Book Improving Working Memory in Learning and Intellectual Disabilities

Download or read book Improving Working Memory in Learning and Intellectual Disabilities written by Silvia Lanfranchi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last forty years of research have demonstrated that working memory (WM) is a key concept for understanding higher-order cognition. To give an example, WM is involved in reading comprehension, problem solving and reasoning, but also in a number of everyday life activities. It has a clear role in the case of atypical development too. For instance, numerous studies have shown an impairment in WM in individuals with learning disabilities (LD) or intellectual disabilities (ID); and several researchers have hypothesized that this can be linked to their difficulties in learning, cognition and everyday life. The latest challenge in the field concerns the trainability of WM. If it is a construct central to our understanding of cognition in typical and atypical development, then specific intervention to sustain WM performance might also promote changes in cognitive processes associated with WM. The idea that WM can be modified is debated, however, partly because of the theoretical implications of this view, and partly due to the generally contradictory results obtained so far. In fact, most studies converge in demonstrating specific effects of WM training, i.e. improvements in the trained tasks, but few transfer effects to allied cognitive processes are generally reported. It is worth noting that any maintenance effects (when investigated) are even more meagre. In addition, a number of methodological concerns have been raised in relation to the use of: 1. single tasks to assess the effects of a training program; 2. WM tasks differing from those used in the training to assess the effects of WM training; and 3. passive control groups. These and other crucial issues have so far prevented any conclusions from being drawn on the efficacy of WM training. Bearing in mind that the opportunity to train WM could have a huge impact in the educational and clinical settings, it seems fundamentally important to shed more light on the limits and potential of this line of research. The aim of the research discussed here is to generate new evidence on the feasibility of training WM in individuals with LD and ID. There are several questions that could be raised in this field. For a start, can WM be trained in this population? Are there some aspects of WM that can be trained more easily than others? Can a WM training reduce the impact of LD and ID on learning outcomes, and on everyday living? What kind of training program is best suited to the promotion of such changes?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain ... There is no other part of the human anatomy that is so intriguing. How does it develop and function and why does it sometimes, tragically, degenerate? The answers are complex. In Discovering the Brain, science writer Sandra Ackerman cuts through the complexity to bring this vital topic to the public. The 1990s were declared the "Decade of the Brain" by former President Bush, and the neuroscience community responded with a host of new investigations and conferences. Discovering the Brain is based on the Institute of Medicine conference, Decade of the Brain: Frontiers in Neuroscience and Brain Research. Discovering the Brain is a "field guide" to the brainâ€"an easy-to-read discussion of the brain's physical structure and where functions such as language and music appreciation lie. Ackerman examines: How electrical and chemical signals are conveyed in the brain. The mechanisms by which we see, hear, think, and pay attentionâ€"and how a "gut feeling" actually originates in the brain. Learning and memory retention, including parallels to computer memory and what they might tell us about our own mental capacity. Development of the brain throughout the life span, with a look at the aging brain. Ackerman provides an enlightening chapter on the connection between the brain's physical condition and various mental disorders and notes what progress can realistically be made toward the prevention and treatment of stroke and other ailments. Finally, she explores the potential for major advances during the "Decade of the Brain," with a look at medical imaging techniquesâ€"what various technologies can and cannot tell usâ€"and how the public and private sectors can contribute to continued advances in neuroscience. This highly readable volume will provide the public and policymakersâ€"and many scientists as wellâ€"with a helpful guide to understanding the many discoveries that are sure to be announced throughout the "Decade of the Brain."

Book Memory Improvement Guidebook

Download or read book Memory Improvement Guidebook written by Emerson Hooper and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to Dramatically Improve Memory and Unlock the Potential of Your Mind, then keep reading.. Memory is perhaps one of the most dynamic of human abilities that sets us apart from most other animals on the planet. Yet memory and our thinking is not something that is the same for all people, nor does it stay the same throughout our lives. As a young student, for example, we wish for a better, faster and more effective memorization of facts and being able to recall those in response to exams; while in later life, we fear the loss of memory through memory disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Our memories form such an integral part of who we are that if we were to lose our memories, we would lose a part of ourselves. Science has proven that our lifestyle choices have a huge impact on how long and how well we can remember. What has been discovered through consistent testing is that our brains improve the more we use them. Like an athlete who trains their muscles to compete, we can also train our brains to develop new potential. We've all seen people who are just so incredibly smart that we are left gobsmacked when we hear about the things they say, and the problems they solve. These individuals are not necessarily gifted with more brain-juice than us mere mortals. The key difference is the way in which these people use and train their brains. In this guide, you will discover exciting and actionable strategies to improve your memory, and bring to you a clarity of thought that would make Einstein proud. You'll discover: How to Create Neurogenesis and Neuroplasticity to Develop Memory 5 Technologies That Enhance Memory How to Train Your Brain by Feeding Your Gut 13 Nootropic Supplements that Increase your Brain's Performance Why Your Current Lifestyle May Be a Memory Killer What Science Says About Lifestyle and Memory How to Improve Your Lifestyle to Get Smarter 5 Science-Based Strategies That Will Dramatically Improve your Memory and Intelligence Here are some questions you may have about this book: 1. This book was released on 1850 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is the third and last of the series on the application of Phrenology to "Education and Self Improvement." Volume III shows how to educate the intellect. It analyzes each of the intellectual faculties, and points out the means of augmenting their efficiency. It of course shows how to cultivate the memory; conduct the intellectual education of the young; and strengthen and expand the intellect. It especially embodies copious directions for educating our own selves. Personal effort is indispensable to intellectual attainments and greatness. All must be self-made or not made at all. Original capabilities are indeed conferred by nature, yet however great, produce very little unless assiduously cultivated. Nature confers on us all several fold more talent than we develop by culture{97}bestows a vast amount of mentality which lies dormant for want of a true system of education{97}one founded in the nature of mind. That system Phrenology develops, by showing the precise function of every faculty, and thereby just what, brought before it, will stimulate it to action, and thus augment its power and efficiency"--Preface. Book 30 great ideas to improve memory and intelligence

Download or read book 30 great ideas to improve memory and intelligence written by Andrea Torre and published by Andrea. This book was released on with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IS IT POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE MEMORY AND INTELLIGENCE? According to various scientific researches and the opinion of distinguished researchers, YES! Intelligence has a strong genetic component that today we know to be 50 - 60% and widespread on many genes. The remainder of an individual's non-genetic intelligence is given by the environment, experiences and relationships with other individuals. The brain is a plastic and ever-changing organ. It feeds on experiences: playing an instrument, learning a new language, mastering memory and rapid learning techniques, speed reading, using an effective study method or interacting with other people are all activities that can induce morpho-functional variations, both in the adult and in the child (here more markedly). If properly stimulated, nerve cells can form synapses between them, affecting the performance of the brain. This book was created with the intention of providing to the reader a series of activities, information and suggestions to be implemented to refine their mental faculties. A pocket guide that traces a path of personal growth aimed at achieving one's goals in the study, work or in everyday life. There are no magic formulas or immediate results. The effects will be evident and tangible only with commitment, perseverance and willpower. If you found this book useful or interesting let me know by voting and leaving a comment. START TODAY!
