Book Mercury in Yellow Perch perca Falvescens from Lake St Francis and Nearby Tributaries of the St Lawrence River

Download or read book Mercury in Yellow Perch perca Falvescens from Lake St Francis and Nearby Tributaries of the St Lawrence River written by Émilie C. Larivière and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mercury accumulation in fish is a substantial problem in northern temperate regions. Highly variable levels of mercury have been measured in fish from the St. Lawrence River. Here, I used stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) as tracers of energy source to distinguish food webs of Lake St. Francis (a section of the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall, Ontario) from those of surrounding tributaries and coastal wetlands. I investigated the role of stable isotopes of nitrogen (delta15N) as estimates of trophic position, and I compared mercury accumulation in yellow perch ( Perca flavescens) from Lake St. Francis and the tributaries and coastal wetlands nearby. Since wetlands and tributaries were thought to be the major sites of methylmercury production, I predicted that fish feeding in tributaries would be more contaminated with mercury than fish of the same size or trophic level that are deriving energy from Lake St. Francis. Several components of the food webs of Lake St. Francis and its tributaries and coastal wetlands were sampled for mercury and/or stable isotope analyses (dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and yellow perch). (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Download or read book Mercury Concentrations in Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens from 24 Lakes at Kejimkujik National Park Nova Scotia written by Jennifer A. Carter and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2001 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a wider study on the bioaccumulation & ecological effects of mercury in freshwater fish & wildlife in Canada, this study measured total mercury in yellow perch from 24 lakes in Nova Scotia. The objectives of the study were to assess mercury concentrations in prey of common loons, which themselves have high mercury levels, and to determine which environmental factors were associated with differences in fish mercury concentrations from lake to lake. Results presented include mean perch mercury concentration & concentration range, correlations of fish characteristics with whole-fish mercury concentrations, and correlations of water chemistry parameters with fish mercury concentrations.

Book Factors Influencing Mercury Accumulation in Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens and Aufwuchs in Selected North Central Wisconsin Lakes

Download or read book Factors Influencing Mercury Accumulation in Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens and Aufwuchs in Selected North Central Wisconsin Lakes written by William Gregory Cope and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I studied mercury (Hg) accumulation in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and aufwuchs in 11 lakes with a broad range of pH (5.1 to 7.8) and alkalinity ( -12 to 769 ueq/L) in north-central Wisconsin. Mercury uptake was greatest in perch in lakes with alkalinity less than or equal to 40 ueq/L. Multiple regression models, which included combinations of pH, alkalinity, and total Hg concentration and organic content in surficial profundal sediments as independent variables, accounted for 80 to 90% of the variation of Hg burden and concentration in whole yellow perch. Furthermore, preliminary data suggest that Hg concentrations in whole calendar age 2 yellow perch reflect concentrations of the metal in axial muscle tissue of walleyes in north-central Wisconsin lakes. Aufwuchs from artificial substrates accumulated measurable amounts of Hg during 28-d incubation periods; Hg concentrations varied seasonally and were greatest in fall, lowest in spring, and intermediate in summer. Multiple regression models with combinations of five independent variables (pH, alkalinity, total Hg concentration and organic content in surficial profundal sediment, and total watershed area:lake surface area) accounted for 80 to 90% of the variability in Hg concentration and burden (areal) in aufwuchs. When interpretative problems and costs in the use of procedurally defined aufwuchs are considered, the use of a forage fish such as yellow perch seems to be a more efficient approach to monitoring Hg bioavailability. Furthermore, determination of Hg in small yellow perch is a more direct method of assessing potential Hg contamination of gamefish--a topic with human health implications.

Book Contaminant Concentrations in and Effects on Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens Mitchill and Spottail Shiner Notropis Hudsonius Clinton of the St Lawrence River

Download or read book Contaminant Concentrations in and Effects on Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens Mitchill and Spottail Shiner Notropis Hudsonius Clinton of the St Lawrence River written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuation of a pilot study begun in 1984. In September 1986, 33 stations in the St. Lawrence River and tributaries between Beauharnois and Trois-Rivières were sampled, particularly in Lake St. Pierre. At 19 stations, either spottail shiner or yellowtail perch were analyzed and at 3 stations both were used. The fish were analyzed for bodyburden contents of heavy metals and organochloride contaminants.

This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the framework of the Inland Waters Directorate's, Quebec Region, mandate for the study of toxic chemicals in the St. Lawrence River, young-of-the-year fish have been sampled during September 1986. In the first part of the document the results of the organochlorine and heavy metal residues in young-of-the-year spottail shiner and yellow perch are discussed. The second part discusses the result of the backbone analyses for yellow perch. Backbones were analyzed for collagen and hydroxyproline contents, because these concentrations can be altered through exposure to contaminants. In this study, no differences were found between a reference (clean) and a more polluted station, nor any correlation between pollution and deformities of the back bones (investigated by means of X-rays).
