Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Menkiti’s Moral Man, Oritsegbubemi Anthony Oyowe offers an original interpretation of Ifeanyi Menkiti’s conception of person, one that has significant implications for his metaphysics and moral philosophy. Menkiti holds that one is not born a person but becomes a person in a linguistic and cultural community, denies that the mere possession of intrinsic properties makes one a person, and maintains that personhood is defined by the community. This last process consists in the community socially recognizing as person one who has been incorporated into society and has successfully carried out a range of obligations linked to social roles and positions. On the one hand, Oyowe clarifies the role of intrinsic properties in Menkiti's account by arguing that for Menkiti, moral agency and personhood do not coincide. One is a moral agent but not a person in virtue of being rational, free, and endowed with a moral personality. On the other hand, he clarifies the sense in which the community makes one a person by drawing on principles of social ontology to explain how by adopting certain attitudes and practices a community constitutes its members as persons. This interpretation has the potential to illuminate a range of problems raised in response to Menkiti’s conception of person.

Book Menkiti on Community and Becoming a Person

Download or read book Menkiti on Community and Becoming a Person written by Edwin Etieyibo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ifeanyi Menkiti’s articulation of an African conception of personhood—especially in “Person and Community in African Traditional Thought” —has become very influential in African philosophy. Menkiti on Community and Becoming a Person contributes to the debate in African philosophy on personhood by engaging with various aspects of Menkiti’s account of person and community. The contributors examine this account in relation to themes such as individualism, communalism, rights, individual liberty, moral agency, communal ethics, education, state and nation building, elderhood and ancestorhood. Through these themes, this book, edited by Edwin Etieyibo and Polycarp Ikuenobe, shows that Menkiti’s account of personhood in the context of community is both fundamental and foundational to epistemological, metaphysical, logical, ethical, legal, social and political issues in African thought systems.

Book African Personhood and Applied Ethics

Download or read book African Personhood and Applied Ethics written by Molefe, Motsamai and published by NISC (Pty) Ltd. This book was released on 2020-02-16 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the salient idea of personhood in the tradition of African philosophy has been objected to on various grounds. Two such objections stand out – the book deals with a lot more. The first criticism is that the idea of personhood is patriarchal insofar as it elevates the status of men and marginalises women in society. The second criticism observes that the idea of personhood is characterised by speciesism. The essence of these concerns is that personhood fails to embody a robust moral-political view. African Personhood and Applied Ethics offers a philosophical explication of the ethics of personhood to give reasons why we should take it seriously as an African moral perspective that can contribute to global moral-political issues. The book points to the two facets that constitute the ethics of personhood – an account of (1) moral perfection and (2) dignity. It then draws on the under-explored view of dignity qua the capacity for sympathy inherent in the moral idea of personhood to offer a unified account of selected themes in applied ethics, specifically women, animal and development.

Book An African Philosophy of Personhood Morality and Politics

Download or read book An African Philosophy of Personhood Morality and Politics written by Motsamai Molefe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the salient ethical idea of personhood in African philosophy. It is a philosophical exposition that pursues the ethical and political consequences of the normative idea of personhood as a robust or even foundational ethical category. Personhood refers to the moral achievements of the moral agent usually captured in terms of a virtuous character, which have consequences for both morality and politics. The aim is not to argue for the plausibility of the ethical and political consequences of the idea of personhood. Rather, the book showcases some of the moral-political content and consequences of the account it presents.

