Book excerpt: Having an understanding of mental health literacy in rural based adolescents is essential for creating change in levels of knowledge, beliefs about mental health, and help-seeking behaviors. The Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) is a self-report measure of mental health literacy. This study used the MHLS to measure mental health literacy in rural students ages 14-17 and in Grades 9–12. Results from this study can help researchers understand the relationships between mental health literacy, age, gender, and stigma. A sample of 120 participants was used for this study. Participants' guardians were asked to complete a consent form, and participants completed the mental health literacy scale survey. Four research questions were evaluated in this study using both the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney test. Descriptive statistics were also run to evaluate important data relevant to this study. Four research questions were analyzed for this study, and four hypotheses were considered. After data collection and data analysis, it was found that only one hypothesis was supported.

Book Mental Health Literacy of Adolescents in Urban Ethiopia and the Effectiveness of Mental Health Curriculum Intervention Using Social Media

Download or read book Mental Health Literacy of Adolescents in Urban Ethiopia and the Effectiveness of Mental Health Curriculum Intervention Using Social Media written by Hassen Hailemariam Mamo and published by Independent Author. This book was released on 2023-03-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health is among the primary public health priorities interlinking with physical health and well-being; as the saying goes, "there is no health without mental health." Nowadays, the burden of mental health problems and disproportional suffering among the adolescent population is increasing compared to other age groups for multiple reasons. Mental health literacy, defined as knowledge, beliefs, and awareness of mental health issues, is a notable modifiable factor linking to immediate and intermediate mental health outcomes. Understanding adolescents' mental health issues and these modifiable determinants are essential to maintaining a healthy mental state and improving well-being and quality of life. However, evidence about adolescents' mental health, mental health literacy, and the socio-demographic effects were inadequate in low-income countries, Ethiopia included. Schooling systems as ideal places and mental health curriculum as organized content has gotten attention in promoting children and adolescents' mental health. However, resource limitations and structural inequalities necessitate an effective and sustained mode and medium of delivery. In this regard, digital devices, apps, and internet platforms have become imperative more than ever integrated with adolescents' daily life providing golden opportunities. According to qualitative evidence, online health interventions have reportedly overcome logistical and physical challenges. Social media, for example, provides these opportunities and has evolved into an appealing platform for exchanging health information. However, affordability inequality creates the digital divide and digital differentiation related to devices and/or internet access, digital/internet literacy, and skills. Likewise, content selection and scanty evidence about the quantitative.

Book Adolescent Health Literacy and Learning

Download or read book Adolescent Health Literacy and Learning written by Deborah Begoray and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent Health Literacy and Learning offers insights to all those who care about promoting and assisting adolescent health development: health education teachers, health practitioners, and youth care workers. Adolescent health is of worldwide concern, especially as we learn that health habits and attitudes established in adolescence continue into adulthood. For example, chronic diseases such as diabetes that began in mid to late adulthood are becoming more prevalent in younger ages. Academics, clinicians and teachers are searching for ways to raise the health literacy and health outcomes of adolescents to better prepare them for the future. There is a need to raise the profile of adolescent health literacy and learning in order to address issues in adolescent and adult health. This edited volume features expert Canadian health literacy scholars writing on topics such as digital technology, software applications to health promotion, advertising, gender, suicide, nutrition, fitness, and mental health specifically for adolescents. It contains theoretical and practical ideas as well as resources for practitioners and educators to assist adolescents with interacting more critically with health information. The hope is that this book will help young people grow into adults who are more health literate. All contributing authors are experts in adolescent health literacy. Many take a uniquely Canadian perspective as well. They all acknowledge the impact of a variety of individuals and groups on adolescents, but also encourage the development of an adolescent's sense of individual identity, critical thinking, social responsibility and even activism as part of their health literacy.

Book Mental Health Literacy

Download or read book Mental Health Literacy written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders affecting adolescents, and there is evidence suggesting that there are adolescents suffering from depression who are not receiving treatment (Mojtabai, Offson, & Han, 2016). The increasing presence of mental health professionals and mental health services in public schools is one solution to the treatment gap. However, less is known about adolescents' understanding of depression and treatment options. The current study utilized an online survey to examine the mental health literacy of 38 ninth grade students. Results indicated that adolescents have a moderate ability to recognize and label depression from brief case vignettes, and differentiate depressed and non-depressed scenarios. Additionally, adolescents were more likely to suggest an informal or non-professional source of help to a depressed peer. Finally, adolescents demonstrated poor knowledge of some school-based mental health professionals, specifically school nurses, school psychologists, and school social workers. Conclusions from this study may aid in improving mental health awareness education in public schools and demonstrate the need for increased visibility of school-based mental health professionals.
