Download or read book Mentoring Program to Empower African American Female Youth and Young Adults Aging Out of Foster Care written by Chauntelle E. Ratcliff and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to design a program, identify potential funding sources, and write a grant to secure funding for a mentoring program at Global Business Incubation (GBI) to empower African American female youth and young adults aging out of foster care residing in Los Angeles County. An extensive literature review increased knowledge about the negative outcomes of this vulnerable population and provided information on the potential benefits of mentoring programs. A search for potential funding sources online resulted in the selection of the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation as the best funding source for the project. A grant was then written to support a mentoring program held at Loyola Marymount University, whom GBI has partnership. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for successful completion of the project.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to enhance and support a female youth mentoring program for at-risk youth being served by the Child Welfare system. The HerShe Group Foundation is a program, which serves Service Planning Area 6 (SPA 6) of Los Angeles County and implements strategies and interventions to help empower and enhance young adolescent females who are in the foster care system. The purpose is to identify potential funding sources, to complete a grant application to support and expand services to more female foster youth between 13 through 21 years of age. The grant would be used to supplement core-operating expenses and build on the program's capacity to meet the needs of more female youth. The program will provide opportunities to build mentoring relationships between youth and a caring and positive adult figure to strengthen and enhance positive relationship. The program will also strengthen youth outcomes as they transition into adulthood by focusing on higher educational attainment, building meaningful adult-relationships, and expose the youth to life experiences, which will foster life lessons while building leadership skills. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.

Book African American Youths Who Age Out of the Foster Care System Constructing Factors Contributing to Their Enrollment and Progress in Postsecondary Institutions

Download or read book African American Youths Who Age Out of the Foster Care System Constructing Factors Contributing to Their Enrollment and Progress in Postsecondary Institutions written by Tiffany Yvette Lane and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the literature has examined the postsecondary educational status and experiences of youths who age out of foster care, there has been minimal exploration of the status and experiences of those who are African American. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of African Americans who aged out of the foster care system, and to describe the factors contributing to their decision to attend school and the strategies they used towards progression in school. The goal of the study was to gain an understanding of African American youths who aged out of care from a cultural viewpoint. Data were collected through in-depth interviews of 10 participants. The findings showed that participants wanted to attend a postsecondary institution to achieve academic success with the certainty that it would lead to broader successes in life. The desire to be successful was motivated by their past misfortunes before and during their time in foster care; experiencing these misfortunes influenced their desire to improve their circumstances through further education. The participants were also inspired by social and community supports that assisted them in matriculating in school. The strategies they employed were inspired by the lack of constant supports and the availability of resources upon aging out of care. The implications of these findings are important to social work practice on the micro and macro levels. On the micro level, they support an informative strengths-based practice with an empowerment emphasis, which involves culturally sensitive practices that are vital for providing services to African Americans aging out of foster care. Forming supportive networks among these African American youths is also essential for their success. On the macro level, consideration of culturally sensitive programs and practices defined in child welfare polices related to youths aging out of foster care is imperative for effective practice and successful outcomes. Social workers need to advocate with consideration of the unique societal challenges facing African Americans aging out of foster care. -- Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of critical mentoring, presenting its theoretical and empirical foundations, and providing telling examples of what it looks like in practice, and what it can achieve. At this juncture when the demographics of our schools and colleges are rapidly changing, critical mentoring provides mentors with a new and essential transformational practice that challenges deficit-based notions of protégés, questions their forced adaptation to dominant ideology, counters the marginalization and minoritization of young people of color, and endows them with voice, power and choice to achieve in society while validating their culture and values.Critical mentoring places youth at the center of the process, challenging norms of adult and institutional authority and notions of saviorism to create collaborative partnerships with youth and communities that recognize there are multiple sources of expertise and knowledge. Torie Weiston-Serdan outlines the underlying foundations of critical race theory, cultural competence and intersectionality, describes how collaborative mentoring works in practice in terms of dispositions and structures, and addresses the implications of rethinking about the purposes and delivery of mentoring services, both for mentors themselves and the organizations for which they work. Each chapter ends with a set of salient questions to ask and key actions to take. These are meant to move the reader from thought to action and provide a basis for discussion. This book offers strategies that are immediately applicable and will create a process that is participatory, emancipatory and transformative.

Book Empowerment of Youth in Foster Care

Download or read book Empowerment of Youth in Foster Care written by Ewa U. Lavin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outcome research has shown that upon aging out of the foster care system, many young adults struggle during their transition to independence. Youth who age out are less likely than their peers in the general population to achieve academic success, including high school graduation and post-secondary education. These youth are more likely to be unemployed or work at jobs that do not provide them with financial security. They are more likely than their peers to experience violence, victimization, homelessness or unstable housing, mental illness, and other poor health outcomes. They are also at an increased risk for incarceration, substance abuse, and early parenthood; and they are more likely to lose their children to the foster care system. The current study seeks to examine experiences foster care alumni identify as empowering and promoting resilience. By identifying elements that contributed to building self-sufficiency and positive outcomes, this research attempts to inform practitioners, policy makers, and other stakeholders as they attempt to move towards best practices of effective service delivery. Data were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with four foster care alumni who were in care in New Jersey. Transcribed interview data was analyzed utilizing McCracken's "grounded theory" as a guide. Data was reduced to smaller units for identification of common, interrelated themes. These themes and patterns were subjected to a process of analysis in an attempt to inform conclusions. Participants credit their positive outcomes, post transition, to several factors, which include the impact of relationships and mentoring, as well as other intrinsic and environmental factors. Study participants offered several recommendations for policy and program reform. The relationship of findings to literature, limitations and implications of the current study for practice and research are discussed.

Book African American Women and Mentorship

Download or read book African American Women and Mentorship written by Donna Gibson McCrary and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have seen marked improvements in all aspects of their lives in the past fifty years. Laws have permitted and supported discriminatory practices and procedures against African Americans in every aspect of their lives. They have always had to prove their worth just to be recognized or considered for a position, to accomplish goals that others were automatically afforded. It was not uncommon for African Americans to experience major setbacks based solely on the color of their skin. African American women have been at a greater disadvantage due to being African American and female; a double minority, if you will. Educational and employment opportunities were limited and when they were made available, those with experience made little effort to mentor African Americans to ensure their success. History has proven race and gender impacts leadership skills and potential as well as upward mobility in the workplace. Meeting the basic requirements for higher education, an internship, or employment is only one component necessary for success. Mentoring is a major factor in the success of individuals and without successful mentoring, many African Americans face adversity, isolation, and unnecessary hardships.Mentoring in the African American community has been a source of comfort for many years. The familial unit has served as a sounding board, a source of support and a safe place to disclose one's innermost feelings encompassing mental, spiritual and career struggles. Mentoring in all aspects of life is beneficial to the success of the individual, whether in education, one's social life, or employment. With individuals that are committed to the mentoring process, both parties will find mentoring beneficial and rewarding. It is essential for African Americans to reach back and lift up a protégé while simultaneously climbing the ladder of success. The issue is addressed to academics and schoolteachers as well as researchers in the field of physics education.
