Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most complete book to date concerning the institutionalized care of the mentally ill elderly. A compassionate, comprehensive portrayal of the problems of caring for older persons by family members and nursing home staff. Essential reading for all those working with the elderly." --Bertram J. Cohler, Committee on Human Development, University of Chicago "The real strength of this book lies in its initial conceptualization of the nursing home as a community with a community's complexity of forces working both for and counter to the best interests of its members...contrasting the traditional view that the institution is the enemy of its residents." --M. Powell Lawton, Director of Research, Philadelphia Geriatric Center "This eminently readable book meets a long-standing need in the field of mental health, reflected in the fact that many nursing home residents suffer mental and emotional problems not infrequently the cause of their placement. Rooted solidly in theory, research, and clinical evidence, yet with a clear eye to practical applications, this excellent book will appeal to scholars, educators, students, administers, consultants, and practitioners." --Barbara Silverstone, Executive Director, The Lighthouse "This book come out at the right time in our return to a national discussion of the mental health needs of older adults. Scholarly in breadth and thoroughness, the authors draw on their wealth of practical experience to edify topics on the nursing home industry and its community of caregivers, families, and residents, and on strategies for mental health consultation, assessment, and intervention. It is thoughtfully written." --Carrell Wendland, Ph.D., President Beverly Foundation

Book Manual of Nursing Home Practice for Psychiatrists

Download or read book Manual of Nursing Home Practice for Psychiatrists written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shifting demographic toward a "graying" population -- coupled with today's reality of managed care -- makes the need for high-quality, cost-effective psychiatric services within the nursing care setting more urgent than ever. As we increase the number of our years, it is also imperative that we enhance the quality of those years. The product of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA's) Council on Aging and its Committee on Long-Term Care and of the Elderly, the Manual of Nursing Home Practice for Psychiatrists stands out because it focuses on the "how" -- not the "why" -- of nursing home care. Of exceptional importance is its detailed discussion of the Minimum Data Set (MDS), a structured assessment required by both Medicare and Medicaid for all residents of skilled nursing facilities. Divided into six sections, this "how to" volume contains practical information readers can use right away, from getting reimbursed by insurance companies to handling nursing facility politics: * Clinical -- History; evaluation and management of psychiatric problems in long-term care patients; an overview of the MDS; sexuality within the nursing home care setting* Regulatory -- Introduction to the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 (part of OBRA-87) and its implications for psychiatric care; details about the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), which includes the MDS, the Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs), and Utilization Guides specified in the State Operations Manual (SOP)* Financial -- Documentation, reimbursement, and coding; what to look for when contracting with nursing homes* Legal and ethical -- The dehumanizing effect of diagnostic labels and the ethical issues inherent in regulating daily schedules (e.g., bed, meal, and bath times); nursing home placement; competence and decision-making ability; comfort care for end-stage dementia; coping with Alzheimer's disease; and the role of caregivers* Summary and Future Perspectives -- A detailed vision about how psychiatrists can improve the diagnosis and treatment of nursing home patients* Appendixes and bibliography -- Staffing recommendations and assessment instruments Edited by a distinguished authority and former chair of the APA's Committee on Long-Term Care and Treatment of the Elderly, this comprehensive volume will appeal to a wide audience of professionals: from general psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists, to primary care physicians and residents.

Book Senior Mental Health Assessment

Download or read book Senior Mental Health Assessment written by Robert Garrett Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional mental health care settings are inadequate to meet the needs of older adults. Mental health specialists must adapt their expectations and approach to be effective in alternative venues and to diversity their portfolio of practice sites to ensure financial viability. These sites include acute care hospitals, extended care facilities, senior citizen centers, retirement communities, and certified home health agencies. The opportunity to involve a patient=s family is challenged by a patient=s financial barriers, diagnosis, mental status, and the culture of the medical community. A summary of research is presented regarding mental health consultation with older adults involving a health team approach and the family in two settings: acute care hospitals and extended care facilities. Recommendations are offered based on this research to improve the efficacy and efficiency of the mental health consultant (therapist/liaison).
