Book Religion and Architecture in Premodern Indonesia

Download or read book Religion and Architecture in Premodern Indonesia written by G. Domenig and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his richly illustrated Religion and Architecture in Premodern Indonesia Gaudenz Domenig investigates the nature of Indonesian ethnic religions by focusing on land opening rituals, sacred groves, and architectural responses to the custom of presenting offerings. Since deities and spirits were supposed to taste offerings on the spot, it was a task of architecture to attract them and to guide them into houses where offerings were presented. Domenig quotes numerous sources to show that certain material elements of the house were viewed as spirit attractors, spirit ladders or spirit pathways. Various ‘exotic’ features of Indonesian vernacular architecture thus become understandable as relics from times when architecture was still responding to indigenous religions practised in the archipelago.

Book Primates Face to Face

Download or read book Primates Face to Face written by Agustín Fuentes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our closest evolutionary relatives, nonhuman primates are integral elements in our mythologies, diets and scientific paradigms, yet most species now face an uncertain future through exploitation for the pet and bushmeat trades as well as progressive habitat loss. New information about disease transmission, dietary and economic linkage, and the continuing international focus on conservation and primate research have created a surge of interest in primates, and focus on the diverse interaction of human and nonhuman primates has become an important component in primatological and ethnographic studies. By examining the diverse and fascinating range of relationships between humans and other primates, and how this plays a critical role in conservation practice and programs, Primates Face to Face disseminates the information gained from the anthropological study of nonhuman primates to the wider academic and non-academic world.

Interdisciplinary and using diverse research approaches, the book includes contributions by authors from a variety of disciplines across disaster research, sociology, urban planning, architecture, anthropology, earth science, and education. Mixed methods are adopted to carry out the research projects that ground this volume, including qualitative research for social scientific research, ethnographic methods and more importantly, Participatory Action Research (PAR) is also included by authors who have a background in design professions and a few indigenous scholars who are themselves survivors of disasters. The chapters are structured in the following five thematic sections: 1. Learning as place-making in displacement 2. Gender and place-making in response to displacement 3. Community resilience in keeping indigenous sense of place 4. Community (Re)building in displacement 5. Transnational Place-making: Talk to the Actor. Understanding how affected communities are recovering from their own perspectives, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of area studies, political science, disaster planning and human geography.

Book Primate Ecology and Conservation Volume 2

Download or read book Primate Ecology and Conservation Volume 2 written by International Primatological Society. Congress and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1986-08-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The survival of primates in their natural habitats is of growing concern to primatologists, ecologists and conservationists. In this volume, research on feeding behaviour, nutrition and digestive physiology from captive and wild primates is presented. Correlates of the habitat and social organisation are discussed, and then integrated with the pressing problem of how to conserve primates. Broad issues of confrontation between human and non-human primate populations are considered in the light of conflicting priorities for land-use and development. The increased knowledge of what primates require for their survival is applied to problems of captive propagation as a means of reducing dependence on exploiting wild populations. The papers presented in this volume will stimulate discussion between ecologists, conservationists and those concerned with land-use management to establish realistic policies for primate conservation.
