Book Positive Mesons Produced by the 184 inch Berekely Cyclotron

Download or read book Positive Mesons Produced by the 184 inch Berekely Cyclotron written by John Burfening and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive mesons produced by 380 Mev alpha-particles in the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron have been detected by means of photographic plates. The experimental arrangement is similar to that used for detecting negative mesons except that the plates are placed in a position to receive positive instead of negative particles from the target. Heavy positive mesons are observed to decay into secondary mesons in the manner described by Lattes, Occhialini and Powell. Relative numbers of positive aid negative me sons coming from a target are found by placing plates symmetrically on opposite sides of the target. Preliminary results indicate that for a 1/16 inch carbon target there are about one fourth as many heavy positive mesons as heavy negative ones for meson energies of 2-3 Mev in the laboratory system.

Book The Production of Mesons by the 184 inch Berkeley Cyclotron Part II Mass Determination

Download or read book The Production of Mesons by the 184 inch Berkeley Cyclotron Part II Mass Determination written by and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass of the mesons produced by the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron has been determined by measuring the bending in the magnetic field and the range in emulsion. The radius of curvature of the trajectory is found by measuring the distance from the target to the point at which the mesons enters the emulsion and the angle which the track makes with the edge of the plate. From the first 50 meson tracks measured they find a mass of 313 ± 16 electron masses. It is highly probable that these mesons are the heavy mesons described by Lattes, Occhialini, and Powell. The mass determination which we have made was done with apparatus intended only for survey work, and some of the error is associated with lack of precision of location of the photographic plates. There was an aluminum foil of thickness 0.001 inches in front of the plates. It is thought that much better accuracy will be possible with better apparatus and a thinner foil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have observed traks which they believe to be due to mesons in photographic plates placed near a ta5rget bombarded by 380 Mev alpha particles. The plates used were Ilford Nuclear Research Plates, type C.2. the identification of the particles responsible for the tracks was first made on the basis of the appearance of the tracks; they show the same type of scattering and variation of grain density with residual range found in cosmic ray meson tracks and about two-thirds of them produce observable stars at the end of their range. For a 10-minute exposure in the cyclotron, about 50 meson tracks are found along the 3-inch edge of a photographic plate. Carbon, beryllium, copper, and uranium have been used so far as target materials, and all are found to give mesons. When a carbon target was bombarded with 300 Mev alpha particles, mesons were found but with reduced yield.

Book The Detection of Light and Heavy Mesotrons Outside the Tank of the 184 inch Cyclotron

Download or read book The Detection of Light and Heavy Mesotrons Outside the Tank of the 184 inch Cyclotron written by and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is of general interest to make the mesons artificially produced in the 184-inch cyclotron available for general experiments outside the tank. Thus far only photographic techniques have been used in conjunction with the Berkeley meson work. By bringing the beam outside the tank it is hoped that cloud chamber, and possibly counter methods, may be used in meson studies. In addition, the measurement of the lifetime of the [pi] meson appears possible if long meson trajectories are obtained. The method discussed here accomplishes the removal of the mesons from the cyclotron tank by allowing the mesons produced in a thin target struck by the 380 Mev alpha particle beam to enter a region of very weak magnetic field which permits them to leave the tank along a path of weak curvature. The technical problem involved here is, therefore, to produce a magnetic shield which reduces the field of the cyclotron from about 14,000 gauss to about 1,000 gauss, and to place this shield within a very short distance of the circulating beam without disturbing the dynamics of the beam itself.
