Book Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand

Download or read book Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand written by Joseph Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand "Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand" should be an appropriate title for a work containing the photos and biographical sketches of representative men, most of whom are deeply interested in racing, hunting, and other sports. To make this book representative, it was necessary to take the leading actors in all departments, but it is not pretended that the list has been exhausted, the field is so large. Connecting links will be found between the old racing world and the new in its pages. There are many who have helped, or are assisting, to make turf history, whom the Editor would have been pleased to add to the collection, but a few, from excessive modesty, declined; others were negligent, and had to be left out, and a few have been omitted unintentionally. To have included all would have been a much heavier undertaking than a busy man could accomplish. The book has, however, run into greater dimensions than was promised at the outset, and contains about 250 illustrations. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting many of the photos, and information. The Editor desires to express his sincere thanks to those who so cordially responded, and others who have promised support, and trusts that any shortcomings may be overlooked. He would add, in conclusion, that he has received every consideration from his publishers, the Brett Printing and Publishing Company, who have done the whole of the mechanical work in connection with the illustrations and the issue of the book. Book Sports Law in New Zealand

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Toomey
  • Publisher : Kluwer Law International B.V.
  • Release : 2023-05-20
  • ISBN : 9403505575
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Sports Law in New Zealand written by Elizabeth Toomey and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-05-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in New Zealand deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in New Zealand will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.

Book Sport Media and Mega Events

Download or read book Sport Media and Mega Events written by Lawrence A. Wenner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together many of the most influential scholars in sport and media studies, this book examines the diverse ways that media influences our understanding of the world’s most important sport events, dubbed sports mega-events. It sheds new light on how these events have been changed by the media, and have, in turn, adapted to media to further their brand’s cultural influence. Focusing on the central concept of "mediatization" – the permeation of media into all spheres of contemporary life – the book presents original case studies of major events including the Olympics, FIFA, rugby and cricket World Cups, Tour de France, Super Bowl, World Series, Monaco Grand Prix, Wimbledon, and many more. Written from a truly international perspective, this is a seminal work in sport and media studies that reveals the growing political, economic, and cultural influences of sport mega-events in contemporary society. Sport, Media and Mega-Events is an essential text for any course on the sociology of sport, event management, sport marketing, or featuring a cultural, communication or media studies approach to sport.

Book Historical Dictionary of New Zealand

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of New Zealand written by Janine Hayward and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse elements have created New Zealand’s distinctive political and social culture. First is New Zealand’s journey as a colony, and the various impacts this had on settler and Maori society. The second theme is the quest for what one prominent historian has labelled ‘national obsessions’ – equality and security, both individual and collective. The third, and more recent, theme is New Zealand’s emergence as a nation with a unique identity. New Zealand’s small geographic size and relative isolation from other societies, the dominant influence of British culture, the resurgence of Maori language and culture, the endemic instability of an economy based on a narrow range of pastoral products, and the dominance of the state in the lives of its people, all help to explain much of the present-day New Zealand psyche. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of New Zealand contains a chronology, an introduction, appendix, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about New Zealand.

Book Rugby League in New Zealand

Download or read book Rugby League in New Zealand written by Ryan Bodman and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a sport told through its communities. Rugby League in New Zealand: A People’s History unveils the compelling journey of a game flourishing against the odds. Beginning with the game’s introduction to the country in 1907, Ryan Bodman reveals the deep-rooted connections between rugby league’s development and the evolving cultural fabric of New Zealand. By questioning the mythic status of rugby union in the nation’s identity, this history highlights how power, politics and people have collectively shaped the country’s sporting scene. Drawing on first-hand interviews and a wide range of illustrations and archival material, Bodman locates rugby league history in working-class suburbs, and among Kiingitanga Māori, Pasifika migrants, and clubs and communities across the country. The people behind the game share accounts of change, triumph and resilience, while emphasising rugby league’s lasting influence on New Zealanders’ lives.