Book The Merely Amiable Moral Man No Christian

Download or read book The Merely Amiable Moral Man No Christian written by Abijah Wines and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merely Amiable, Moral Man, No Christian: A Discourse There has long been a warm dispute whether man in his fsl len state is wholly destitute of true religion. Some have advo cated the aflirmative, and many the negative of the question. The greatest objection, which hasi ever been urged gainst the doctrine of the entire moral depravity of man, before he under goes a spiritual renovation, has been taken from certain agrees ble principles, still remaining in human nature, such as sympathy, pity, parental and filial affections. Correct knowledge then of these principles is of high importance, as it has an immediate bearing upon our religious character, and the conditions of our salvation. The passage which has been read, naturally introdu; ces this subject for examination. The person to whom the text refers was a young man and a ruler, probably a member of the Jewish Sanhedrim, the highest court then of their nation. He was strictly moral, and in outward deportment obedient to the laws of God as it appears from his own testimony and from the Saviour's treatment of him. When a few of the precepts of the moral law as a specimen of the whole were named, the young ru ler replied, all these have I kept from my youth up; what luck I yet Had he lived in open violation of the divine law, it can hardly be supposed he would have dared to make this broad as sertion of perfect innocence before our Lord. Besides had he been immoral, and guilty of such falsehood in avowing his purity, our Saviour would have reproved him for Christ perfectly knew the characters of all men; and when the guilty attempted to cover their iniquities and deceive him, he always detectedthelr hypocricy, and administered faithful reproof. But on this occasion he did not even intimate that the young ruler was immoral or deceitful; and his profound silence on this head fair ly implies a virtual admittance of his innocence in external de portment. And not only was he moral, but he was amiable and serious. He came running, and kneeling before our Lord, of fectionately addressing him good master, what shall I do that l'mav inherit eternal life Should we now behold an amiable moral youth, with such seriousness and solicitude for his future wefllheitrg, presenting himself in this humble attitude before a re ligious teacher, asking this most interesting of all questions, what must be done to obtain future eternal happiness, how should we view him 3 Should we net look upon him and love him. We are informed that the Saviour of the world did look upon him and love him. Certainly he possessed lovely qualities of he never would have attracted the aflection of Him who was actuated by a perfectly enlightened and correct taste. Book Conceptions of personhood Can the idea of individual responsibility remain morally relevant

Download or read book Conceptions of personhood Can the idea of individual responsibility remain morally relevant written by David Schneider and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Political Theory and the History of Ideas Journal, grade: High Merit, London School of Economics (Department of Government), course: Modern African Political Philosophy, language: English, abstract: A central element of African thought is the conception of communal personhood. In this essay, we will examine three such communal conceptions of personhood in light of their interrelation with individual responsibility. First, we will have a closer look on Menkiti’s communal conception of personhood and will argue that his account alone is not able to justify individual moral responsibility, but that it is compatible with Gyekye’s communal conception of personhood that underlines certain mental features that hold communal agents individually responsible for their actions. After having discussed and responded to the problem regarding the extent to which a person’s reasoning and her moral sense is shaped by the communal culture she was socialized in, we will have a look on the third communal conception of personhood that arises in a Yoruba allegory and will discuss its implications for individual responsibility. At first, we extract the preferred Yoruba communal conception of personhood out of the allegory. Then, we apply our finding of ‘self-determined but communal’ action on three possible options of receiving one’s destiny in heaven and clarify for each the realm of individual responsibility.

Book Normative Justification of a Global Ethic

Download or read book Normative Justification of a Global Ethic written by Uchenna B. Okeja and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-12-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the normativity of global ethic. Over the years, different cultures and civilizations have been brought closer than never before by globalization. This trend has both its negative and positive dimensions. Overall, the main problem of this present trend of societal organization and human interaction called globalization is a moral issue, namely, the question: how should we treat one another? Okeja's global ethic seeks to answer this question. It underscores that we should treat one another in our current age of globalization in accordance with the Golden Rule principle. The suggestion of this ethic is therefore that we should not treat others the way we would not want to be treated. This sounds simple enough. The problem, however, is that it is not exactly clear what this principle of moral conduct would suggest in both simple and complex moral situations. Most importantly, it is not clear why it is reasonable to treat people the way we would not want to be treated. Why, in other words, should we act in accordance with the Golden Rule principle? What is the justification of the demand the Golden Rule makes on us? This book answers these and other questions about the normative plausibility of the Golden Rule, and thus global ethic, from the comparative perspective of ethics in African philosophy. It analyzes three stages of the possible normative justification of the moral imperative of global ethic and proposes a deliberative form of justification.

Download or read book Ubuntu Ethics written by Motsamai Molefe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a philosophical exposition of Ubuntu ethics, which it does by explaining the saying ‘a person is a person through other persons’. Written by one of the world’s leading scholars of African philosophy, the book first argues that the focus on umuntu (or, a person) in Ubuntu ethics as intrinsically valuable makes ethical humanism and human dignity vitally important. The book then goes on to consider the role of virtue ethics in driving an ideal of moral perfectionism. This, in turn, provides the basis for what a good society should be: a needs-based political theory. Providing an important guide through Ubuntu ethics as a moral system constructed in terms of moral perfectionism, it will be an important read for researchers of African philosophy, and of the philosophy of virtue ethics and moral perfectionism more generally.
