Book Memories of Youth and Manhood Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of Youth and Manhood Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Sidney Willard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Youth and Manhood, Vol. 2 Our Class Day, June 21. - Leave-taking of the Faculty and of each other. - Strength and Permanency of Class Feeling. - Commencement Day. - Public Exercises. - Dining Hall. - Reflections on our Separation. On the 21st of June, 1798, the day of the dismission of the Senior Class from all academic exercises, the class met in the College chapel to attend the accustomed ceremonies of the occasion, and afterwards to enjoy the usual festivities of the day, since called, for the sake of a name, and for brevity's sake, Class Day. There had been a want of perfect harmony in the previous proceedings, which in some degree marred the social enjoyments of the day; but with the day all dissension closed, awaiting the dawn of another day, the harbinger of the brighter recollections of four years spent in pleasant and peaceful intercourse. There lingered no lasting alienations of feeling. Whatever were the occasions of the discontent, it soon expired, was buried in the dark recesses of discarded memories, and there lay lost and forgotten. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Youth and Manhood of Cyril Thornton, Vol. 2 of 3 To a young man in my situation, it is per haps a misfortune, that in London there is scarcely any length to which dissipation may not be carried without loss of character. An individual forms so small a fraction Of the mighty mass, and his proceedings are so much a matter Of indifference to those around him, that the check of public opinion, which in smaller socie ties exerts so salutary an influence, is entirely removed. There is no privacy like that one enjoys in the crowd of a million, and it has been truly said by. Dr Johnson, that he who would live perfectly secluded from his fellow men, should make London the theatre Of his solitude. Engrossed by pleasure, I was insensible Of the rapidity with which time flew by. The weeks allowed for preparation were gone, when I imagined them to be scarcely commenced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reginald Dalton Reginald dalton had always a singular pleasure in re calling those images of perfect repose with which he was surrounded, at the remotest period to which his remem brance could go back, - the little sequestered parsonage house, embosomed among elms and sycamores - the old fashioned garden, with its broad turf walks - the long happy days spent in bright sunshine by the side Of the shining lake - the unwearied kindnesses of the mildest of parents. There are few Of us whose Oldest impressions are not, as his were, serene and delightful and I, for one, cannot, I must confess, divest myself of a sort of half pleasing, half melancholy anticipation, that should age ever draw a defacing hand over the strongest lines imprinted by the stirring events of youth and manhood, the harmless trea sures of infant memory - the trivial fond records - may be spared amidst the havoc. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Digby Grand, Vol. 2 of 2: An Autobiography But much as all these eloquent gentlemen love to dwell upon their favourite topics, they are not to be compared with two old University chums, meeting after an interval of a few years, and living over again in memory the wild jollities and rapid escapades of manhood's morning tim& At it they go - pell-mell - both together, without a moment's interval or ces sation: how Brazenose bumped Oriel, and what the dean said concerning the desecration of Peckwater what a 'good-plucked one' was Muffies of Trinity, and how he licked the bargeman, and rode over Tom Sebright - why Sapling should have been senior-wrangler, and how Muggins took a 'double first' - and what fun we had after 'hall' in 'my rooms, ' and amongst 'our own set of men.' All these recollections appear to revive with a freshness that Time is altogether unable to tarnish, and the admiring auditor who has not enjoyed the advantages of a University education, begins to think that his own youth has been most ingloriously wasted. Book Methods for the Study of Literature as Cultural Memory

Download or read book Methods for the Study of Literature as Cultural Memory written by International Comparative Literature Association. Congress and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume collaborators from different universities all over the world explore a wide variety of methods for the study of literature as cultural memory. In literature, the past may be (re)constructed in various ways and in very diverse forms. This immediately raises the question as to how one can describe and inventory the various discourses and metadiscourses of historical representation. In what sense can the rhetoric of literary historiography itself contribute to literature's function as cultural memory? Which methods of analysis are most appropriate for describing specific text types or genres as cultural memory? What have been the pragmatic uses and the ethical merits of the stability and continuity that literature has often provided for European, American, Asian and African cultures? What are the dilemmas they create for our teaching at the end of the twentieth century? To all these questions, a wide range of scholars here tries to find answers. In thorough and highly original contributions, they not only address theoretical problems, but also engage themselves in practical analyses of specific works.

Book excerpt: Madman, tyrant, animal—history has given Adolf Hitler many names. In Mein Kampf (My Struggle), often called the Nazi bible, Hitler describes his life, frustrations, ideals, and dreams. Born to an impoverished couple in a small town in Austria, the young Adolf grew up with the fervent desire to become a painter. The death of his parents and outright rejection from art schools in Vienna forced him into underpaid work as a laborer. During the First World War, Hitler served in the infantry and was decorated for bravery. After the war, he became actively involved with socialist political groups and quickly rose to power, establishing himself as Chairman of the National Socialist German Worker's party. In 1924, Hitler led a coalition of nationalist groups in a bid to overthrow the Bavarian government in Munich. The infamous Munich "Beer-hall putsch" was unsuccessful, and Hitler was arrested. During the nine months he was in prison, an embittered and frustrated Hitler dictated a personal manifesto to his loyal follower Rudolph Hess. He vented his sentiments against communism and the Jewish people in this document, which was to become Mein Kampf, the controversial book that is seen as the blue-print for Hitler's political and military campaign. In Mein Kampf, Hitler describes his strategy for rebuilding Germany and conquering Europe. It is a glimpse into the mind of a man who destabilized world peace and pursued the genocide now known as the Holocaust.
