Book excerpt: Men Cry Too I cannot remember the first time I saw a man crying, but I do know I was an adult when it happened. From my experience, in the African American community, men are taught that it is unacceptable and inappropriate for them to cry openly. It is perceived as a sign of weakness. They are told to, "suck it up," and "hold the tears inside." But, is that a reasonable request? No, it is not. Men have feelings and emotions-just like women. It is discriminating, unnatural and unreasonable to request that a man suppress his emotions. Does that make them less than a man? Of course not-it makes them human. Real men will admit that they cry. It is my hope that men who are taught that crying makes them less than a man read these testimonies and realize that those who contributed to this book are definitely REAL MEN! To the men who wrote their stories for this book, I thank you, salute you and applaud you for your testimonies and your honesty.

Book Cry Like a Man

Download or read book Cry Like a Man written by Jason Wilson and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Book excerpt: Boys Don't Cry is a book that will make sense of depression and anxiety for people who might not recognise those feelings in themselves or others. Suicide is the single biggest killer of men aged 20-45 in the UK. Depression and undiagnosed mental illness are huge contributors to these deaths as they're often more difficult to diagnose in men. And those men don't tend to talk about the typical symptoms or visit their doctor. Meet Tim. For nearly a decade he kept his depression secret. It made him feel so weak and shameful he thought it would destroy his whole life if anyone found out. And Tim is not alone. After finally opening up he realised that mental illness was affecting many men around the globe - and he knew that wasn't ok. A brutally honest, wickedly warming and heart-breaking tale about what it really takes to be a 'real man', written by one who decided that he wanted to change the world by no longer being silent. Book Men Cry Too

Download or read book Men Cry Too written by Wayne Misner and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depressed, with his emotions holding onto a tornado, Misner wrote about love, divorce, and heartache. The poems and prose were written as he was trying to handle what life had dealt him. Written from his heart, he feels it would be valuable to share his experience with others. The poems help make sense of how people hold onto the thrills and memories of love, as they lose their loved ones. Love is possible another day. Scars will heal; hurt will dissipate, but love stays forever in the fibers of your body, the pages of your memory, and the senses of your being. Misner said, "When I started to write, I had no subject in mind. I had all these different emotions running though me at the same time; most of them bouncing off each other. I found if I wrote down what I was thinking, in time I felt better. I don't know why writing about pain and heartache helps you grow, but you can learn from pain. As I wrote, I got stronger and saw where mistakes were made. Maybe the next time there will be no mistakes." Read his writings and you may avoid riding the tornado

Book Man Enough

Download or read book Man Enough written by Justin Baldoni and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A GRIPPING, FEARLESS EXPLORATION OF MASCULINITY The effects of traditionally defined masculinity have become one of the most prevalent social issues of our time. In this engaging and provocative new book, beloved actor, director, and social activist Justin Baldoni reflects on his own struggles with masculinity. With insight and honesty, he explores a range of difficult, sometimes uncomfortable topics including strength and vulnerability, relationships and marriage, body image, sex and sexuality, racial justice, gender equality, and fatherhood. Writing from experience, Justin invites us to move beyond the scripts we’ve learned since childhood and the roles we are expected to play. He challenges men to be brave enough to be vulnerable, to be strong enough to be sensitive, to be confident enough to listen. Encouraging men to dig deep within themselves, Justin helps us reimagine what it means to be man enough and in the process what it means to be human.

Download or read book Boys Don t Cry written by Milette Shamir and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-10 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We take for granted the idea that white, middle-class, straight masculinity connotes total control of emotions, emotional inexpressivity, and emotional isolation. That men repress their feelings as they seek their fortunes in the competitive worlds of business and politics seems to be a given. This collection of essays by prominent literary and cultural critics rethinks such commonly held views by addressing the history and politics of emotion in prevailing narratives about masculinity. How did the story of the emotionally stifled U.S. male come into being? What are its political stakes? Will the "release" of straight, white, middle-class masculine emotion remake existing forms of power or reinforce them? This collection forcefully challenges our most entrenched ideas about male emotion. Through readings of works by Thoreau, Lowell, and W. E. B. Du Bois, and of twentieth century authors such as Hemingway and Kerouac, this book questions the persistence of the emotionally alienated male in narratives of white middle-class masculinity and addresses the political and social implications of male emotional release.

"Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. Book For the Love of Men

Download or read book For the Love of Men written by Liz Plank and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonfiction investigation into masculinity, For The Love of Men provides actionable steps for how to be a man in the modern world, while also exploring how being a man in the world has evolved. In 2019, traditional masculinity is both rewarded and sanctioned. Men grow up being told that boys don’t cry and dolls are for girls (a newer phenomenon than you might realize—gendered toys came back in vogue as recently as the 80s). They learn they must hide their feelings and anxieties, that their masculinity must constantly be proven. They must be the breadwinners, they must be the romantic pursuers. This hasn’t been good for the culture at large: 99% of school shooters are male; men in fraternities are 300% (!) more likely to commit rape; a woman serving in uniform has a higher likelihood of being assaulted by a fellow soldier than to be killed by enemy fire. In For the Love of Men, Liz offers a smart, insightful, and deeply-researched guide for what we're all going to do about toxic masculinity. For both women looking to guide the men in their lives and men who want to do better and just don’t know how, For the Love of Men will lead the conversation on men's issues in a society where so much is changing, but gender roles have remained strangely stagnant. What are we going to do about men? Liz Plank has the answer. And it has the possibility to change the world for men and women alike.

Book The History of the Siege of Lisbon

Download or read book The History of the Siege of Lisbon written by José Saramago and published by HMH. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proofreader realizes his power to edit the truth on a whim, in a “brilliantly original” novel by a Nobel Prize winner (Los Angeles Times Book Review). Raimundo Silva is a middle-aged, celibate clerk, proofing manuscripts for a respectable publishing house. Fluent in Portuguese, he has been assigned to work on a standard history of the country, and the twelfth-century king who laid siege to Lisbon. In a moment of subversive daring, Raimundo decides to change just one single word of text—a capricious revision that completely undoes the past. When discovered, his insolent disregard for facts appalls his employers—save for his new editor, Maria Sara. She suggests that Rainmundo take his transgressions even further. Through Rainmundo and Maria’s eyes, what transpires is an alternate view of history and a colorful reinvention of a debatable truth. It’s a serpentine journey through time where past and present converge, fact becomes myth, and fiction and reality blur—especially for Rainmundo and Maria themselves, who begin to find themselves erotically drawn to each other. “Walter Mitty has nothing on Raimundo Silva . . . this hypnotic tale is a great comic romp through history, language and the imagination.” —Publishers Weekly Translated by Giovanni Pontiero

Download or read book Boys Do Cry written by Michelle Catanach and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health problems (e.g. depression, anxiety and drug use) are one of the main causes of the overall disease burden in the world. In the UK, 84 men commit suicide every week, rising to 123 per day in the US. In Australia, men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women, and it is estimated that there are approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year. As much as women have been disfigured by the patriarchy, men have too. From birth boys are given a very disempowering view of what it means to be a real man, told to 'man up', that 'boys don't cry', their tenderness and empathy shamed out of them and replaced with a tough, armoured exterior. They learn that women are objects, machismo and misogyny becoming a badge of honour in a world that otherwise leaves them feeling lost, disconnected and unsure of who they're meant to be. They learn to fight for survival, that success and power are everything, and without them, they're nothing. As a result, men have suffered, suppressing their emotions and only learning unhealthy expressions of anger, often manifesting as anxiety, depression, addiction and violence towards other men, women and - ultimately - themselves. In Boys Do Cry, 12 men bare their souls, expose their wounds, and share their breakdown-breakthrough moments to change the narrative around masculinity and inspire men of all ages to step into the man they deeply desire to be. Clear your mind, open your heart, and get ready to go on a journey of truth and vulnerability as we redefine what it means to be a man.Chapters: Removing the Masks By Spencer JacobsFrom Addiction to Recovery By Shaun CoffeyFacing My Demons By Andy BowkerBoys Do Cry By Brad KennyFinding My Way Home By Richie NelsonUnmasking the Masculine By Tim VaughanScreaming on the Inside By Tom JordanThe Mask By Mark NeweyFeelings About Feelings By Curtis HarrenBeing Vulnerable Is Your Superpower By Scott Brandon HoffmanThe Bumpy Road to Success By Reece FormosaTaking the Leap By Eugene StuchinskyAll royalties are being shared equally between Positive Signs, and Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM - registered charity No. 1110621 and SCO44347.)
