In 2021 intense solar flares called Solares trigger a series of events that have a profound effect on two hundred killers in a secret experimental prison hidden in the desert. The inmates are abandoned and the project is forgotten for fifty years until ambitious graduate student, Jake Moss, discovers blueprints in the national archives and uncovers the complex. Book excerpt: According to traditional Navajo belief, seizures are the result of sibling incest, sexual witchcraft, or possession by a supernatural spirit—associations that have kept such disorders from being known outside Navajo families. This new study is concerned with discovering why the Navajos have accorded seizures such importance and determining their meaning in the larger context of Navajo culture. The book is based on a 14-year study of some 40 Navajo patients and on an epidemiological survey among the Navajos and among three Pueblo tribes.

Ridvan Askin brings together aesthetics, contemporary North American fiction, Gilles Deleuze, narrative theory and the recent speculative turn to answer this question. Askin argues against the established consensus of narrative theory for an understanding of narrative as fundamentally nonhuman, unconscious and expressive.

Book Renaming the Earth

Download or read book Renaming the Earth written by Ray Gonz‡lez and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his distinctive and spirited way, Ray Gonzalez, the well-known essayist, poet, fiction writer, and anthologist, reflects on the American SouthwestÑwhere he was raised and to which he still feels attached (even though he has lived much of his life elsewhere). It is a place that tugs at him, from its arid desert landscapes to its polyglot citiesÑpart Mexican, part Anglo, part something in-betweenÑalways in the process of redefining themselves. Nowhere does the process of redefinition hit Gonzalez quite as hard as in his native city of El Paso, Texas. There he finds the Òsegregated little town of my childhoodÓ transformed into Òa metropolis of fast Latino zip codes . . . a world where the cell phone, the quick beer, the rented apartment, and the low-paying job say you can be young and happy on the border.Ó Readers will wonder, along with the author, whether life along the Ònew borderÓ is worth Òthe extermination of the old boundaries.Ó But there is another side of the Southwest for this Òson of the desertÓÑthe world of dusty canyons, ponderosa pines, ocotillo, and mesquite. Here, he writes, Òthere is a shadow, and it is called ancient homeÑstructures erased from their seed to grow elsewhere, vultured strings searching for a frame that stands atop history and renames the ground.Ó Rooted in the desert sand and in the banks of the Rio Grande, the muddy river that forms the border between nations, these essays are by turns lyrical, mournful, warm to the ways of the land, and lukewarm to the ways of man.

Book The Anthropology of Alternative Medicine

Download or read book The Anthropology of Alternative Medicine written by Anamaria Iosif Ross and published by Berg. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative medicine is not a fashionable new trend but an established cultural strategy, as well as a dynamic feature of mainstream contemporary medicine, in which elements of folk traditions are often blended with western scientific approaches. The Anthropology of Alternative Medicine is a concise yet wide-ranging exploration of non-biomedical healing. The book addresses a broad range of practices including: substance, energy and information flows (e.g. helminthic therapy); spirit, consciousness and trance (e.g. shamanism); body, movement and the senses (e.g. reiki and aromatherapy); as well as classical medical traditions as complements or alternatives to Western biomedicine (e.g. Ayurveda). Exploring the cultural underpinnings of contemporary healing methods, while assessing current ideas, topics and resources for further study, this book will be invaluable to undergraduate and graduate students in anthropology, sociology, psychology, and health related professions such as nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and biomedicine.

Book Revenge of the Windigo

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Burgess Waldram
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2004-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780802086006
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Revenge of the Windigo written by James Burgess Waldram and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is known about Aboriginal mental health and mental illness, and on what basis is this 'knowing' assumed? This question, while appearing simple, leads to a tangled web of theory, method, and data rife with conceptual problems, shaky assumptions, and inappropriate generalizations. It is also the central question of James Waldram's Revenge of the Windigo. This erudite and highly articulate work is about the knowledge of Aboriginal mental health: who generates it; how it is generated and communicated; and what has been - and continues to be - its implications for Aboriginal peoples. To better understand how this knowledge emerged, James Waldram undertakes an exhaustive examination of three disciplines - anthropology, psychology, and psychiatry - and reveals how together they have constructed a gravely distorted portrait of 'the Aboriginal.' Waldram continues this acute examination under two general themes. The first focuses on how culture as a concept has been theorized and operationalized in the study of Aboriginal mental health. The second seeks to elucidate the contribution that Aboriginal peoples have inadvertently made to theoretical and methodological developments in the three fields under discussion, primarily as subjects for research and sources of data. It is Waldram's assertion that, despite the enormous amount of research undertaken on Aboriginal peoples, researchers have mostly failed to comprehend the meaning of contemporary Aboriginality for mental health and illness, preferring instead the reflection of their own scientific lens as the only means to properly observe, measure, assess, and treat. Using interdisciplinary methods, the author critically assesses the enormous amount of information that has been generated on Aboriginal mental health, deconstructs it, and through this exercise, provides guidance for a new vein of research.
