Book The Physiology of Psychological Disorders

Download or read book The Physiology of Psychological Disorders written by James G. Hollandsworth Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explanations of abnormal behavior that emphasize the importance of physiological determinants of disorder are relatively unpopular among psychologists, especially among those who work as clinicians in an ap~ plied setting. The reasons for this are theoretical and historical, as well as practical. Physiology and its associated biological disciplines of bio~ chemistry, pharmacology, and genetics are traditionally more associated with medicine; their use to underpin explanations and treatments of behavioral abnormality has consequently demanded knowledge to which most psychologists are not exposed and skills that are unavailable to them. The dichotomy thus created between medical and psychologi~ cal approaches has caused many psychologists to disregard physiologi~ cal factors. Even when the latter are recognized as important, many psychologists have been unwilling to admit to the fact, in the belief that by doing so they will commit themselves to an overly medical model of psychological disorder, undermining what they see as preferred views of abnormality. As I have become increasingly aware in following the progress of this book, in the United States the theoretical issues in this debate have been further sharpened by professional rivalries (present but less explicit on the European scene from which I write) between medical and nonmedical health care workers, regarding facilities for and approaches to the treatment of the mentally disturbed. Faced with these divisions of interest, psychologists have available two courses of action.

Book Mental Hygiene

Download or read book Mental Hygiene written by Herbert Allen Carroll and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of the experience of several years of teaching mental hygiene and of clinical work with college students. It is an elementary text, written with the needs and backgrounds of two groups of students constantly in mind: those who are beginning their work as majors in psychology; those who are not majoring in psychology but are interested in achieving some insights into the dynamics of adjustment which will be of value to them personally and professionally. Since these groups have had little or no training in psychology, an overview of a number of areas is essential to their comprehension of the mental hygiene point of view. For this reason the writer has included general introductory material on such topics as motivation, individual differences, learning, and psychometrics. The psychoses have been treated briefly in order that the student may have a point of reference to aid him in understanding the relationship between normal and abnormal behavior.

Book Managing the Psychological Impact of Medical Trauma

Download or read book Managing the Psychological Impact of Medical Trauma written by Michelle Flaum Hall, EdD, LPCC-S and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What to do when treatment becomes trauma Of increasing concern to all health professionals is the mental and emotional trauma that can result from adverse medical experiences ranging from life-threatening events to even routine medical procedures. This groundbreaking book is the first to conceptualize the psychological aspects of medical trauma and provide mental health and health care professionals with models they can use to intervene when treatment becomes trauma. The book delivers systems-level strategies for supporting patients and their families who experience distress in the medical setting or as a result of life-threatening or life-altering diagnoses and procedures. Reflecting the growing trend toward interprofessional practice and training in health care and initiatives toward patient-centered care, the book also describes models that promote the seamless integration of mental health professionals into the health care team. The book reflects the PPACA mandate to integrate mental health services into health care in order to both ensure the psychological and emotional well-being of patients and to provide support and guidance to health care professionals. Using an inclusive model of medical trauma, the book examines the effects and complexity of the trauma experience within the medical setting; addresses patient, medical staff, and procedural risk factors regarding specific level 1, 2, and 3 traumas; discusses the effects of environment and medical staff interactions; and covers intervention and prevention. The book also highlights examples of health care systems and organizations that have successfully applied innovative ideas for treating the whole person. Extensive case studies addressing the three levels of medical trauma illustrate its effects and how they could have been better managed. Key Features: Addresses psychological trauma resulting from adverse medical experiences—the first book to do so Provides effective models for addressing trauma in health care based on maternal health protocols from NCSWH Includes effective new models, protocols, and best practices for all mental health and health care professionals Presents extensive case examples of levels 1, 2, and three medical trauma Disseminates valuable resources and screening and measurement tools

Book Psychology and Mental Health

Download or read book Psychology and Mental Health written by James Arthur Hadfield and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1950, Psychology and Mental Health describes the origin of behaviour disorders and the psychoneuroses especially as regards their causes in early childhood. Most psychologists agree that such disorders as hysteria, sex perversion, the obsessions and anxiety states, as well as many behaviour disorders and delinquencies, find their roots in childhood experiences. If this is the case it should be possible to prevent them from developing into full-blown neurotic disorders which may take years to cure. The purpose of this book is to describe the early causes of these disorders with a view to their treatment, but more particularly with a view to their prevention. As mental health is the concern not only of the doctor but of the parson and the priest, of the teacher and the parent, this book is written in non-technical language as far as the demands of accuracy will allow. It embodies the result of over thirty years’ experience in the treatment of patients suffering from these disorders, and the views here maintained, which differ somewhat from the other analytic schools, are illustrated with clinical examples throughout. This book is a reissue originally published in 1950. The language used reflects its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this republication.
