Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the Jews who came to Mississippi in the early years of statehood? Why did they come? What endowment did they leave as they contributed to the enrichment of Mississippi life? Answers to these and many other questions are given in this collection of vintage photographs and commentaries compiled and written by Rabbi and Mrs. Turitz. Their collection of more than 400 photographs depicting the history of Mississippi Jewry between the 1840s and 1900 is organized geographically, beginning in southwest Mississippi. Here Jewish influence was perhaps strongest in early times. From these communities Jews followed trade routes upriver through Natchez, Vicksburg, and the Delta, and throughout the state. These Jews left a heritage of major business concerns, including nationally known hotels and department stores. Their interest in religion, education, and the arts enriched towns and communities with schools, temples, and opera houses. In the Turitzes' account of Mississippi Jewry there are individual stories about remarkable Jewish families. The lasting influence of these men and women remains indelibly in the towns where they lived and worked.

Download or read book Musing through Towns of Mississippi written by Wynelle Scott Deese and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999-08-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this golden age can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of friends and neighbors only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Mississippi showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available, all organized into six geographical areas. Several family histories and other historical facts add to the richness of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are especially proud to announce the publication of Mississippi: A History, the first textbook ever published specifically for use in college-level courses in Mississippi history. In his sweeping coverage of the Mississippi story--from prehistoric times to the present day-- Dr. Westley F. Busbee, Jr., deftly combines narrative and topical chapters to address major political, economic, social, and cultural developments. Having taught Mississippi history in college classes for more than thirty years, Dr. Busbee approaches this unflinching account by asking why Mississippi--with its rich natural and human resources--continues to compare unfavorably with other states in such critical areas as per capita income, adult literacy, and public health. "How and why," he asks, "did all of us who call Mississippi home get where we are? What past mistakes might we hope to correct and what innovative approaches might we take to enhance the future of the state?" The book seeks answers to these meaningful questions through a careful assimilation of information gleaned from a multitude of secondary and primary sources. It also includes original maps and tables as well as a multitude of photographs, selected sources by chapter, a Selected Bibliography of Mississippi History, a series of appendices, and a full subject index. In sum, this innovative survey provides a great new resource for all instructors of Mississippi history, a common base of information for students pursuing knowledge and meaning in the study of their state's past, and a comprehensive and engaging read for anyone interested in knowing more about the fascinating history of the Magnolia State.

Book Heritage and Hoop Skirts

Download or read book Heritage and Hoop Skirts written by Paul Hardin Kapp and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2023 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize Winner of the 2023 UMW Center for Historic Preservation Book Prize For over eighty years, tourists have flocked to Natchez, Mississippi, seeking the “Old South,” but what they encounter is invention: a pageant and rewrite of history first concocted during the Great Depression. In Heritage and Hoop Skirts: How Natchez Created the Old South, author Paul Hardin Kapp reveals how the women of the Natchez Garden Club saved their city, created one of the first cultural tourism economies in the United States, changed the Mississippi landscape through historic preservation, and fashioned elements of the Lost Cause into an industry. Beginning with the first Natchez Spring Pilgrimage of Antebellum Homes in 1932, such women as Katherine Grafton Miller, Roane Fleming Byrnes, and Edith Wyatt Moore challenged the notion that smokestack industries were key to Natchez’s prosperity. These women developed a narrative of graceful living and aristocratic gentlepeople centered on grand but decaying mansions. In crafting this pageantry, they created a tourism magnet based on the antebellum architecture of Natchez. Through their determination and political guile, they enlisted New Deal programs, such as the WPA Writers’ Project and the Historic American Buildings Survey, to promote their version of the city. Their work did save numerous historic buildings and employed both white and African American workers during the Depression. Still, the transformation of Natchez into a tourist draw came at a racial cost and further marginalized African American Natchezians. By attending to the history of preservation in Natchez, Kapp draws on a rich archive of images, architectural documents, and popular culture to explore how meaning is assigned to place and how meaning evolves over time. In showing how and why the Natchez buildings of the “Old South” were first preserved, commercialized, and transformed into a brand, this volume makes a much-needed contribution to ongoing debates over the meaning attached to cultural patrimony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1831, Richard McLemore received a federal land grant of 2,000 acres located in the future Lauderdale County, Mississippi. He gave free land to those he considered good neighbors and built his home within the one square mile that would be incorporated as Meridian on February 10, 1860. On Valentine's Day 1864, Gen. W.T. Sherman's troops marched into the small railroad town. After burning the town, Sherman wrote in his journal, "Meridian . . . no longer exists." Meridian did survive and became Mississippi's largest city due to its railroad and timber industries and progressive settlers like the Weidmanns, Marks-Rothenbergs, Threefoots, Rushes, Rosenbaums, Rileys, Andersons, and others. Within these pages, meet the people who proved Sherman wrong and continue to influence the area today.
