Book Mendelssohn Co A Fictive Memoir

Download or read book Mendelssohn Co A Fictive Memoir written by Rosemarie Bodenheimer and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early nineteenth-century German composers and pianists Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny Hensel are familiar to many people, but few are aware of their younger siblings, Rebecka and Paul. Mendelssohn & Co. is an imagined portrait of this gifted Berlin family, whose lives were shaped by crucial developments in German culture and politics. It is told in the first person, through the eyes and memories of the youngest child, Paul, a gifted amateur cellist and a Berlin banker in the family firm of Mendelssohn & Co. Though Paul's youth is overshadowed by the early fame of the musical prodigies, he outlives his three siblings and becomes a quiet mainstay of his extended family. After the premature deaths of Fanny and Felix in 1847, Paul struggles to protect their legacies and to guide their orphaned sons. His story is closely based on the historical record, but the scenes and dialogues Paul reconstructs are fictional, as are many of his private thoughts and meditations. His personal concerns include the ambiguities of their status as privileged Jewish children baptized into the Lutheran faith, the rapid growth of German and Russian railway lines financed by Mendelssohn & Co., and the shift from classical to Romantic styles in music.

Book Ecstasy and Terror

Download or read book Ecstasy and Terror written by Daniel Mendelsohn and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The role of the critic,” Daniel Mendelsohn writes, “is to mediate intelligently and stylishly between a work and its audience; to educate and edify in an engaging and, preferably, entertaining way.” His latest collection exemplifies the range, depth, and erudition that have made him “required reading for anyone interested in dissecting culture” (The Daily Beast). In Ecstasy and Terror, Mendelsohn once again casts an eye at literature, film, television, and the personal essay, filtering his insights through his training as a scholar of classical antiquity in illuminating and sometimes surprising ways. Many of these essays look with fresh eyes at our culture’s Greek and Roman models: some find an arresting modernity in canonical works (Bacchae, the Aeneid), while others detect a “Greek DNA” in our responses to national traumas such as the Boston Marathon bombings and the assassination of JFK. There are pieces on contemporary literature, from the “aesthetics of victimhood” in Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life to the uncomfortable mixture of art and autobiography in novels by Henry Roth, Ingmar Bergman, and Karl Ove Knausgård. Mendelsohn considers pop culture, too, in essays on the feminism of Game of Thrones and on recent films about artificial intelligence—a subject, he reminds us, that was already of interest to Homer. This collection also brings together for the first time a number of the award-winning memoirist’s personal essays, including his “critic’s manifesto” and a touching reminiscence of his boyhood correspondence with the historical novelist Mary Renault, who inspired him to study the Classics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Schlesinger, aspiring SS officer, has received orders to remove from the roof of Prague's concert hall the statue of the Jewish composer Felix Mendelssohn. But which of the figures adorning the roof is the Jew? Remembering his course on racial science, Schlesinger instructs his men to pull down the statue with the biggest nose. Only as the statue they have carefully chosen begins to topple does he recognize that it is not Mendelssohn; it is Richard Wagner. Thus begins a story of disarming simplicity that traces the transformation of ordinary lives in Nazi-occupied Prague. Death abetted by the petty malevolence of Nazi functionaries wins all the battles but ultimately loses the war, defeated by the fragile flowering of courage and defiance.

Book The Elusive Embrace

Download or read book The Elusive Embrace written by Daniel Mendelsohn and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed for its searing emotional insights, and for the astonishing originality with which it weaves together personal history, cultural essay, and readings of classical texts by Sophocles, Ovid, Euripides, and Sappho, The Elusive Embrace is a profound exploration of the mysteries of identity. It is also a meditation in which the author uses his own divided life to investigate the "rich conflictedness of things," the double lives all of us lead. Daniel Mendelsohn recalls the deceptively quiet suburb where he grew up, torn between his mathematician father's pursuit of scientific truth and the exquisite lies spun by his Orthodox Jewish grandfather; the streets of manhattan's newest "gay ghetto," where "desire for love" competes with "love of desire;" and the quiet moonlit house where a close friend's small son teaches him the meaning of fatherhood. And, finally, in a neglected Jewish cemetery, the author uncovers a family secret that reveals the universal need for storytelling, for inventing myths of the self. The book that Hilton Als calls "equal to Whitman's 'Song of Myself,'" The Elusive Embrace marks a dazzling literary debut.

