cast film thickness and the ratio of two different solvent vapors, toluene and heptane. In comparison with diblock PS-b-PDMS with same molecular weight, the SDS32 offers a simple route to produce a diversity of well-ordered bilayer structures with smaller feature sizes, including the formation of bilayer perforated lamellae over a large process window. In addition, the morphological evolution of core-shell cylinder-forming triblock terpolymers during SVA was monitored in situ using GISAXS. A reversible order-order phase transformation between spheres and cylinders occurred during the annealing process. One of the final morphologies consisted of the regions of in-plane cylinders, with the majority of the film comprising vertical core-shell cylinders passing through perforated lamellae of poly 1,1-dimethyl silacyclobutane (PDMSB).

The topological materials are ubiquitous and range from (i) de novo nanoscale allotropes of carbons in various forms such as nanotubes, nanorings, nanohorns, nanowalls, peapods, graphene, etc. to (ii) metallo-organic frameworks, (iii) helical gold nanotubes, (iv) Möbius conjugated polymers, (v) block co-polymers, (vi) supramolecular assemblies, to (vii) a variety of biological and soft-matter systems, e.g. foams and cellular materials, vesicles of different shapes and genera, biomimetic membranes, and filaments, (viii) topological insulators and topological superconductors, (ix) a variety of Dirac materials including Dirac and Weyl semimetals, as well as (x) knots and network structures. Topological databases and algorithms to model such materials have been also established in this book. In order to understand and properly characterize these important emergent materials, it is necessary to go far beyond the traditional paradigm of microscopic structure-property-function relationships to a paradigm that explicitly incorporates topological aspects from the outset to characterize and/or predict the physical properties and currently untapped functionalities of these advanced materials. Simulation and modeling tools including quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, 3D visualization and tomography are also indispensable. These concepts have found applications in condensed matter physics, materials science and engineering, physical chemistry and biophysics, and the various topics covered in the book have potential applications in connection with novel synthesis techniques, sensing and catalysis.
