Book The Effects of Physical Fatigue on Mental Efficiency Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Effects of Physical Fatigue on Mental Efficiency Classic Reprint written by Floyd Carlton Dockeray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effects of Physical Fatigue on Mental Efficiency Mosso (30) seems to be the first to call attention to the possible relation Of physical and mental fatigue. He found with the ergograph which he invented that after voluntary contraction Of the finger was no longer possible the finger could still be made to lift the weight if an electric stimulus was applied to the flexor muscle. If the subject was mentally fatigued by lecturing, or by a two-hour examination, the amount Of voluntary work he could do on the ergograph was decreased, and the muscle failed to respond to the same ex tent to the electric stimulus that it did before mental fatigue. It would appear, therefore, that mental fatigue had a direct influence upon the voluntary muscles. However, not all Of mosso's subjects were in complete agreement. Under normal conditions part Of the subjects produced convex curves and part concave curves. Only those with concave curves showed reduced muscular ability immediately after mental work. Those with convex curves showed an increase immediately after the mental work, followed an hour later by a decrease. Book excerpt: This is probably the most intensive study of mental fatigue that has ever been made. After a splendid historical survey of the subject, the author recounts the results of experiments to determine the change in mental efficiency produced by various types of mental work. Among these was a careful study of the effects produced by the mental multiplication of four place by four place numbers continued for 12 hours without interruption. There was a gradual increase in the average time required for each multiplication, until at the close of the 12 hours the average time was almost double that at the beginning. The feeling of fatigue was only slightly correlated with the decrease in mental efficiency. -Journal of Educational Psychology [1913]

Book excerpt: The mind can only be conquered by regular meditation, by deciding beforehand what direction its activity ought to take, and insisting that its activity takes that direction; also by never leaving it idle, undirected, masterless, to play at random like a child in the streets after dark. This is extremely difficult, but it can be done, and it is marvellously well worth doing. The fault of the epoch is the absence of meditativeness. A sagacious man will strive to correct in himself the faults of his epoch. In some deep ways the twelfth century had advantages over the twentieth. It practised meditation. The twentieth does Sandow exercises. Meditation (I speak only for myself) is the least dispensable of the day's doings. What do I force my mind to meditate upon? Upon various things, but chiefly upon one.

Book MENTAL EFFICIENCY AND OTHER HINTS TO MEN AND WOMEN

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there is any virtue in advertisements—and a journalist should be the last person to say that there is not—the American nation is rapidly reaching a state of physical efficiency of which the world has probably not seen the like since Sparta. In all the American newspapers and all the American monthlies are innumerable illustrated announcements of "physical-culture specialists," who guarantee to make all the organs of the body perform their duties with the mighty precision of a 60 h.p. motor-car that never breaks down. I saw a book the other day written by one of these specialists, to show how perfect health could be attained by devoting a quarter of an hour a day to certain exercises. The advertisements multiply and increase in size. They cost a great deal of money. Therefore they must bring in a great deal of business. Therefore vast numbers of people must be worried about the non-efficiency of their bodies, and on the way to achieve efficiency. In our more modest British fashion, we have the same phenomenon in England. And it is growing. Our muscles are growing also. Surprise a man in his bedroom of a morning, and you will find him lying on his back on the floor, or standing on his head, or whirling clubs, in pursuit of physical efficiency. I remember that once I "went in" for physical efficiency myself. I, too, lay on the floor, my delicate epidermis separated from the carpet by only the thinnest of garments, and I contorted myself according to the fifteen diagrams of a large chart (believed to be the magna charta of physical efficiency) daily after shaving. In three weeks my collars would not meet round my prize-fighter's neck; my hosier reaped immense profits, and I came to the conclusion that I had carried physical efficiency quite far enough......

Book The Psychology of Fatigue

Download or read book The Psychology of Fatigue written by Robert Hockey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue can have a major impact on an individual's performance and well-being, yet is poorly understood, even within the scientific community. There is no developed theory of its origins or functions, and different types of fatigue (mental, physical, sleepiness) are routinely confused. The widespread interpretation of fatigue as a negative consequence of work may be true only for externally imposed goals; meaningful or self-initiated work is rarely tiring and often invigorating. In the first book dedicated to the systematic treatment of fatigue for over sixty years, Robert Hockey examines its many aspects - social history, neuroscience, energetics, exercise physiology, sleep and clinical implications - and develops a new motivational control theory, in which fatigue is treated as an emotion having a fundamental adaptive role in the management of goals. He then uses this new perspective to explore the role of fatigue in relation to individual motivation, working life and well-being.