Book Gigantic The Story Of Frank Black And The Pixies

Download or read book Gigantic The Story Of Frank Black And The Pixies written by John Mendelssohn and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence and importance of The Pixies cannot be overestimated. Their style of broken, furious yet melodic and exceptionally catchy punk rock blazed a trail for such vital bands as Mudhoney and Nirvana, the grunge movement and the 90s British indie-rock sound. Bossanova and Surfer Rosa have become familiar members of the canon of great rock albums, although the group's initial career was cut short by the dismissive actions of singer-songwriter Black Francis/Frank Black. John Mendelssohn's biography details the turbulent career of The Pixies and Frank Black, including personal struggles with other band members and Black's unusual and uncompromising solo work. Culminating with the group's 2004 reformation, this is the definitive story of The Pixies.

Book Three Rings

Download or read book Three Rings written by Daniel Mendelsohn and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir, biography, work of history, and literary criticism all in one, this moving book tells the story of three exiled writers—Erich Auerbach, François Fénelon, and W. G. Sebald—and their relationship with the classics, from Homer to Mimesis. In a genre-defying book hailed as “exquisite” (The New York Times) and “spectacular” (The Times Literary Supplement), the best-selling memoirist and critic Daniel Mendelsohn explores the mysterious links between the randomness of the lives we lead and the artfulness of the stories we tell. Combining memoir, biography, history, and literary criticism, Three Rings weaves together the stories of three exiled writers who turned to the classics of the past to create masterpieces of their own—works that pondered the nature of narrative itself: Erich Auerbach, the Jewish philologist who fled Hitler’s Germany and wrote his classic study of Western literature, Mimesis, in Istanbul; François Fénelon, the seventeenth-century French archbishop whose ingenious sequel to the Odyssey, The Adventures of Telemachus—a veiled critique of the Sun King and the best-selling book in Europe for a hundred years—resulted in his banishment; and the German novelist W.G. Sebald, self-exiled to England, whose distinctively meandering narratives explore Odyssean themes of displacement, nostalgia, and separation from home. Intertwined with these tales of exile and artistic crisis is an account of Mendelsohn’s struggle to write two of his own books—a family saga of the Holocaust and a memoir about reading the Odyssey with his elderly father—that are haunted by tales of oppression and wandering. As Three Rings moves to its startling conclusion, a climactic revelation about the way in which the lives of its three heroes were linked across borders, languages, and centuries forces the reader to reconsider the relationship between narrative and history, art and life.

Download or read book Morningside Heights written by Cheryl Mendelson and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2005-07-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the tremendous success of her first book, a nonfiction work on housekeeping that became a surprise bestseller, Cheryl Mendelson brings to her debut novel the same intensely readable style that made Home Comforts so popular. In the spirit of Anthony Trollope, she roots her story very much in a specific time and place—1999, in an old-fashioned New York City neighborhood that’s becoming rapidly gentrified—and the enormously engaging result resembles a twentieth-century version of The Way We Live Now. Anne and Charles Braithwaite have spent their entire married life in a sedate old apartment building in Morningside Heights, a northern Manhattan neighborhood filled with intellectual, artistic souls like themselves, who thrive on the area’s abundant parks, cultural offferings, and reasonably priced real estate. The Braithwaites, musicians with several young children, are at the core of a circle of friends who make their living as writers, psychiatrists, and professors. But as the novel opens, their comfortable life is being threatened as a buoyant economy sends newly rich Wall Street types scurrying northward in search of good investments and more space. At the same time, the Braithwaites weather the difficult love lives of their friends, and all of the characters confront their fears that the institutions and social values that have until now provided them with meaning and stability—science, religion, the arts—are in increasing decline. Though the group clings to the rituals and promises of such institutions, the Braithwaites’ imminent departure sends shock waves through their community. As the family contemplates the impossible—a move to the suburbs—their predicament represents the end of a cultured kind of city life that middle-class families can no longer afford. This intelligent and captivating social chronicle is the first of a trilogy of novels about Morningside Heights; readers sure to be drawn in by Mendelson’s habit-forming prose have much more to look forward to.
